As I slowly take off the armor from the dead corpse of the demon Queen, I can't help but wonder something...why was it always demon KING? Was king just a term, not caring of gender?
It could be. Maybe there were demons queens before this one, but I'm not sure.
While pondering this, I start feeling up the horns of the helmet unconsciously, as if I'm trying to discern the authenticity of these horns...I'll have to ask Lyca or Loren about this.
Since the cave has already dropped some of the rubble from the ceiling in giant bits, it was a bit hard finding my way out, but I still managed.
I reach the entrance of the little fighting arena we had and I encounter the either crushed or burnt bodies of my men and the demon queen's men.
The burnt ones was from me and the crushed ones was from the burnt ones getting squished by some falling rubble from the ceiling or from one of the demon queen's charges.
Honestly, I might as well as call her the rhino queen...huh, it does make sense. She is highly sought after, people who want her, want her horns, she is almost extinct...heh, the more you know?
Just as I was carrying her armor over my shoulder and back to the entrance, I hear a soft sound. It isn't loud and most likely, the regular human ear would catch it.
It was so faint, that I was wondering if it was just me. It could have been the ringing from the silence for more than 2 minutes, but this wasn't silence I was hearing.
It wasn't fearing, but it was...a cry. A wailing sound from something that I don't know.
Now, this may be a trap...or it may be a baby. I'm leaning towards trap, but you can never know.
I grab one of the more intact human bodies as a bait or shield and proceed on my way to the wailing. However, no matter where I go, it seems that the wailing stays the same volume.
The echo doesn't change, the volume doesn't change, nothing.
That's when I realized...could it be that the baby is outside?
So, passing my the pile of valuable armor I left behind for a while, I step outside the burnt wooden doors to the long, winding hallway that lead me here.
Walking down the hallway for maybe 5 to 7 minutes, I hear the wailing get louder. I walk closer for another minute, it gets louder.
...I'm getting close.
As I keep walking with the body in front of me to protect me from any traps, I suddenly hear it exponentially increase in volume. Right beside me, to my left, the wailing is coming from.
'...maybe the wall had a bad day?'
Silently chuckling at my own joke, I start making my way into the fake compartment that I think is there. I start shooting my rays of light to melt away the rocks and soon, a tiny hole opens up.
I look inside and see blackness. I guess that this little compartment was meant to be hidden away, right?
Continuing my burning of the rocks, the cries start getting louder. It isn't because I'm getting closer, it's because the temperatures inside that compartment must be scorching.
Like being cooked in a stone oven at the temperature that rocks FUCKING MELT, I think I'd cry too.
The little peephole turns into something that I can fit my entire arm into after only 4 minutes of burning the rocks away. The cries start getting softer and softer, most likely the baby suffocating from the flames or being cooked from the heat.
Another 4 minutes go by and the cries are basically non-existent. It's more of wheezing and struggling to breath rather than crying. The hole is now big enough for me to fit my upper body into.
This is great.
I wait for the surrounding are to cool down then I light my finger up like a torch and start looking around. Inside, I saw what looked to be some sort of bunker.
It had food supplies of maybe up to a month, water supplies for up to 5 months, a shitting and peeing corner, some sort of oxygen ventilator system and...a passed out baby.
I pick up the baby and hold it into my arms. As I unwrap the cloak to check it's gender, I confirm that it's a male...now, there is the question to be answered.
Why did they hide this baby? Could he be the son of the demon queen? Will he be the next demon king in a thousand years?
No, the right now is what's important, and what's important is that I have an alive baby in my arms. Granted, it's barely hanging in there since I just cooked him to near death, but alive he is.
I touch the top of his head and feel two little bumps growing out of his scalp. These must be his horns, right?
'.....I can't kill this baby'
Which is the half-truth. It is more of "I don't NEED to kill this baby". Judging by the redness of his horns, I can safely guess that his parent must have been the owner of the horns on the helmet of the demon queen.
And from what I think, I think that the demon queen severed her own horns very roughly so that it would be worth less to the humans. A very selfless move, I'd have to say.
While in my arms, he cuddles around my bicep and starts looking for something to suckle. I give him my thumb and continue to search his little man cave...or maybe furnace.
After searching some more, I found a letter sitting beside his food supply covered in condensation and some parts are burnt black with the ashes from the magma I created.
The letter read:
"Dear Little Abby,
Live. Keep on fighting the humans, and one day, you or one of your sons will win. Fight for the good of our peo0e. Fight for our freedom.
Remember Abaddon, we are no livestock.
Love, Mom"
'...how heartwarming. Demons thinking about fighting back? Is this maybe why the demon kings keep appearing despite the major extermination of the demonic race?'
Looking at the baby now named Abaddon suckling my thumb, I have a sudden urge...an urge to raise an heir to myself.
As a human and as a machiavellian, I seriously despise thinking about my own death, however, I do need an heir. Granted, I am half-Phoenix, but who knows?
Maybe I'll need to hand over Michael & Min-chul's Mossy Emporium to this little Abaddon one day. Maybe I'll have him be my trusted bodyguard. Who knows...
All I know is that this Abaddon baby will be useful in the future...and it wouldn't be so bad if I kept a child....right? His horns haven't even grown in yet, for crying out loud.
