Chapter 17

Danny quietly urged, “Tell me.”

Evan studied Danny’s face at length. What was it about this man that just naturally inspired trust? Because Evan wanted to trust him. Wanted him as an ally. So maybe it was best if Danny had a clearer picture of the kind of people he was giving up his freedom for.

Evan took a deep breath and began his story. “I think my father must have arranged it, but I don’t know why. My mom dropped me off at the Dwyer house. They wouldn’t let her in, of course. So some scary, silent lady took me in to him.” Evan shook his head at the memory of how blissfully ignorant he’d been. “I was excited—other kids loved visiting their grandpas and got toys and trips to the zoo. When I first saw him, he was sitting in a huge, old chair. I thought he’d hold me on his lap—like Santa Claus.”

Danny chuckled at that.
