8 Character Creation

Using the fast login option he quickly shifted locations into a large grassy field. It appeared as mile upon miles of just open plains, a large golden mirror stood beside him. Walking over towards the mirror he could see himself reflected into it Suddenly a small man appeared behind him. The man looked like an old sage that you'd find at the top of some grand tower or library.

"Hello Traveler, welcome to Evotania, I am Ialdir servant of Estus, God of Time and Records," the man said.

"Hello, are you here to help me?" he asked turning around to look at the man.

"Yes, I will also be guiding you in the tutorials later, now let me ask do you wish to use your current avatar as a template or restart on a fresh one," Ialdir asked.

"I already restarted, so this one is fine," he replied.

"Good good, It is recommended to always restart, body modification I'm afraid may not transfer over very well, Animal ears on a beastkin, for example, may give you an extra pair of ears," Ialdir said.

"Wouldn't that be a bugged avatar then," he replied.

"Hmm, it would be more of a mutant avatar, the world will accept the deformities and treat them as such, some might be good or bad but it will affect how the world views you," Ialdir shrugged.

"What do you mean, does it give them an advantage," he asked.

"Maybe, maybe not, there are no records, I can't recommend that type of experimenting, it can also negatively affect your experience in Evotania," Ialdir said.

"Well thanks, so how do I start now then," he asked.

"Let's start with the races if you need any more information on any of them you can ask or follow the instructions provided, and no you cannot completely change your gender," Ialdir said.

Suddenly a bunch of different avatars of the respective races appeared beside him. He was able to see both genders and what they look like respectively. As he looked closer a notification and window appeared in front of him.

Please select a race for more details.

-See Subraces Traits-

He read their basic respective traits, he liked the humans because it was more of a blank slate, but races could have more powerful bonuses with a downside. "Let's look at elves first," he thought, suddenly the tiny screen changed. He already knew he wanted to be either a human, beastkin and not really an elf.

~High Elves~

The first of the elven race, they look down upon the other races and even the other elves. However, they still allow the other races in their territories but, they must adhere to stricter rules. Most high elves but not all descend from more noble heritage.

~Dark Elves~

Dark Elves are typically outcasts, they blend in with the darkness of the night and underworld. They are not inherently evil, though some religions like to associate them with followers of Cora the Goddess of Darkness.

-Dark Elves Trait-

Perfect Night Vision - Dark elves can see perfectly clear in total darkness.

Born from the Dark - once High Elves, Cora's power seduced members of the race and pulled them into Darkness, Her Blessings and gifts have remained throughout generations. All Dark Elves are born with the rarer Darkness attribute and proficiency.

Currently, the only elven subrace that interested him was High elves. He wasn't really interested though in the traits listed, they benefited more of a full caster. He decided to go back and look at the Beastkin Bloodlines. When he clicked on the menu, hundred of them appeared.

"What the hell, why are there so many," he asked.

"There is a bloodline associated with just about every beast in Evotania," he said.

"That's crazy besides traits what are the benefits of one bloodline compared to another," he asked.

"Respect and honor in the beastkin society, a measly cat doesn't compare to the larger more powerful tiger bloodline," Ialdir said.

"Is there a way to filter them," he asked.

"There is but it might just be easier to ask me what you are interested in and I'll just display options to you, you could also name an animal from your world Earth and compare it and I'll try and match it," Ialdir said.

"Wait you know about the animals on Earth," he asked.

"Yes, the creator informed us of your world and gave us a general idea of your ways Traveler," Ialdir replied.

Daniel had to think about the question more now, what would give him the best answer. He figured if he said the best defense he would probably get Turtle, or something similar.

"How about trying to fight a dragon completely by myself," he asked.

"Are you suicidal, there is no lesser race that fights them by themselves it is nearly impossible," Ialdir responded.

"Haha, really, so there was no legendary figures from the beastkins that defeated one," he asked.

"By themselves no, some of the great clans have defeated them before, but, hmmm only the crazy Paugatha's ever actually fought a dragon by themselves," Ialdir said.

"Why?" he asked.

