Chapter 1: Escape from the Vault (Part 1)

He quickly brought up his left arm and looked at the bulky, yet light, pip-boy strapped to it. Looking through the different screens with the dials, knobs and buttons, he instantly stopped at the screen that displays his special stats. His eyes widened yet again from the sight of the special stats with all 10's lined up next to them from top to bottom. His strength, perception, endurance, charisma, intelligence, agility and luck are all at ten.

He couldn't believe his eyes. After quickly going to the main menu and then the list of skills, he confirmed his suspicions. His name is displayed as Jayson, ten of his thirteen skills are at 27, his three tag skills (stealth, small guns and speech) are at 42 and his seven specials are all at 10. This confirms it. He's not just the Lone Wanderer from vault 101; he's his character, Jayson, that he just made.

It all makes sense though. Since he woke up here not that long ago, his body has felt abnormally powerful, healthy, durable, light and flexible. His mind and senses also feels like it is on overdrive and there's some strange feelings too. Like being around other people feels completely natural and a strange feeling like an invisible force is bending around his very presence.

It's not just that either. His mind is full of new information about a whole bunch of stuff he never even knew about. Unarmed combat, how different kinds of weapons work, knowledge about fighting/aiming, knowledge of electronics, repair, programming, medicine, knowledge of the human body, how locks/traps work, basic knowledge of all sciences and a whole bunch of other stuff. He knew all this knowledge is coming from the thirteen skills listed on his pip-boy; that's not all though. He also has memories of living in the vault. His tenth birthday party, the GOAT exam, two years working in management as a shift supervisor and a whole bunch of other stuff. It's almost as if his and the character he created, Jayson's, memories merged into one.

Looking through the pip-boy and checking it's functions, he noticed some differences from the game. The STATS section is still the same, with it being very paranormal of how it knows all the information it does; the DATA one though has a small difference. It still has the local and world map and also the radio; the Quests and Notes tabs though are not there. Instead there's a tab called Journal. Looking through it, he figured out that he can input information and organize it. It works just like the Notes and Quest tabs but combined and with only a small paranormal feeling.

The ITEMS section though is very paranormal. It was originally a blank screen with multiple tabs, but after he experimented by willing the 10mm pistol into it to see if it's some sort of pocket inventory, it disappeared and information about the pistol appeared on the screen. After a small shock and going around the room and storing a bunch of stuff into it, he figured out the basics of how it works.

The weird inventory functions around weight, touch and ability to carry. He can will an item into it if he can pick it up and hold it, but the weight of the item is distributed over his body. So the more weight of items he has in it, the heavier the invisible weight gets on him. The limit is determined by how much weight/pressure he can withstand (he could theoretically crush himself if he's not careful). He also did a few more quick experiments and figured out it does not conserve speed or directional force. He also wants to see if items age in the inventory or not and to test if he can put an item into it that's on someone else. He doubts it, but he would like to try nonetheless.

He put a few of the small important items from the bedroom into it and equipped the 10mm pistol. For now, his name will be Jayson. He's perfectly fine with taking up this new name (he actually quite liked role playing when he was younger). He then walked out into the main room and then into the vault hallways, with the sirens still blaring all over the place.

They, now Jayson, looked around the hallway and as he turned right, he saw a guard, Officer Kendall, run around the corner, seeing him.

"It's you! Stop right there!"

Before either of them could react though, three radroaches appear out of some vents and start lunging at Kendall. Officer Kendall kicked one of them away before the other two swarmed around him.

Remembering this scene in the game and about the Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System, Jayson thought about activating it to see if it's really a thing. Suddenly, everything, including himself, froze. His vision zoomed in on one of the radroaches, with whatever part of the body he's focusing on glowing green and showing a percentage of how likely he'll hit it from this distance with his currently equipped weapon.

Marvelling at this ability for a bit, he then focused and, by thought, focused on shooting a few rounds into each oversized roach. Time then suddenly continued and his hands moved on its own; drawing the 10mm pistol and shooting a couple bullets into each roach consecutively. The usage of Vats caused a bit of mental strain but it slowly, or rather quickly, started to fade away.

Officer Kendall was a bit stunned about what just happened, but then focused back onto Jayson. Before he could do anything though, Jayson drew the pistol on him.

"Please back down Officer Kendall. I don't want to shoot you."

Kendall froze as he looked at the drawn pistol, not knowing what to do.

"We never met Kendall. You just killed some roaches and then continued on your search for me. Isn't that right?" Jayson said as his 10mm pistol continued to point at Kendall, completely still as Jayson looked him in the eyes.

