“I don’t want to have to—” Gerry had to cut himself off, only realizing he was about to add ‘say goodbye to you again’ at the last second. He swallowed hard and firmed his shoulders. “See you ever again.”
That would work. And it was just as close to the truth as his first thought had been. He stepped to the curb and lifted his arm to hail a cab.
“Can I at least give you my number?” Mark asked. “In case you change your mind?”
“I won’t.”
A yellow cab pulled up alongside him and switched off its overhead light. Nothing else was said as Gerry climbed into the back seat, and he surprised himself by keeping his voice steady enough to give the driver his address. He surprised himself even more by not looking back.
