Flames of redemption

"You're such a bastard!" "I am a bastard," he agreed, leaning even closer to her, "but I'm your bastard, kitten." Someone who's not average, not ordinary, not trying to fit in, not....'normal', as defined by society. And deep inside, she felt the weight of eyes upon her, watching her every move. Questions lingered and haunted her mind: Who was the observer? And what motives laid behind those captivating gazes?

Regan left the box on the counter and opened the fridge to eat something. She ignored his voice in her head, although his undecipherable ramble went on for a while. She did some homework. Minutes later, she heard the main door crack and it was her aunt. Regan was relieved because as time passed, she felt scared to be alone in the house at night. The scariest thing was that she wasn't even alone. As she greeted her aunt, the next thing that Monica said, was weird."Tomorrow after school, we're gonna go somewhere.""Where will we go?" Regan asked confused, following her."I'll tell you tomorrow," Monica said while entering her bedroom and closing the door shut.Regan's eyebrows furrowed. She didn't really like surprises. If they were going somewhere to eat, drink or shop, then her aunt would have said. She wasn't left to ask anymore, she had disturbed her aunt already. She put cameras around without her permission. She thought of watching a movie, a random one on TV. But soon she got bored out. She wasn't in mood to watch movies. It seemed boring, stupid and meaningless.Grumpiness washed over her again. Yes, she had always carried that sense of dread, but at least she hadn't been haunted by external forces.Nothing felt interesting to her and even doing practically nothing was bothering her. She couldn't imagine what would happen if she really had gone mentally insane.Regan wished she never moved out of her previous place. She had been bullied but nothing had affected her in any way that haunting thing was.She lay down on the couch and few tears escaped her eyes. She hated crying, she rarely did. But this time, she couldn't help it. She didn't have to be tormented psychologically like this.Soon, she wiped tears and stood up. But it wasn't over. The light of the kitchen flickered on. Regan looked there to see no one. But by now, this was just a facade, she knew someone was there."Hey, if you're hiding, come out," Regan said angrily curling her hands in a fist, "Show yourself!" she raised her voice even more, trying to sound braver than she felt.Regan didn't know what he was, a ghost, a spirit but whatever he was, he was haunting her for apparently no reason."If you really had guts, you'd show yourself straight before me, not as a nightmare."Deep down she wouldn't want to see him again like it happened in school. She wasn't sure either if he was just an imagination or was really there. She waited and nothing happened.Unaware of her, Monica heard her outburst. She was worried and uncertain. There was really something going on with Regan.Monica didn't say anything, neither did she approach Regan. She walked to her own room without making any sound.Meanwhile, Regan observed the cameras. If he was here, the camera must have caught him...."Only if human....only real," she thought. She chose to check the kitchen's footage. She skipped until the time she wanted to check. And she stopped when she saw her own self appearing. She turned the footage two minutes back to see what happened when the light turned on itself. But to her surprise, there was no evidence that the light was turned on. And no one else appeared, instead of Regan, who was yelling to no one in particular."How is that possible," she thought."Everything is possible. Now, I suggest you stop doing this ridiculous thing." He said.Regan cursed under her breath and slammed her laptop shut. Then, she opened it to rechecked again but there was absolutely no moment where the light was turned on. She looked closely to see if there had been any cuts in the footage but she couldn't notice that either. She sighed in frustration and as the footage went on, she saw her aunt hiding behind the wall, listening to her outbursts."Holy crap!" Regan muttered, embarrassment crept through her cheeks and she smacked her forehead. At least she could have lowered her voice.***Regan woke up early from taking a little nap. She slept in the couch like she had been sleeping for the past weeks. Well, she didn't really sleep but at least, tried to. Just to know what happened when she was unconscious. Grabbing her laptop, she turned it on, tapping impatiently. With anticipation, she scanned through the recordings, but to her disappointment, there was nothing suspicious or out of the ordinary."Precise. But not for someone like me." His chuckle echoed in her head.Disheartened, Regan sighed and closed the footage, realizing that she might never find concrete proof of what was haunting her. But deep down, she knew that her experiences were real, and she couldn't ignore his voice and his presence in her house. She'd have to find a way to uncover the truth and put an end to this mysterious torment. She decided to get ready for school and her curiosity was getting the best of her, trying to figure out where she was going after school. She got dressed in her room and did a messy bun to hide the red part of her hair but it still showed. Anyway, she thought that it was a bit better and let it be.When she walked downstairs, something good smelled from the kitchen. Regan walked to the kitchen to see that Monica had cooked omelette.Embarrassment washed over Regan when she remembered that her aunt heard her outburst yesterday. But Regan couldn't go back, Monica already noticed she was here."Good morning," Regan muttered."Good morning. Let's go eat breakfast." Monica said and she picked a tray. She walked to the door that lead to the backyard. Regan wasn't hungry but grabbed her plate whatsoever.Regan saw that her aunt sat on the table and so did she. They started eating and Regan decided to speak."So...why don't you tell me where we're going after school? You said you were going to tell me in the morning. And now it's morning," Regan said with a bit of annoyance."Eat your food. I'll drop you off at school today and I'll pick you up," Monica said ignoring the question."Why? I can drive myself," Regan asked confused. She didn't want to think about what happened yesterday but she thought that her aunt might think that she wasn't mentally well enough to drive a car.Monica knew that Regan could drive but knowing how Regan was acting and behaving, she thought that I'd be dangerous letting her drive."And why don't you want me to drive you? I'm your aunt.""Yeah, you're right, I am sorry." Regan said with a low voice, "I'm going to leave," she added and got up from her chair. She finished the omelette just because Monica would not get over it if she didn't.After 5 minutes, Monica was also ready. They both got in the car and the drive was silent. When Regan was left to school she just said goodbye and continued going. When she walked to the school ground, she saw Vesper chatting with a girl. She decided to not talk to her and turned to the other way. She continued going until she reached her first class door. Her first class was chemistry. The class was almost filled and Regan sat down on her seat. She looked down at her phone but without doing anything. Her attention was taken away when she noticed Vesper sitting beside."Hi," Regan said."Hi," she replied."Can you give me some of chemistry notes?" Vesper asked."Sure, here you go," Regan replied sliding the notebook to her. Vesper threw her a weird look but didn't say anything. The teacher entered the class and Regan sighed. She wasn't in mood to do anything. She didn't even know what she wanted to do. Everything seemed pointless and it looked like everything she was doing, had no purpose at all.The teacher started to drone on the lesson the class lazily followed. Regan was lost in thought and then looked at Vesper, she was making doodles in her notebook. The lesson was boring after all. She suddenly felt a hard tug at her arm."Hey, where's your mind on? I told you three times to give me a pencil," Vesper said annoyingly with a low voice.Regan didn't say anything and gave her a pencil."Stop zoning out," Vesper said. Regan threw her a glare and crossed her arms."Hey, Regan," the voice echoed in her mind.

