“It’s not…” had been all Gerry could get out. The rest of him had refused to continue the lie.

A half an hour later, with two garbage bags full of nothing but clothes and a few pictures, he’d dropped a dime in the pay phone and dialed. He could barely keep his voice steady. “I need to speak to Mark. I don’t know what to do.”7

Gerry had considered buying a new suit. One trip through Barneys, however, was more than enough to squash that particular bug. Besides, as far as Gerry was concerned, there were far nicer things out there than the six-by-two, double-breasted, wide-lapelled atrocities the big boys were calling fashionable these days. Whatever happened to wanting to look good? Or had the straight guys got their noses so far out of joint that the only thing they found acceptable on a male frame was big, square, and ugly?
