The Slayer's Story

Being a dragon slayer's daughter never would be easy. I knew that. But I didn't expect to have to heal a dragon in the middle of the Magical Forest.

"Just stay still, don't move," I whispered gently, lying the girl down on a nest of ferns. If only there was a cabin or some place to stay in this forest. This was also my first time in the forest, so I knew nothing about it, and I certainly didn't know how to heal dragon girls.

"It... it hurts!" she moaned, her body beginning to spasm.

I felt panic rise in my heart. I had no idea how to treat humans, let alone dragons! I wasn't a doctor. "Uhm... stay calm!" I advised.

"Help me!" she shouted, and I flinched at the volume of her voice. Were dragons always this loud?

"Just stay calm," I repeated, trying to keep my voice from shaking.

What do I do, what do I do?

"There's a cabin on the far left of the forest! Go there!" she groaned as another spasm took place.

Without thinking, I carried her and broke into a run to get to the left of the forest. I wasn't sure if I'd see it, what if I missed it? But I didn't care, I just kept on running, and it was surprising that I didn't trip with all the roots and bracken on the ground.

Soon the trees started to clear, and in the fading moonlight I caught sight of a wooden cabin. It was quite large, much larger than the ones I was used to seeing. I hurried towards the entrance and slowed my pace as I walked inside. It was dusty like it hadn't been used for a while, but it would do. I flicked a switch and yellow light glowed.

Inside the cabin it was musty, spiderwebs hung around in corners, and it was overall empty except for an old king-sized bed.

I hurried to the bed and lied her down carefully, tucking the dirty covers over her in hopes of keeping her warm. "What do I do?" I whispered. She had known where the cabin was, maybe she would know what would help her.

"Under the bed... there's... there's a container filled with medicine...." she broke off as another spasm took place, and the sheets were stained with blood already.

I reached under the bed and slid out a small box. I lifted the lid quickly and saw about twenty different containers that held pills. "Which one?" I called up to the girl.

"Any one!" she yelled in pain, and I grabbed the first box of pills that I saw and opened it, not caring about how many pills to give her. I just dumped a handful in my palm and shoved it into her mouth.

"Are you okay?" I asked, ready to reach into the container for more pills.

Suddenly a blue blinding light took place, similar to the ones you see when dragons transform. I used my arm to shield my eyes. Moments later the blue light faded, and I looked on in shock to see that all the bleeding had stopped, the wound was no more than a gash of dried blood.

"What...?" I couldn't even find words anymore. Transforming dragons was one thing, but it was another to see pills do this sort of thing.

"Who...who are you?" the girl asked, her bright golden eyes burning my skin.

"I'm Kylie," I replied. "Who are you?"

"I'm... Kira," she answered, her eyes flitting towards the ceiling as if she was looking at something I couldn't see.

"Kira?" I heard about Kira. She was the dragon princess. If I could trick her and bring her back to the dragon slayers, I would not only get paid millions in gold, but I would also finally get a praise from my father.

"Yes," she continued staring up at the ceiling. "I know about you, Kylie."

"You know about me?" my heart lurched. Dragons weren't stupid. If she figured out I was the daughter of a dragon slayer, she would figure out my plan and take the chance to escape before I could do anything.

"I do. I heard about your father," she said. "Ryker Drakin. He used to be best friends with my father."

I tilted my head. "What do you know about my father?"

"Everything."

It was a dark night, Ryker had just barely escaped his room unseen. He walked through the forest, making his way towards the moonlit clearing where he always met with Vlad Virkzon.

"Vlad!" he shouted as he ran into the clearing, and jumped onto Vlad's back in a playful way. "Vlad, where were you yesterday?"

Vlad shrugged him off and turned to face him. "I couldn't come yesterday, something happened." His eyes darkened, like he had something he didn't want to say.

"What is it?"

"It's about Karol, I... I didn't want to do it, but they made me, Ryker."

"What happened?" Ryker asked, panic flaring in his chest.

"They made me do it with Karol, and well... she's pregnant."

Ryker dropped onto his knees like he had just swallowed a stone. "Why would you do this?" he asked, his voice trembling.

"I had no choice. If I didn't do it they would lock me inside, and I wouldn't be able to see you anymore," Vlad explained.

"Well you're not going to see me anymore! You're going to be a father while I sit here and be nothing to you," Ryker spat, standing back up to face Vlad.

"That's not true!" Vlad shouted. "I love you, Ryker. Forever."

"I know you do. But we can't be together anymore while you have children." Ryker wanted them to keep seeing each other. Ryker wanted them to love each other. Ryker wanted them to live together forever and have children of their own. But that was too good to be true.

"Ryker... I'm so sorry," Vlad said. He took a step forward and reached his hand out to touch Ryker, but he flinched away.

"No, Vlad. I'm sorry. We should never have met," Ryker forced the words out of his mouth. Then he turned, to the forest, never looking back.

"What? That's not true!" I gasped in disbelief.

"Yeah it is," Kira argued, even though she was smiling.

"Did your father tell you this?" I asked curiously.

"No," Kira narrowed her eyes. "I was snooping around in his office, and I found an old diary. I thought it was empty, so I took it to use it myself. I opened it and found that it had my father's writing all over it, and that's how I found out about it."

"I can't believe it," I commented. My father had always been a strong, brave man. The fact that he had ever fallen in love with a boy was just unbelievable. "Do you think it's true?"

"I don't know. It might be just a story that he wrote, but it sounds pretty real," Kira said.

"When they were young were the slayers and dragons still at war?" I wondered aloud.

"I don't think so, or else they would've made a bigger deal about being together," Kira replied, turning on her side and facing away from me.

Even though we hadn't talked that much, and all she really did was tell me a story that might not even be true, it seemed as if we've known each other for a long time already. While she told the story we would both make a silly remark and laugh together. It seemed natural.

"Are you going to sleep?" I asked.

"Mhm."

"That's not fair! Where do I sleep?" I queried.

"Sleep next to me, these covers are dirty and aren't keeping me very warm." Kira patted on the space next to her, and I slowly tucked myself in next to her.

"Are you cold?"

Kira nodded and moved closer to me, her head resting on my chest. I gently wrapped my arms around her and felt a rush of warmth. Was this how my father felt about Kira's father? Did they feel like they could be together forever?

"Kylie." I glanced down at Kira and stared into those golden eyes. It looked like electricity was surging through them. No, not electricity. Energy.

"Kira." The words were barely out of my mouth before she reached up to touch her lips to mine.

The kiss surprised me, but I didn't move away. I started to fall deeper in this sensational feeling, but before I knew it, the kiss had ended just as quickly as it began. I wanted more, but I was stunned into place.

"Didn't expect that," Kira smirked, and then rested her head back into a comfortable position, closing those bright golden eyes, and I watched as her breathing slowed as she fell to sleep.

This must be how Ryker and Vlad felt. Feeling like nothing could stop them from being together, feeling like the only thing that mattered to them was each other. This must be what it feels like to love someone.