"Traveler do you know of the Animal called a honey badger, the paugatha's share similar traits," Ialdir said.

"Can you show me the bloodline, I'm curious," he asked.

"Sure, they are a pretty strong bloodline, but extremely rare, they don't have a long lifespan though because they lack knowledge of magic and have no way to inherently counter it," Ialdir said.

Suddenly a new window appeared in front of him.

~Beastkin~

-Paugathas-

An uncommon species of Beastkin related to the Mustelidae beast family. Their characteristics resemble Earth's Honey badger. The reason the bloodline is uncommon is due to their lack of power and suicidal nature they do not live very long when they go to war, they will fearlessly challenge opponents that are much stronger them.

-Paugathas' Ferocity- In the heat of battle their bloodline becomes active they feel no fear and do not tire, this blessing or curse has caused the death of many of their kin. Pain is reduced by 50%, immune to mind-influencing status effects, stamina consumption reduced by 60% when injured, all bonuses are lost outside of combat.

-Paugathas' Resilience- Their skin is extremely tough, soft and flexible making it extremely difficult to grapple. Because of this reason, they tend to not wear armor depending completely on their own flesh and hide. Natural Armor class is increased by 5% per character level. Effects are reduced by the type of armor that is worn. The Paugathas have lesser poison resistance, the bloodline typically hunts and battles venomous creatures.

-Paugathas' Senses- A Paugathas beastkin will hunt whenever they are hungry or desire the hunt, Night or Day, they hunt. They are able to see in low light environments such as caves, their senses are similar to most Beastkins with exceptional hearing and smell.

-Fang and Claw- When in combat Paugathas morphs slightly letting their beastial instincts take over. Claws and Fangs are grown. They deal up to twice your Natural Armor in damage and have the same for durability, they are breakable and will inflict 10% of health as unavoidable damage upon the Paugathas if broken.

"What does it mean mind-influencing effects," he asked.

"There is a lot in the world, the reason no one but them challenges a dragon alone is because of their aura. Very powerful creatures can't hide their mana it surrounds them like a dense aura, weaker creatures become sluggish or petrified, some flee uncontrollably," Ialdir said.

"How does a group fight or counter that ability then," he asked.

"The density and power of the aura will be weakened as more creatures that oppose it enter, everything has mana in Evotania, don't think of just your normal mana pool, that is just one form of mana," Ialdir said.

"What do you mean exactly then, like my health and experience is also mana," he asked.

"Correct, mana is everywhere all around us, we naturally absorb it, how the mana influences your body will be up to you, there are methods of course to control your growth," Ialdir said.

"I understand," he said, he already knew about some of the systems of the world and how it works for the most part. he is considered a traveler which will not enter the worlds normal cycle of Reincarnation when a traveler dies their mana does not get dispersed by Anastasia the Goddess of Death. that is how creatures of the world gain levels and grow stronger, they collect a portion of the dispersed mana. The mana that isn't able to be collected is gathered by Maeve the Goddess of Life, to create a new life. There are also creatures like travelers that are considered Manabound. Manabound means that a being's mana isn't dispersed but a small fraction of it is lost when the body dies. For travelers and even some other powerful entities, it is just referred to as experience lost.

Normal monsters actually will die and remain dead forever. You could potentially hunt a species to extinction if you weren't stopped. Of course, Evotania's worlds size is said to be three times as large as earth and there are apparently other dimensional planes, It was also mentioned though that there are more evil creatures that are created through corrupted mana which can and will appear out of thin air. Demons, Abominations, Undead, and other monstrosities can appear through these means. They usually spawn in corrupted locations or dungeons they are considered locations where uncollected dispersed mana gathers and creates evil corrupted creatures. The creatures will kill senselessly feasting on the mana of their prey, they grow stronger as they kill, with each thing that dies nearby more corrupted creatures will spawn near those locations, it is even possible for creatures to evolve.

He needed to decide on his race, a Paugatha's reminded him of an RPG style monk's potential, he would have to focus on his natural armor though. "How difficult is it to get armor," he asked.

"I'm afraid I can't answer that question since it will pertain to each individual person differently," Ialdir replied.

