What is the purpose of human life? Why we were created? Is there a meaning behind our existence?
Everyone must have been asked one of these questions at some point in their lives, and many would have gotten some kind of noble answer like -
'To live kindly' or 'To give our life a greater meaning' etc.
When Theo was 16 years old, he stumbled upon the same question, and to satiate his curiosity he asked around
- "Dad, why were we born ? Do we need to achieve something ?"
But with each different individual, he was answered differently. He even got scolded sometimes for asking meaningless philosophical questions, which did not contribute to his academic studies.
Why were the most important questions related to our existence itself deemed meaningless and unnecessary?
The answer was simple, because it was easier to be ignorant than to chase something that provided no money. So Theo grew up being ignorant. He buried those questions deep inside his head, extinguishing the flames of his curiosity and moved on in his life.
Like many other people, Theo in his late 20s, lived his life cheerfully. He was an average looking guy who had a well paying job and very supportive parents. Over an all, he was satisfied with his life and couldn't ask for more. But, as we all know, life always takes an unexpected turn when we least expect it.
Which remind me of a famous saying of old seers. They used to say that -
'Our fate was decided even before our birth, and no matter how a person lived his life and made his decisions, there will come a day when the shackles of fate will tighten around him. In that very moment, the ultimate purpose of his life will be revealed to him by the universe itself, and he will seek it even at the cost of his life.'
And that day soon came for Theo when he was celebrating a traditional festival with his family in his house. It was a happy occasion where everyone was seen smiling and laughing, houses were decorated with colorful lights, everyone wore traditional dresses and were enjoying the evening.
- "Theo, go and attend the guests . . oh! and do serve them snacks."
- "Mom, relax. Look, dad is already there."
Theo was upstairs watching the guests, his friends and family member enjoying the evening in a big hall below him. After being left alone by his worried mother, he took a moment to capture the happy faces of his loved ones, but something strange happened.
While it's natural to feel happy when we see our loved ones smiling and enjoying themselves, Theo couldn't feel the same. That scene felt repetitive to him, it was like hearing a same joke thousandth time or throwing a house warming party daily.
As he continued to watch everyone, a chill crept up to his heart, as if someone were pouring cold water on his warm feelings. His emotions were slowly dwindling and his mind was going blank.
Finally, when his thoughts became stagnant, he felt detached from his surroundings. In that moment, his senses became more clear and his awareness grew further. The sudden burst in his abilities made it seem like time had slowed down.
Theo's demeanour shifted from human to unknown being with an aura of omnipotence. His face became expressionless, and his gaze bore indifference as he observed the crowd below him, which appeared to be moving in slow motion.
The crowd felt like a group of strangers to Theo. Their talking and laughing were just noises, and even their expressions seemed foreign to him.
For Theo, it was the day of revelation which came like a storm in his smooth sailing life.
Unbeknownst to him, he just went through a spiritual awakening which marked his first step into the spiritual world.
A weird feeling bloomed within Theo as he observed everyone. He felt as if his life up to this point had been a charade for everyone else, including himself. It was a feeling which clearly told him that whatever he was, he was not himself, like he was pretending to be someone else. It led him to question his existence.
It was a happy occasion but Theo felt hollowed, deprived of emotions. Then, what was buried long ago surfaced again as he asked himself in an inaudible voice
"What is the meaning of my life? For this? Is this what I was born for?"
But Theo didn't get any answer. His entire life felt like a lie, and those questions took something away from him that day—the reason to keep living. As the time flew by, those questions robbed his tranquilly, and later, he lost every desire and ambition.
For years, only for the sake of living, he maintained his daily job.
After work, he always stayed shut in his house, spending most of his time sleeping to escape from his emptiness.
As everything felt pointless to him, Theo became distant with his family and friends. He refused to live like a normal human who always chases their desires and acts upon emotions, but he himself didn't know the right way to live.
