Chapter 18: Tabula Rasa

Jonathan listened as Vic ranted about being taken advantage of for as long as Jonathan had worked there, how many times had Vic had to cover for him, how many times had he was late.

Jonathan listened, but it was as if all he could hear was his own ears ringing.

When Vic finally stopped, Jonathan said, “Okay. Thank you, sorry. I’ll let myself out.”

He opened the door and walked out. His mind was all static. He glided through the café, and out the door. He was walking, he knew, but it felt like he was falling forward without hitting the ground.

Jonathan was fired. He had no money. There just wasn’t a lot of work in town that he could do that would pay enough to make rent, and that was with Kelly offering him generous rates.

Rent. Rent was due in a week.

A frustrated tear built at the corner of his eye, but he gritted his teeth and wiped it away. Just get home. Just get home, d*mn it.
