“I knew you’d go searching for your parents someday, Lucas,” she said.

“And you’re not upset?”

She sighed. “Would you love me any less if you had them in your life?”

“Of course not!”

“And I won’t love you any less, either, if you should find them. And I hope you do.”

“You do?”

“I do,” she replied. “You need to know what happened to you. I get that. And you need to know what happened to them. I get that as well. Plus, there’s plenty of room in your heart for all of us. I know that more than I know anything else. It’s who you are. It’s who you’ve always been. You’re…special.”

I felt a faint blush creep up my neck. “You’re just saying that because I’m your son.”

She laughed. “No, you’re a pain in the ass because you’re my son; you’re special because that’s who you are.”