He knew the game wanted to go for a more realistic factor, so more materials will drop than anything else, only humanoids like creatures should drop equipment. "Ok, here is a question then, which beastkin has the most defense," he asked.

"Each one varies with advantages and weakness, a turtle's shells will boast the greatest defense, but they have limited area coverage and can't wear armor properly, then you have the reptiles with armored scales that cover only certain areas, the rhino clan is also a great competitor," Ialdir said.

"So what advantage is there to the Paugathas resilience," he asked.

"The other bloodlines, have better raw flat scaling based off their level, they lack a balanced offense though, and then you have the more offensive nature creatures that lack a balanced defense, because of all of the racial differences the beastkin are constantly at war with one another in order to prove the superiority of their bloodline," Ialdir said.

He understood the potential of percentage scaling for flat numbers, but he also knew natural armor is based on attributes, and someone with armor will have the same bonus. The question he thought then is how effective is armor actually. "Armor could also slow me down, so beastkin is the route I need to take if I want to be a front line that can take blows when needed but avoid most of them," he thought. He went back to looking at the paugathas' it had pretty decent claws that would scale and get stronger, of course, it was unarmed fighting but he would have the ability to fight unarmed then pretty well.

He selected Paugatha's as his race, he looked around to see what changed on him. He looked into the mirror and noticed his ears were completely gone and were now higher on his head and his hair color resembled a honey badger. His Top hair became pitch white, while small tiny black ridges protruded on his scalp which was now his new ears. "I look pretty goofy," he said as he spun and saw his tiny little white tail.

"You can edit some of the details if you'd like, " Ialdir said.

"Can I change the hair color," he asked. As he was looking through the new options that appeared in front of him.

"You may, however, you must note, the changes will affect your beast form," Ialdir replied.

"Can you revert my hair color back to its original dark brown," He asked.

"Sure," Ialdir replied.

Suddenly Daniel's hair color returned to normal, it was strange to just see short hair covering where his ears used to be. "You mention beast form, that's where the bloodline becomes more active right," he asked.

"Yes, this is what you would look like," Ialdir replied snapping his fingers.

Suddenly a complete copy of Daniel was standing near him, he noticed instead his eyes were even brighter blue, short brown fur was covering his hands and feet. His hands and feet carried long sharp claws. It reminded him of a very incomplete werewolf minus the ears, "At least the face doesn't really change," he said.

"It did slightly, look the teeth are sharper, and the fangs are longer," Ialdir said pointing towards the copies face.

"At least the face isn't all deformed I meant," he said.

"Is that so, I'll make a record of that remark in case another traveler says the same thing," Ialdir said

"So what's next," he asked as he looked towards Ialdir.

"You can either select your attributes now or your bonus three traits," Ialdir said.

"Ok, let's do traits than, anything important I should know," he asked.

"If it is a recommendation, I recommend you select an elemental mana affinity, the option will not appear again in the traits menu, it is extremely difficult to obtain a mana element after birth and most races are specifically born with an element or none at all," Ialdir said.

"So there are traits that are limited to avatar creation only," he said.

"Yes, they are traits specifically received at birth, which make them unique traits, a simple example would be toxic blood or troll's blood, half-breed, the names are pretty self-explanatory too," Ialdir.

"Thanks, can you show me the traits related directly to mana then," he said, A new menu appeared as he asked.

~Mana Absorption

Your body will unnaturally absorb and convert 15% of a damaging spell's mana, replenishing your own. If mana capacity is exceeded excess raw mana will damage you. |Cost 1 TP - Body Alteration|

~Natural Meditation~

Increases your natural mana regeneration to 5 mana per 13 seconds per point of wisdom. Average mana regeneration is 5 mana per 15 seconds. Cost 1 TP

~Elemental Mana~

Adds one elemental property to ones mana per point.

Elements have opposing elements, only extremely rare species or races have a chance of obtaining an opposing element later in life.

