He’d been smiling up until that point; not so much after my question. “I tried to get an appointment. No luck. For one, I’m not a student. For two, hadn’t been a science major, even when I was a student. Neither are you, and so the secretary, as I said, said no luck. He rarely sees anyone, least of all undergrads who aren’t going into the field.”

I sat down. I took a bite of pizza, shoulders slumping. Todd typed some stuff on his laptop. “This is the guy. Looks like a stuffy jerk.”

I nearly choked on my next chomp. Fate! Fate had jammed its fickle finger up my butt. Not a bad feeling, mind you, just, you know, kind of shocking. “He comes into the coffee shop! Doug has a huge crush on him!”

Todd looked at the photo again. “On him?”

He looked like Martin Mull, only more collegiate. I shrugged. “There’s no accounting for taste.”

“Is the guy even gay?”
