Chapter 23 - Primm(4)

Leaving the deputy to do his own things, Vito and I went back to Hayes, who was already waiting for us, near the bridge. As soon as he saw us, the smile on his face grew a bit, before he signaled his men to lower their weapons.

"I take it, all of the convicts are either dead or subdued right?"

"All of them are dead, thanks to their leader turning his back towards us while wearing a fuel tank."

"In the end, they went out quickly, which let's be honest, not many of their kind can say that. So…I know that my superiors would be against using you guys for such a thing, but despite that, I'm willing to reward you two, just as I said. Take this, while it's not a fortune,150 caps are all I can give you two without going completely broke myself, also from now on, any NCR troopers that are close to you will come and help you if you were to be in a fight."

"Thank you, Lieutenant, but there's another thing that might need your input. Deputy Beagle, the so-called last law enforcer of the town, asked us to find a sheriff, and while there's a protectron inside the casino that could act as one, I think that the NCR would do a better job than a robot."

"Hmmm, to tell you the truth, Primm is a strategic location, there's no doubt about that, however for me to make such a decision, I would first need the approval from my superiors, then I would be able to give you an answer. But I'm more than sure that those guys would accept, after all, they sent me here to take care of the town once the convicts leave it."

"Would you look at that kiddo, you just helped the NCR get a new town to pay taxes for them?"

Both Hayes and I smiled at Vito's joke before the lieutenant left to contact the main camp. Meanwhile, Vito and I went back to the hotel, after it would be a pity to leave all of those weapons and loot those convicts had on them for the NCR. It didn't took us long at all to gather what little guns were left in decent condition after the explosion as well as all of the drugs and caps we could find.

Thought before we left the hotel, I decided to check the safe that Deputy Beagle to us about, and unsurprisingly enough, there was some loot inside the safe. A few seconds after I used my power on the lock, the safe door jolted slightly, releasing dust as I pulled it open, revealing the loot that was inside. Even though it wasn't exactly the definition of a fortune, there was a pile of caps, some sort of modified revolver with twenty bullets for it, a book as well as four stacks of pre-war money. While the caps, bullets, cash, and the book were quite the haul, what stood out for me was the revolver, so without even hesitating, I pulled out the revolver and examine it. Thanks to my ability I managed to find out that, it was a .357 revolver, which wasn't exactly that common from what I'd found. Besides the caliber of the gun, I've also learned that the gun was modified by its previous owner as it had a long barrel, and the metal was painted black with gold engraving, at the same time the handle was made of some sort of polished ivory, with a black clover marked on it. However, the cherry on top was on the ejector tube, where the word "Lucky" was engraved, most likely that being the name of this special gun.

[Name: Lucky

Type: Revolver .357

Damage: More than enough for all of the unarmored enemies

Special effect: Critical chance increased – more penetration and increased damage on armored targets

Value: 2500 caps]

Unlike the assault rifles that were just some normal assault rifles, this revolver was anything but normal. The only downside was the rather scarce amount of bullets for this kind of caliber, then again I doubt I would use such a good gun on some day-to-day raiders.

"Now, that's a fine gun. Do you plan to keep it or would you sell it?"

"To tell you the truth Vito, while the gun is definitely valuable, I'd rather keep something like this in case we need something with a little bit of punch in it."

"Well then, it seems that you just got lucky."

I facepalmed when I heard his sad attempt at a pun. While I view him as some fatherly figure, I hate hearing his jokes, at least the bad ones.

"C'mon, kiddo, it wasn't that bad. It was funny."

"It wasn't."

"Kids these days…"

After we packed our loot, we left the hotel and went to the casino where we found Deputy Beagle talking with the old man. As soon as they saw us, both of them came towards us, well the deputy was being dragged by the old man, but let's be honest that wasn't something strange considering that the man seemed to be one of the biggest cowards in the whole continent.

"Glad to see that you two are still alive. I want to thank you for doing what the NCR and this idiot couldn't do in weeks. Even though we aren't exactly rich, all of us put together a reward for you two, so please accept it."

Johnson handed me a bag of caps, but I rejected them. After all, compared to the two of us, these people need the caps since their only income was the hotel and the casino. I'd rather do some good than become someone like the NCR top leaders, that would do anything in their power to get richer and richer at the cost of hundreds of lives.

"Thank you for the reward, sir, but we can't accept it. We already got more than enough from the NCR and the convicts, so please don't give us your money. I'm more than sure that the damage those low lives did to the town would require quite a lot of caps, so please use the money to rebuild the town rather than paying us."

"You know son, if I didn't know better, I'd say that you have an ulterior motive for doing this."

The old man was quite sharp, I give him that. Though he was right about that, while I'm not someone that would let a man suffer, at the same time I like to think that I'm not a hero either. Instead, I want to have a place in this town once the NCR rebuilt it and transforms this town into a proper hub of activity.