Swallowing a bit, Kendall backed off a bit. "Y-yeah. We never met."

After looking at Jayson for a bit, Kendall retreated slowly down the right corridor and through the doors.

Exhaling, Jayson lowered his pistol. He didn't really want to shoot any of the guards here, since their just following orders from the deranged Overseer. Well, that's just really an excuse. He's just never killed another human before. He knows he'll eventually have to though; there's plenty of raiders out in the wastes that won't think twice about shooting him.

Going up to the corpses of the radroaches, he picked one up and willed it to go into his inventory. With it succeeding and feeling some slight weight distributed over his body, he did the same with the other two. It's nice knowing he can store the corpses of creatures he kills; it'll make transporting and dismantling them easier.

Continuing along to the left and down the long hallway, he noticed that the place is way bigger than in the game. Passing by a bunch of closed residences and the bathrooms, he eventually saw Butch rushing down towards them with a scared expression.

"Jayson! You gotta help me! My moms trapped with some radroaches!"

He nodded. "Sure. Lead the way."

Butch lead them further down through the tunnels and eventually to his and his mum's residence. "Please. You gotta save her!"

"Don't worry Butch, I will."

Jayson readied his pistol and opened the door to Butches moms room, seeing her cowing on the ground being attacked by three radroaches. Just like the game except for the nasty wounds the roaches are inflicting on her.

Drawing their pistol, they aim it at one and fired a round, killing it. They quickly aim at the other two and was able to kill them all in a few shots. With 42 in his small guns skill, a well maintained pistol and being so close to his target, he was able to kill them in relative ease. Having a 10 in perception also helped.

Butch then came running in and suddenly hugged him; tears could be seen on his face. "You did it! You actually did it!"

Letting go, Butch took off his tunnel snake jacket and handed it over to him. "Thank you so much Jayson. Here, have my tunnel snake jacket as thanks. And hey, I'm sorry about how I treated ya in the past. We're good, right?"

"No problem Butch. And don't worry, we're good" Jayson accepted the jacket and walked out, storing it in the inventory when he was out of sight.

He has the memories of Butch bullying him, but he doesn't really resent him. He knows his real character through the games. He's not a bad guy; he was just a very confused and troubled child.

Heading along, he eventually came up to the diner; with it being much bigger than the games. Inside he killed another three radroaches that were swarming over Grandma Taylor's body. Bending down and closing her eyelids after feeling no pulse, he exited the diner and continued along.

Passing by a bunch more closed rooms, he eventually walked up some stairs and came across Stanley, Andy the Mr. Handy and Officer Gomez; with some burnt roaches in a pile next to them.

Officer Gomez quickly came up to him but unarmed. "Jayson! Are you ok?"

"I'm ok Officer Gomez, you don't have to worry."

"That's good." He sighed in relief. "Don't worry, I won't report you. You've always been a good kid."

"Thanks Officer Gomez. I'll never forget this" Jayson have a small smile as he replied.

Gomez chuckled a bit. "No problem kid. Go after your dad if you can. Oh, and I'm sorry about Jonas... Officer Mac was out of control."

"It's ok. And thanks."

Gomez nodded and walked away down one of the corridors; continuing his 'search' of Jame's son.

Jayson walked towards the medical bay, and after nodding to Stanley that was fixing up Andy, he entered the medical office. Looking around, he eventually found what he was looking for; the Vault-Tec Medicine bobble head. Picking it up, a sudden transparent green screen appeared in front of him.

<Found Bobblehead>

You've found a Vault-Tec Limited Edition Bobblehead!

The inscription on the base reads "The smart man knows a bandage only hides his wounds."

Your Medicine skill has been permanently increased by 10 points.

Willing the screen to go away, he opened his eyes wide as more information about medicine, medical practices, illnesses, medical procedures, information about the body and a bunch of other information entered his head. After a few moments he shook his head and regained his thoughts; putting the Bobblehead in his inventory.

He then went up to the secret safe in the office that's behind a picture frame, but even with 10's in all his specials, he only had 27 in lockpicking and wasn't able to crack it. He knew he'll be back sometime anyways, so he could wait 'till then.

Finally walking out of the medical bay, he went towards the door and stairwell leading up to the atrium. Taking a deep breath, he opened the door and headed up. Getting ready for what's going to happen next.

The first official chapter!

I was originally gonna write ‘Escape from the Vault’ as one whole chapter. But with how long it was getting, I decided to split it up.
