Chapter 15 Take Advantage of the Fire to Rob_1

Chapter 15: Taking Advantage of the Crisis

...

"Brother Wang, don't get me wrong. I swear I'm not using you." Old Miller's voice trembled a bit over the phone. Laughing nervously, he pleaded, "Brother, you must help me this time. There's a mess in the company, with too many things involved. There are many things I can't deal with myself, so I asked Faye to handle them. But I've heard some unsettling rumors, it seems some people are planning to drive Faye away through devious means. I felt desperate, so I discussed with my old friend, Harry Owen, and crafted a small plot to relocate Faye to your place. I know that with you around, no harm will come to her. Please, Brother Wang, I'm begging you, you can't just stand by and let the company I worked so hard for go bankrupt, can you?" His voice was filled with desperation.

"Hmph!" Yves King huffed coldly, "Find someone else to deal with this, I've already retired. And about this manipulation, I'll remember it." Despite Old Miller's pitiful plea, King knew this was just one of his tricks—playing the victim card. Oddly enough, after listening to the old man's ramblings, his mood seemed to lighten somewhat.

"Oh, my brother, we've known each other for years, you can't just stand by and do nothing, right? How about this, I'll treat you to a meal later, anything you want." Old Miller began to banter over the phone, joking, "Besides, my niece Faye is a real gem. Why not seize this opportunity and try to win her over? You'll be seriously lucky. Brother Wang, or should I say, King~the magnificent Mr. King, if you refuse to help me this time, I'll make a scene outside your house every day, shouting about how you got my niece pregnant and refuse to take responsibility… just think, all your old neighbors will be there to see it."

Yves King rubbed his forehead, regretting his promise to Old Miller about considering retirement at his company. Who knew he was about to pull such a stunt, even calculating a way to ship her over to his place? However, he and Old Miller had known each other for about six or seven years. Back when he started in the industry, Old Miller had taken good care of him. Most importantly, it was Old Miller who helped handle his mother's funeral. Being young at the time, he knew nothing about such things. Plus, over the years, Old Miller had often sent people to clean and maintain his mother's grave.

Admittedly, he owed Old Miller a lot for his generous help. Shouldn't he lend a hand when Old Miller was in trouble? However, the idea of exploiting him as a babysitter for Faye was rather repugnant.

"My brother~ I have elders to take care of and children to raise. Are you really just going to stand by and do nothing? If anything happens to me, how are they supposed to survive?" Old Miller started to whine on the phone, "Do you remember when we first met at the border..."

"Alright, alright, you've managed to scare me again," King said exasperatedly, "I'll let this one go, but you know how I react to being manipulated."

"Alright, ok!" Old Miller cheered up instantly, "Whatever you say. I give my word as a gentleman, I won't do it again."

"A gentleman, huh!" King scoffed," Also, I will absolutely not be involved in your messy affairs. I will only guarantee the safety of the girl for half a year. Besides, about the money…"

"Oh? Talking about money, brother, doesn't that taint our relationship? Haven't you given up all your illicit activities in retirement? Accepting money just wouldn't be right." Old Miller interrupted, bargaining, "Tell you what, I'll treat you to a night out. On me. You can ask for anything."

"Yes, it's not right to charge a friend for helping out," King laughed. Before Old Miller could express his satisfaction, he added, "But since you have more money than you can handle, and most of it come from questionable sources, why not do some good with it? I have a friend who has a child with kidney disease. Your kind-hearted niece just committed a charitable act by offering to help finance the treatment in America. Old Miller, as a ruthless capitalist, shouldn't you perform a good deed, earn some karma."

"Oh, my mother! I'm no capitalist! I'm just doing business to feed my family!" Miller flinched at King's words and quickly claimed to be broke, "Sending him to America? They'll fleece us! I could pull some strings and arrange treatment in a good hospital here."

"Alright then, I'll give you a discount, for brotherhood's sake, and settle for a commission of three million dollars," Yves King nonchalantly lit a cigarette, chuckled, and said, "But rest assured, after covering the kid's medical expenses, the rest will be donated to the charity foundation run in your name."

"Ah ha, just a little thing. Just kidding between brothers. Don't even mention America, if you want to send that kid to Mars for treatment, I wouldn't hesitate. Everybody knows Old Miller, I uphold loyalty and am the most charitable." Upon hearing the price, Old Miller was nearly brought to tears. Three million dollars! That's so far beyond needing to go to America for a kidney transplant. Even if he had to replace every part of his body, it would be more than enough.

"Got it. Do you think I don't know who you are?" Yves King rudely interrupted his self-praise, "I'm not in a position to get involved in this matter, you handle it under the name of a charitable entrepreneur. Let's leave it at that, goodbye."

Without waiting for any objections from Old Miller, Yves King cut off the call, mildly avenging his displeasure at being taken advantage of.

However, in truth, according to Yves King's temper, if it's something he's genuinely unwilling to do, even if you held a gun to his head, he would absolutely not agree. But one mustn't lose their conscience. If someone helps you, you shouldn't be the first to hide when others encounter problems.

Besides, the young lady named Faye Owen, although due to various reasons, she has a strong sense of superiority, and is domineering in her actions. But overall, she's still a kind-hearted and good person. It's not like he's marrying her, so her behavior, for the most part, has no connection with him. Let's consider it a favor to repay Old Miller's kindness to him. And it seems that President Owen doesn't know anything about it yet.

Yves King lit a cigarette and sauntered off. He waved at Faye Owen, saying, "President Owen, I happen to be lacking money recently. You promised a monthly rent of ten thousand, does that still count?"

Faye Owen was taken aback, but then the corner of her mouth showed a hint of contempt. This guy, he's really an unscrupulous opportunist. Before he received the money, he kept urging her to leave. But as soon as she mentioned a monthly rent of ten thousand, he immediately changed his attitude. Found him to be quite a miser and a mean creature.

Her dislike for Yves King intensified. However, seeing as she was under his roof, she had no choice but to swallow her anger. Was she really supposed to pawn her valuable belongings? Even if she redeemed them later, who knew what condition they'd be in. Each of her possessions was carefully selected, and held a special place in her heart.

And the idea of going on a date with someone called Chapman or Lane was absolutely impossible. She wasn't desperate enough to compromise her principles for money.

"Deal but the payment will be given all at once after half a year. And I'll probably stay in this house for about three months," Faye Owen didn't feel like talking to such a man, let alone haggling. She was confident that she could achieve good results for the company within half a year. At that time, according to the agreement, Uncle Miller would owe her a substantial amount of money.

"Alright, I agree to the lump sum after half a year. But you'll only stay for three months, I can't agree to that. If you want to rent this house, you have to rent it all at once for at least half a year or no deal," Yves King carelessly smoked his cigarette, squinting his eyes in a greedy manner.

Faye Owen was so angry she was about to explode. As a man, a capable man, he was shamelessly exploiting the situation. She couldn't help but feel utter contempt for his character.
