They were schoolmates in junior high.

With the speakerphone on, Leroy Bennett's voice came through: "I know."

Suddenly, the room fell silent.

Even Mildred Donovan forgot to gesture and pricked up her ears to listen.

Shannon Evans looked bewildered: "How could you know?" She had secretly given the love letters.

She had always thought Leroy Bennett didn't remember her from junior high, especially since the only time she caught his attention on purpose was by bumping into him, and they had no other interaction.

He was in the best class. She was in the worst, class seventeen.

"Because your handwriting is ugly."

Shannon Evans writes chicken scratch.

"In the second year of middle school, during the mid-term exam, your essay was posted on the bulletin board as a negative example of straying from the topic because you insulted your teacher by calling him bald in it."
