“No phone calls?”
“Nope,” he said firmly.
“He hasn’t even gotten anybody to ask on his behalf? Not your boss or mutual friends or anything?”
Gerry didn’t bother to tell her they had no mutual friends anymore. “No. Nothing.”
She grinned. “Doesn’t sound like a guy that only does what he wants to me. It sure doesn’t sound like a person that doesn’t care about anybody else’s needs.”
Gerry opened his mouth to counter, but Angie turned and walked down the stairs. “I’m just saying,” she said over her shoulder. “It sounds like a pretty decent start.”
As the car pulled out of the driveway, Gerry heard the screen door open and within seconds felt the warmth of his mother’s hand on his back. “You staying the night, Gerry?”
He shook his head. “Thanks, but no. I should get back.” He turned his head when she stepped beside him and smiled at her. “I’m only an hour or so away. I’ll be fine.”
