Belialthorn faced her, he knew this day would come and once it's here now he knew he couldn't go with his first option, which was to kill her.
"What do you mean?" Belialthorn asked her cautiously.
"You are too powerful for a level 5 Carter....."
"Level 6." Belialthorn interrupted her. He had almost forgotten the feeling of leveling up when he killed those two assassins.
She gave him a look. "You are far too powerful for a level 6 Caster and from what I know, Casters can't use multiple types of arcanes. But I've seen you use fire, light, and shadow now. It was almost as if you are not a caster...." her eyes widened as they drew a conclusion on her own and she uttered in disbelief. "What's your class?"
Belialthorn raised his two hands. "Alright, you've got it but first let's get out of here."
They hurried away from the alleyway and into the streets where they soon joined the stream of people.
"I am a Sorcerer." Belialthorn lied. "As you know the Sorcerer class is very rare and that allows me to be able to cast different types of arcane. But my real thing is Fire."
Rota gave him an awed look and she saw him in a new light. That must explain his ever-present confidence and his arrogance during any fight. "But that didn't explain why you are a level 6 Caster."
Belialthorn shrugged and puffed up. "I am something of a genius and I have duel class."
This time, Rota stumbled. If Sorcerers were rare, having more than one class was considered one in a million occurrence. "But that's great! Why are you trying to hide it?"
"What do you think would happen if the Holy Church or Hunter's Association found out? They will all want a chance to tear into me and the Nobles would also won't leave me alone." He said.
Rota nodded and smiled. "That's true. Even without knowing that you already caused some trouble." She raised her brows. "So that's why you are powerful and using different spells and arcana."
"Yes. Casters are limited to the skill they were given and can only use spells relating to those skills. We Sorcerers are flexible and we can work with any spells. We have initiated connections to mana which made any of our spells more powerful." Technically Belialthorn wasn't lying. The Noble Demon class was like that...with added benefits.
"That should make Sorcerer powerful then, learning lots of different arcana," Rota said.
"No. While learning different spells is good, mastering one type of arcane is the best option." Belialthorn said. He had chosen the fire as his arcane, mainly because it was easy to learn but also because that was what was given to him in the Demon City. Besides, his Bloodline Trait [Lowly] made it impossible to learn some powerful and advanced arcane.
"But why?"
"Learning spells is difficult enough even with our initiate connections with mana. Learning different types of arcane is well and good but you won't ever master any arcane like that." Belialthorn said.
Rota deflated. "Isn't it like caster then? Since they have only only mastered one type of arcane."
"How can you compare Caster to Sorcerer? Can a caster use shadow as I did earlier even though my specialty is fire? You see those basic spells give you an edge in fighting." Belialthorn continued. "And our spells are more powerful because of our connection with mana."
How powerful was he then? Rota thought and clenched her fist. She had been useless then and waited for death.
"Do you know who sent the assassins?" Rota asked, changing the subject.
"I do in fact." Belialthorn felt someone brushed against his awareness and he focused his attention on it but it was already gone. He had sent his mind in a bubble around them earlier, in case anyone trailed them.
Seems they were keeping eyes on us, Belialthorn thought.
"You do? Tell me." Rota demanded. This time she would not freeze and turn into a whimpering mess.
Belialthorn looked at her and said with a flat voice. "I appreciate your effort but you are simply too weak to face such foes."
"And you? Can you fight them?" Rota challenged.
He couldn't. It would be a gross underestimation to think he could handle a lot of high-level Hunters, even in his Demon form because he certainly couldn't do it in his human one.
"I'll do some damage." He muttered. If only he didn't have that Bloodline Trait that made it impossible for him to use devastating arcane. He was sure one of the other princes could cause real chaos here.
"Let me fight with you, I'm weak and powerless but I won't hold you back." She would do it, Rota willed her heart. This time she would fight.
It struck Belialthorn as a funny thing. Here was a weak human pledging to fight beside him, when back in the Demon City even normal Demons would rather spit on him.
"You don't even know the enemy and I said nothing about fighting." He smiled. They were getting closer to their inn now and the stream of people had lessened.
"What? Won't we fight the people who sent assassins against us? At least tell me we are reporting it!" Rota snapped.
Belialthorn touched her shoulder to slow her down as the inn came into view. Something was wrong, the innkeeper and the servant were outside, their face a mixture of annoyance and fear.
"It might be impossible to report it," Thorn spoke over her. "The Holy Church sent the assassins and there was no witness."
Belialthorn carefully folded his awareness back and started weaving one of the invisible defensive spells he knew around them both.
Rota felt the tingling of mana and looked at him in surprise, both at the revelation and him casting spells on her. "What? Why would they do something like that..."
"Shhhhhh," They were close enough to read the worried lines around the innkeeper's mouth. "Just trust me and let me handle the conversation inside."
"What conversation?" Rota asked, baffled but they already reached the inn.
"Good evening, Master Thorn and Miss Rota." The innkeeper's lantern shook as he bowed to them.
"Why are you outside?" Thorn cut straight to the matter at hand.
"Well....em.... you have a guest." The innkeeper's mouth showed his displeasure at being sent out of his building but Belialthorn had already guessed it must be a guest he couldn't refuse.
"I get it, thank you." Belialthorn began moving to the door when he paused. "Rota, give them some coins to find a place to stay till we are done inside."
He tried to get the feel of those inside but they must be cloaking themselves somehow. All he knew was that there were three people inside.
Rota joined him at the door when she had done as he commanded and sent the innkeeper and the servant away.
She turned to Belialthorn and said. "I don't understand."
Belialthorn smiled. "Let's find out together then."
He opened the door.
