"Why?"
Shufeng downed his whiskey in one go, obviously tipsy now that he had been drinking one-on-one with his brother right after dinner.
"Why must we suffer without the love of our lives present right here and now?"
He Shen didn't want to answer the question. He knew it was rhetoric given the emotional toll the disappearance of Lin Fa and Yan Ran (Shu Xian, who's still alive) in their lives. He just shook his head, taking a shot of his whiskey in one go.
"I know I mustn't be this sad because I know that your Lin Fa disappeared years before my Yan Ran came into existence. You should be more sadder than I. Yet I--"
"Older brother, hush…"
He Shen interrupted as he put his hand on his brother's to slow him down from drinking. To Shufeng, this might seem like his younger brother extending his worry and care but to him, He Shen just wanted to stop talking about Lin Fa's death.
