Chapter 41
Brian had an urge to cry, until Sensei’s words came to him. “Action cures fear.”
Jim blinked out of a zombie-like stare. “We go together.”
Room by room, they checked the small house and didn’t find her. “She never goes out unless someone drives her to the doctor and she always locks the door.” He sucked a breath of courage. “We check again, everywhere.”
In her bedroom, they finally found her, squeezed between the small space of the bed and wall, the sheets half off. “Mrs. Guardino!”
Jim moved aside the bed and Brian got her onto the mattress, but his trembling hands couldn’t detect a pulse at her wrist.
Jim ordered, “Check it her neck. Take more deep breaths. They’ll balance you. I’ll call an ambulance. She’s warm and her chest is moving.”
