Dr. Gerhard just walked in and I have been trying to avoid him all day. But it looks like I have lost that battle. I do not know how it let him down easy. I walk with him to the cafeteria and on my way there I walk past Jen. This is my chance to get out of this lunch date. I make sure that Jen sees me and then I mouth to her.
"Save me"
Luckily for me she gets me and I do not even have to say a word and she will still understand me. But she only smiles at me and I have to find a table with Dr. Gerhard.
"So, did your patient make it through the night?"
"Yes, thank God he did. I do not like to tell the families that their loved one did not make it"
"I know what you are talking about. I had to tell someone this morning"
I feel his pain, it is never a good feeling to do something like that. I do not, not like him but there is just no spark between us and he definitely wants more than what I want to give. I wish that we could just stay friends but once there are words spoken regarding feeling between us, we will not be able to be friends.
"I am really sorry you had to do that"
"That is okay, I guess that is the job right? So I was wondering-"
Thank god my pager goes off. It is a 911 for Mr. Hendricks.
"I am so sorry but I have to go"
"Oh no, I understand. We can just-"
I run out of the cafeteria and do not allow him to finish his sentence. I know what he is going to ask me. He is going to ask me on a proper date and I just can not let him say those words. I come running to his room and Mr. Hendricks is sleeping soundly in his bed. I turn around and Jen is standing behind the counter smiling at me. Then I realize what she did.
"Oh! Thank you, thank you, thank you!"
"You owe me big time, doctor"
"I do, I do!"
We laugh a little bit and then she continues her rounds. I make use of the opportunity and do my rounds as well. As I am busy finishing my rounds I decide that I need a break from the hospital and I also know that Dr. Gerhard is working this weekend. I took the liberty of checking his schedule.
"Jen, I am taking this weekend off. I will ask Dr. Johnson to look after my patients"
"Yes, doctor. Are going on vacation?"
"I guess, I am"
Jen then stares at me in unbelief.
LUKE POV
After I gathered all my strength again I went back to the office and organize to take the weekend off. That is the one benefit of being the boss. I can take off at any time I want. I already called my grandpa and his ecstatic that I am coming for a visit. I decide to take the Jeep down there cause roads are not big in that town.
As I drive down there and I feel the wind and sun on my face I know I made the right decision. I put my favorite music on and then it does not take long for me to get there. I am greeted by the welcoming board that says the population is now standing at 14567. I smile because I know that nothing has changed since the last I graduated high school from here. Still the same old town.
I stop my Jeep at a gas station. I throw some gas into my Jeep and a man approaches me.
"Hi, Luke, how ya doin? Long time no see?"
I can see that this man is working at the gas station and he acts as if he knows me from somewhere but for the life of me, I do not know who this man is.
"I am doing well, thanks...uh?"
"It is Tony, you know? Tony from maths?"
"Tony? The pony Tony??"
"Yeah that is me alright"
Suddenly everything about high school comes back to me. I remember how I was the big shot jock and that a career was laid out for me. I had a future and I was like a hero to everyone in this town. Tony here, always wanted to join us but, let us just say that his body could not keep up with the demands and it seems that he still would not be able to keep up.
"Wow, how are you doing these days? You running this joint?"
"Yes, this here is all mine. I see the city is treating you well?"
"Yeah, well a few good investments and one thing let to the other"
"So what are you doin here with our common folk?"
I chuckle a bit at his statement as I do not see them as common folk. Actually, I see them more as peace of mind and rest for my soul.
"I do not think you are common folk, Tony. I am here to visit my grandpa"
"Ahh, Old man Walters. Yeah he would be very happy"
"Yeah, speaking of, I really need to go now. It was nice catching up"
"Yeah, enjoy your visit. Oh and, maybe you should go and see Penny at the salon"
I do not know why I should go and see her. She will be the last person I want to see as she was always the girl that did not want to leave me alone. I get into my Jeep and make my way to my grandpa's house.
MIKAYLA POV
I am just about to get on the plane when I remember that I did not check on Mr. Hendricks. I am turning around and then I get a message from Jen.
"Do not worry about Mr. Hendricks. I will look after him"
It is like she knows me too well. She knows that I will find something to keep me in the city. I want to see my dad and brother but not the town or the people in the town. I was not the most popular girl in high school and that is memories I choose to leave behind. But then I turn around again and get on the plane to nowhere.
