CHAPTER 8

"If it was not an accident, then who would have done this?" Scarlett thought out loud.

It was really a question to be asked.

"Mum and dad had big hearts. Too big for their own good. So how... Who would want them dead?"

"Having a big heart is not enough to prevent people from hating you, Scarlett. People may just hate you for that," Kayden stated.

"Yes but not enough hate to prompt one unto causing a fire of death in our home, Scarlett countered.

She was not saying he is wrong. But that is not enough reason to want to kill someone. Just because they have big hearts.

"I don't know, Scarlett. The world is not the same as before. People tend to do crazy stuff nowadays," Kayden slid his hand into his hair.

"Kayden we can't let this go," Scarlett sobbed. "Mum and dad did not deserve to be killed just like that. For no reason."

"I know. That's why I said leave it to me. I will handle this with the police," Kayden hugged her as he said.

He calmly rubbed up and down her back in a soothing manner. But his mind had wandered off and whatever he was thinking, made his emerald green eyes darken.

**Flashback Ends**

Scarlett sighed as her mind came back to the present. She was not going to let her brother do all the stuff- both finding the person that murdered her parents and getting revenge.

She is going to get involved whether he or anyone else likes it or not.

While Scarlett thought of how to find the person who planned the fire, she failed to notice the woman walking towards her.

It was until the lady spoke that she looked away from her parents' caskets. Clothed in an odd colour of red- from top to bottom, was a wan Scarlett is familiar with.

"Oh, my poor little sister. Gone too soon and leaving her kids behind," the woman dramatically wiped her tears and sniffed.

Scarlett rolled her eyes at the woman and turned her eyes away. She did not bother hiding her dissatisfaction with the woman's presence.

Marceline Anderson, elder sister of Elena Anderson or rather, Elena Davis, Scarlett and Kayden's mother.

But unlike their mother, Elena, Marceline was a jealous b*tch of a sibling. It was no new news that Marceline hated their mother.

The reason was still unclear to Scarlett. But she figured from one of the sisters' discussions that their parents held Elena in high regard than Marceline, who is the eldest.

So to make up for it, Marceline will always criticise whatever Elena does. Every decision she makes, there was always Marceline to speak badly about it.

Whether good or bad.

However, Elena was never bothered by it so she made sure her children were not bothered as well as her husband.

"Oh Scarlett, my little niece. Don't fret now. Your aunty is here to take good care of you," Marceline spoke as she reached out for Scarlett.

But the latter took two steps away from her. Disgust was written all over her face and a glare shot directly at the older lady.

"Don't touch me," Scarlett spat with hostility.

Just then, Kayden came back from directing the guests to their new apartment where the reception funeral would be held.

He did not expect to see their aunt but he was not shocked either. Instead, his face held no emotions whatsoever.

"What are you doing here?" Kayden asked on a calmer note as wrapped one of his hands around his sister.

"What do you mean what am I doing here? My dear sister has passed unto the afterlife. It is only natural and respectful that I attend her funeral," Marceline stated matter-of-factly.

"However, my nephew and niece did not invite me to pay my respect," she sighed sadly. Then her face lit up again. "But never mind. I at least made it to put a flower on her grave and for the reception."

"Don't you dare put that lousy flower on the grave. Mother hates ivies and you know it perfectly well," Scarlett snapped.

"Oh, dear. It does not matter now that she is dead. Or does it?"

"Alright, that's enough. Our mother may be dead but you don't get to disrespect her like that. I suggest you keep the flowers for your vase at home if you have any," Kayden said.

"Let's go, Scarlett," he took her with him leaving Marceline alone.

The latter scoffed a chuckle.

"Your children sure have sharp tongues, Elena. Just like you. But you can't run your tongue now. At least not in the land of the living," Marceline smirked at Elena's smiling picture.

She humphed and tossed the flower unto the floor, away from the grave before walking away. There was still a reception and sge would not miss that chance to see the lowly place the Davis' children now lived.

~At their new home~

The apartment was packed with people who came to give their condolences and sympathise with the children of their late friends and co-workers.

Some sat and some stood. And some would offer food, drinks and pies to Scarlet and Kayden as if to support them now that they had no parents.

The two were grateful even if they did not need all those things. Soon, those who wanted to say a thing or two about Mr and Mrs Davis began speaking- in turns.

And they all had good things to say about the couple. Even funny things were said. Some went as far as telling how the couple helped them and whatnot.

It brought tears and smiles to the very everyone. Until a certain lady in red decided to take the stage and give a speech under the spotlight.

Scarlett's smile dropped as a frown made its' way unto her face.

"How dare she come here?" Scarlett muttered under her breath.

"Relax. If she does anything rash, I will have her leave," Kayden assured her.

"Not if I throw her out myself."