-Fire- Cost 1 TP

-Water- Cost 1 TP

-Earth- Cost 1 TP

-Wind- Cost 1 TP

-Light- Cost 1 TP

-Dark- Cost 1 TP

-Life- Cost 1 TP

-Death- Cost 1 TP

~Mana Sickness Resistance~

Increases resistance and reduces the effects of excess raw mana by 30/50/75/100% per point invested. Cost 1 TP

"These are the traits currently available to you and your race, more will unlock as you grow stronger, you will receive a trait point every 10 levels, costs of traits may increase with points invested," Ialdir said.

"Thanks," he said, he was currently looking at his options. "Can you explain what exactly each element does," he asked.

"I'm afraid I can't, elemental spells are based more directly on the casters and the directly associated element. Earth will allow you to introduce earth element properties to your spells or perhaps create new spells entirely," Ialdir said.

"Which elements can actually heal?" he asked.

"Life, Light, Water, and even the neutral element-less raw mana can heal," Ialdir replied.

"Thanks, that makes my choices pretty easy, I'll go Earth, and Life, I plan to use spellcasting more defensively," he said.

"That is, of course, one way to use the elements," Ialdir replied.

Daniel selected Life element first suddenly the window changed.

~Elemental Mana~

Adds one elemental property to ones mana per point.

Elements have opposing elements, only extremely rare species or races have a chance of obtaining an opposing element later in life.

-Fire- Cost 1 TP

-Water- Cost 1 TP

-Earth- Cost 1 TP

-Wind- Cost 1 TP

-Light- Cost 1 TP

-Dark- Cost 1 TP

-Death- Cost 2 TP

He didn't expect the cost of Death element to increase by one TP, having polar opposite elements sounds cool though. But he knew how inefficient it could possibly be. He chose to spend his second TP on the Earth element as he planned. He was really hoping to be able to effect terrain or create walls or something to try and control the battlefield.

"You have one more trait point remaining," Ialdir said.

"Is there any special body alteration trait that affects Natural armor," he asked. Suddenly just as he has asked a new menu and trait popped up in front of him.

~Thick-Skinned~

Level 1

The user's skin and body are tougher than average. Changes the formula that determines Natural Armor Class from,

Before, Strength+Constitution/3 = Natural Armor Class

After, Strength+Constitution/2 = Natural Armor Class

Body Alteration - Cost 1 TP

"Thick-Skinned is a body alteration birth trait," Ialdir said.

"That is a pretty big trait, are body alteration traits all so powerful?" he said.

"Yes, they will help mold and define a person into a unique entity, many body alteration traits are not available to beastkin however and some are not compatible with other traits," Ialdir said.

"It didn't mention anything like that," he said.

"The beastkin use a different defining system, they have their bloodlines which help define them, they can gain more bonuses from their bloodline as they get more powerful," Ialdir said.

"So they only get more generalized body alterations then," he asked.

"Yes, the other races have unique body alterations specifically attached to their respective subraces as well, but they get fewer options of unique traits as they grow stronger, they can though gain unique traits through other means," Ialdir replied.

"You should really inform people of that information back when they are selecting a race," he said.

"I will inform the other servant's of your opinion and add this to the world's records," Ialdir replied.

Daniel selected the Thick-skinned as his third trait point. he heard the sound of a bell "Ding"

"You have 25 free points to spend, do you need me to explain the attributes," Ialdir asked from the side.

"Are you able to tell me how they actually affect my avatar?" he asked.

"Sure, Strength is pretty self-explanatory, it will affect your muscle strength, how hard you can hit, or how much you can carry and etc, Constitutions is the health and stamina of your body. Dexterity will affect the control of your motor functions and reflexes. Quickness is how fast you can move any part of your body. Intelligence will help boost your external mana pool and is an important component of mana manipulation. Wisdom is similar to intelligence except it will slightly increase your mana pool but will increase the rate at which you can recover your external mana. Charisma is how others may perceive you on your first encounter if you are not very sociable the attribute will not be able to help much. Last is Luck it is an attribute that cannot be increased or decreased through normal means and its effects are random and near impossible to detect, Do you need me to go into further details on any attributes," Ialdir said as he looked towards Daniel.