For years, he didn't live but simply existed, drifting with time like a soulless being. And not long after, he received some unexpected news
- " I'm very sorry Theo, its a last stage cancer. We need to run some more tests but I advice you to get the surgery as soon as possible, that way you'll have a year but without it, you'll have 5 to 6 months . . . "
The doctor was explaining the procedures, but Theo remained unconcerned; many things had already died within him, and now it was just time for his flesh. That was why, instead of sorrow and pity, his lifeless eyes now had a glimmer of relief.
The past few years made him feel so hollow that the news of his impending death was like salvation for him. So, Theo refused the surgical treatment and ran away from everything. He shifted in a remote location to die peacefully.
He isolated himself in his home and spent most of his time meditating and reading books, particularly about ancient beliefs and mythology, in search of a remedy to his emptiness. But even if the answers we are looking for are right in front of us, the fog of preconceptions makes it difficult to perceive them.
So the first thing Theo did was to rewire his preconceptions which resultant in changing his belief system. With approaching death, he got many spiritual enlightenment which developed some extraordinary capabilities in him.
Few of those were like - he gained complete control over his emotions, his instincts grew on supernatural scale, his intuitions got more accurate etc. With his newfound wisdom, Theo realised the true potential of humans, allowing him to realise his true purpose.
- " How Ironic? I found something to chase after at the finish line. "
Thought Theo as he knew that his goal was unachievable in the due time. Realising this, he surrendered and accepted his final days peacefully; after all, no one can outwit death.
His suffering got rough along with time: severe headaches, blood vomiting, and painful nights; medicine was working but it was not enough.
He had the appearance of a bald mummy, with a skinny body that traced his bones and dark circles under his lifeless eyes. His condition was the worst; some of his memories were already turned into blank pages, and he had forgotten the faces of his parents.
One night under the full moon, Theo was crossing a bridge wearing a hoodie, walking back to his house after shopping, when a cold breeze washed over his face.
He came to a halt and leaned against the guard railing to look into the river, where he discovered a brilliant reflection of the moon and stars.
Once in a while, the skies make themselves clear at night, and if you live in a place where the light pollution is minimal, then consider yourself the luckiest person, for you can see a night full of stars, and you can truly say that the stars are countless.
After learning many things, Theo stopped believing in coincidences. Instead, he believed that everything had a reason, but that our ignorance prevented us from seeing it. Looking at the moon's reflection reminded him of a question, and he asked it quietly.
- " Is it possible that existence is our exile and nothingness is our home ?"
And suddenly, a severe headache hit him, and his pain intensified quickly. He grabbed his head and in the next moment, his world turned upside down. A car ran through him, destroying the guard rails, both of them fell off from the bridge.
Splash~!
Drowning in the river made it seem like time had slowed down. The radiance of the full moon penetrated through the water, giving false hope of life, and Theo saw his thick blood fade like ink. His body begged for one breath, wanting to live, but Theo knew that one breath would be his last.
Thought of surviving and death scared him equally. He was scared—scared to close his eyes, scared that his next life would be the same.
He didn't want to live a life chasing petty desires and appeasing his emotions; it scared him that this life and death cycle would continue for eternity.
Darkness started to envelop Theo's vision, and in the midst of all the pain and coldness, he heard someone's humming. A soft, kind voice, like a mother singing a lullaby to her child.
[Humming Reference: Memories of Mother]
It was so obvious that he couldn't deny it by blaming it on his imagination. It was not his imagination, and he was not in a position to argue, so he just surrendered himself to that melody.
That unknown voice was filled with a mother's affection for her child.
Theo felt warmth inside his chest, and it consoled his worried heart. He felt like the voice was telling him that it's okay, that everything will be okay, that he should sleep without worrying, and it broke him into tears.
Every tear told of his fears, and as they were washed away in the darkness, they robbed his body of the warmth it once possessed.
And his conscious slipped away.
Theo died as the flames in his heart extinguished . . . .
And yet
Gasp . . . haah. . . . hah
