Chapter 47

Michael's entire body went rigid. His eyes snapped open, and he sat up straight, the tension rolling off him in waves. "What did he want?"

I swallowed hard, feeling the weight of my words before i spoke. "He's... he's angry. About the baby. About us." I hesitated, searching for the right words. "He thinks I've been trying to erase him from the picture. He said... he said this isn't over."

Michael's expression darkened, and his jaw tightened. "Of course he did." His voice was tight, controlled, but i could see the fury simmering just beneath the surface.

"He's trying to scare you," Michael said after a long moment. "That's what he does. He knows exactly how to push people's buttons, how to get under their skin."

I nodded, though my heart still pounded in my chest. "I know. But it's not just about the baby, Michael. He said something about power. About control."