Just to make sure Daniel had to ask, "Yes, can you give me the attributes actual numbers when it comes to intelligence and Wisdom and its effect on mana,"

"Sure, Intelligence is 10 mana per 1 point, Wisdom is 3 mana per 1 point and 5 mana per 15 seconds naturally regenerated, you do not gain base mana or health when you level it is based on your attributes," Ialdir replied.

"Thanks, what are growth points and how do I use them," he asked.

"Just so you understand, you will gain 2 Free Attribute points per level to allocate anywhere except in Luck, you will also gain 5 Growth Points. Growth Points are different from regular attribute points, you must be doing an activity or something associated with the attribute to actually utilize them the reason they exist as such is to prevent creatures from growing indefinitely from just trivial repetition, they are also slower to raise the higher an attribute gets, a simple example would be to actually simply work out, you will naturally gain strength and constitution through this method, you can also lock and unlock different attributes to make sure you don't spend growth points on unwanted attributes," Ialdir said.

"Thanks," he said. Thinking about it he wasn't too sure on how much Dexterity and Quickness will affect him or play in the early levels it might be better build his other stats. He decided to leave his Dexterity and Quickness as they were and level them with growth points. For the start, he decided on getting his attributes that will affect his potential skills more higher.

"Do you wish to finalize your current status and move directly into the Tutorial," Ialdir asked.

"Yes," he replied.

"Congratulations then," Ialdir said.

Suddenly glowing prismatic lights began swirling around Daniel suddenly, they rushed into him. Before he realized it he felt completely different.

~Skill Acquired~

Mana Manipulation - Congratulations - All things have mana in Evotania, you have just learned to use yours like a baby taking his first breath.

Effects - You can now move and control your mana, Mana consumption increased by 100% when casting spells.

Current Skill Level: Beginner Rank 1

He could suddenly see a small status hub in the corner of his eye displaying his health, stamina, and mana. It followed his eyes as he moved them, it was always in the same corner.

"Your Traveler bracer's full features should be once again available," Ialdir said.

Daniel checked opening up the Evotania menu.

"The inventory, how exactly does it work," he asked.

"Travelers are given a special space to store items, the space is very limited, anything else you must manually carry by hand. Things inside your traveler's inventory will not drop on death at all if it has been in the inventory longer than five minutes, your personal belongings on you may drop if you are unlucky enough to die, such as armor or bags, you can eventually bind magical equipment to your mana by reserving mana it is a technique you will have to learn in the future, such equipment that is bound will not drop on death," Ialdir said.

"Thanks, I got a skill called mana manipulation what exactly does that mean," he asked.

"You should've felt different when you received it, try closing your eyes and focusing, you should feel a weird strange tingling sensation around you," Ialdir said.

"I'm already feeling that, what is it," he asked before closing his eyes.

"That's mana, focus hard on that sensation, you should begin to feel your own mana, try moving it or stretching it," Ialdir said.

He closed his eyes trying to get the feeling, it felt strange almost like a new muscle.

"Good, I can see it shaking, keep at it focus on trying to pull it to a specific area closer towards you, try onto your hand or something," Ialdir said.

Following his instructions he tried to will the new muscle to his palm, he kept at it and the more he interacted with it the better and easier feeling it became. He wasn't even aware of how much time passed or the notifications that popped up as he was playing with it. Opening his eyes when he was satisfied that he could move it or stretch the invisible muscle around him.

Congratulations Mana Manipulation leveled up a rank!

Congratulations Mana Manipulation leveled up a rank!

Congratulations Mana Manipulation leveled up a rank!

"Congratulations, you are getting the hang of it you can reach Novice rank in the tutorial if you practice hard enough," Ialdir

"So how do I actually cast a spell though," he asked, he didn't understand it.

"For each caster, it will be slightly different, but I'll now show you, we will start with a simple elementless spell," Ialdir held his palm up and a transparent prismatic ball appeared on his hand. Suddenly the ball rose from his palm and flew off slamming into the ground. It suddenly exploded as it crashed into the ground, Daniel noticed that the ground appeared completely fine even after what appeared to be a small explosion of glass shrapnel.
