How It All Began

Kaiser was in the kitchen with her 16years old daughter when she heard the door slammed opened.

"Kasier..., Kaiser...., Kaiser..." Godson's deafening, wrathful voice shattered the silence and peaceful atmosphere present in the house.

"Coming...."

she hurriedly dried her hands with a napkin and rushed out, living the kitchen with Smitta sited behind the table.

"Why are you......." she became but before she could complete her statement, she received a slap on her cheeks. "ha..." She cried, falling hard to the tiled floor.

She held her cheeks, turning to glance at her husband.

"Did you think I will never find out, you disgusting bitch.."

Kasier who didn't understand what was going on stared sceptically at her husband. She had never seen him like this before since this past years of marriage. "what could really be going on?" she thought to herself.

"What are you talking about Godson? Did you have a bad day at work?"

"Bad day huh?" He chuckles, about to hit his wife again but was interrupted.

"Dad....." a voice cried.

He lifted his eyes to see his daughter standing at the entrance of the kitchen, looking aghast at the scene before her eyes. There was a subdued silence as he stared at her for a short while and dashed off to the room.

"Mum...," she rushed up to where her mother was and knelt beside her. "are you okay?"

kasier lifted her face to her daughter, faking a smile, "Yes dear....Don't worry about me." she assured but was betrayed by her tears.

"You're not mum..." she helped her up, taking her to sit on the sofa in the living room.

Smitta couldn't understand anything that was going on. "Why is Dad like this?" she glanced at he back of her father which had already disappeared into his room, hugging onto her mother.

The rest of the evening passed by with an awkward silence. Everything suddenly seems on a stand still. Dinner was set but there was no sign of her father joining them. She sat quietly glancing expectantly at the stairs for her father but there was no sign of him.

"Mum..., is Dad not joining us?"

Kasier sighed, curbing her daughter's face.

"I don't think so dear. He might be busy working on some documents. Don't worry, he will have his when he is ready."

This excuse didn't really go down well with Smitta. She really felt that something was wrong but couldn't place a hand on what it could be. She cocked her head anyways, just to make her mother feel relaxed. Some few minutes later, They were done with their meals. She helped her mother packed the dishes to the kitchen and retired to her room.

"Dad has never acted this way before, what could be the issue? He didn't even join us for dinner which I find more weird."

This thought kept running through her mind as she trolled to the washroom to freshen up. After about 30minutes, she returned to her room, got into her night wear and glided on her bed. She stayed awake for a while and slowly drifted off to sleep with the hope of everything returning back to normal the next day.

It was a beautiful Tuesday morning. Smitta woke up for school as usual. She freshened up, got dressed and dashed out of her room. Checking from her watch, she noticed that she was already running late. She glided down the stairs, not ready for the sight that met her eyes.

"Mum...." she gasped, rushing down the stairs to the dinning table where her mother sat. "what happened to your face?"

"It's nothing dear, you should hurry with your breakfast and get going. You will be late for school."

"But mum...."

"I'm fine sweetheart I just fell off the chair when I was trying to bring down the container on the cabinet."

"O..kay mum..." She sceptically answered with a nod, settling in her chair for her breakfast. Soon, the horn of the school bus was heard. Smitta picked up her bag and threw it over her shoulders.

"Going now mum...." she peeked her cheeks. "Have a nice day, and be more careful not to fall off again."

"Alright dear, I will be more careful. You should take care of yourself too."

"Okay..." she gestured with a fingers and rushed out of the house.

"Good morning Mr. Thomas..." she greeted when she got to the bus.

"Good morning Smitta..., how are you?"

"I'm good.." She replied and took her seat two steps away from the driver's seat. After some few seconds, the bus sped off.

She sat quietly to herself, looking through the window with flashback of yesterday's incident running through her mind as the bus passed through the town, picking up the rest of the kids. She was so deep in thoughts and didn't even notice when someone took a seat beside her.

"Hi..." she heard a voice uttered beside her.

She slowly turned her gaze to meet a young boy smiling at her.

"Hi...." she replied indifferently and turned back to glancing through the window again.

"I'm Kaileys Woods, what about you?" He stretched his hands, introducing himself but was ignored.

He stared at his stretched hand and winced, "I guess this is not the right time." He mumbled, drawing back his hand as he relaxed back in his seat.

He kept stealing glances at the quite girl sitting beside him.

"Mm..., are you okay? You've been sitting quietly for a while now. Are you....."

Smitta who was pissed by the annoying intruder threw a glare at him.

"Will you stop being annoying right now?"

"Well..., I'm sorry for being annoying. I just wanna know your name and probably become good friends if you don't mind. I'm a new student here

My parents got transfered here a week ago."

Smitta sighed, rolling her eyes.

"Well...,I'm Smitta Banks and I have been living here ever since I was born."

"Woow..., that's cool..."

"Huh...? She gasped, "What's cool about this?"

"Everything." Can you believe my parents have to different location every 6months? The most is a year. And due to this, I also have to change schools. It's the more reason why I have no friends. It's kind of boring you know.... "

"Well..., I guess so...."

"Anyway, you've been sitting quietly here for some time now, will you mind sharing your problem with me? I might be of help."

She chuckled,

"Don't worry, it's not anything you can help. Besides, I just met you."

"Alright, alright, I understand if you don't want to talk about it but I think you should smile more often. It's suits you. You looked scary with that stern look you had earlier on."

She smiled, "I guess I started on a bad note this morning. I had something on my mind."

"I see..., I heard it's a bad omen to start a day on a bad note."

"Huh...?" She chortled, "What a believe you've got there."

"Yeah..., trust me. You shouldn't start your day with a sulking look."

"Mm...." She nodded with a chuckle.

They both kept chatting to know each other more and soon, Smitta have forgotten everything happening at home. The rest of the ride to school continued with them laughing and giggling.