She immediately got a shiver running down her spine.

"Hey, voice," she retorted, trying to sound angry in her mind."Nice outfit, have you been living inside some cave?" He asked with a taunting voice.Regan looked at her outfit, she was wearing baggy jeans and a tee shirt but what did the cave have to do with it?She clenched her fists, trying to ignore the voice taunting her from within. Taking a deep breath, she focused on the present moment and tried to push his comments aside."Wolf cave?"She refused to let his words get to her and turned her attention back to the lesson, determined to shake off Sirius's irritating presence and focus on the task at hand."Or.... kitten's cave?"She chuckled unwittingly at this, but when she realized, she quickly covered her mouth, cursing herself for laughing at his remarks. How could she do this? What if everyone heard her?"Kitten's cave? Do cats live in caves? What kind of bullshit is this?" She spoke in her mind."Well, kittens like you probably do." Was the reply she got."Hey, what are you laughing for?" Vesper suddenly asked, confusion written all over her face."I wasn't laughing," Regan quickly replied."Oh really, I heard you. You were lou-"Regan got confused as to why she stopped talking but right there, she felt a presence beside her and she didn't have to look up to see it was the teacher."Oh, crap.""Regan, how many times have I called on you, what is so important for you more then the lesson?" The teacher asked sternly and with a furious look."Guess I got called out as important here."Regan's blood boiled at his comment but she remained calm, she couldn't snap or yell in her mind at him, it seemed like if she did, everyone would hear her."You can leave the class and pull your mind together young lady, there's no need to disturb everyone else," the teacher said with her angry voice and with the average angry teacher stare."Oh, now you're getting kicked out because of me, how amusing."Regan's fists curled as much as her nails digged deeper into her skin."Shut up!"Gasps were heard around the class, and Regan realized she said this out loud. She realized she had done one of her biggest mistakes by yelling this out loud. This was all his fault after all."What did you just say Regan?!" Teacher yelled again."She must be enraged now," thought Regan."She is," he retorted."Miss, I am sorry, I didn't mean to say that...I said that to..." Regan looked at the teacher and trailed off not knowing what to say."Said that to who?!""Come on, say it. Say you said it to me."Regan bit her lower lip. What was it to say? She would never say she said it to someone in her mind. She already had made a fool of herself."I-I don't know, I was thinking about something else. Forgive me," Regan said."I'll let you go easy that time Regan, but there won't be another time. You've got to do cleaning on the library and extra homeworks. I'll talk with your aunt about this," teacher said with a stern voice. When hearing about her aunt, Regan shivered. Monica didn't have to know this. Why? Just why?The teacher walked away to continue doing what she was doing earlier.Regan sighed and lowered her head on the desk."I can't believe you said that to miss Claire," Vesper muttered."I didn't say it to her," Regan retorted."To who did you say it then?"Regan didn't reply and turned to the other side, continuing to lay her head on the desk. But he didn't get it. He still continued to talk in her mind."Well, I know you need some sort of company. After all, you know that everyone else is an idiot, including your friend.""Get the fuck out of my head," Regan yelled internally. She heard his chuckle, and she felt even more frustrated, "you're not even real." She said, although she knew she wasn't just hallucinating."Ah, but you know I'm real. I'm not just some voice in the back of your head. Yes, you can believe that too, you can believe you're crazy and insane but it's not going to change anything."Regan couldn't understand it. How can he talk to freely, so vividly in her mind? It was as if he was right there, sitting next to her, mocking her around. She couldn't believe it."Look, I don't know what the hell you want but I don't have time for this crap. I have other problems and you better get lost and leave me alone!"He went silent for a while. But then, he spoke again. "Alright. I won't bother you for a while. But know, I'm always here, haunting you." And with that, he shut it.
