CHAPTER 22

"Take her away from here," the receptionist ordered.

Just as the men were about to take Scarlett out, a familiar domineering voice sounded loud and clear.

"What's going on here?"

All attention was soon directed to the source of the voice.

"It's the boss."

"The CEO is here."

"And what do you two think you are doing? Unhand her this instant," Arsenio commanded.

Scarlett sighed in relief upon hearing that. She pulled her arms away from the loosened grip of the security men and adjusted her clothes.

"B-Boss, we..." The two had no words to say as they met with the glare shot at them from Arsenio.

"Ms Davis, what happened?" Ryker asked as he approached her.

"I–"

"Assistant Jones, this woman–"

"I asked Ms Davis not you," Ryker snapped a bit. Then he sighed and turned back to Scarlett hinting at her to speak.

"I did as you told me to. Once you get into the building, go straight to the receptionist and ask for directions to Mr Stone's office. Then wait for us to arrive at the waiting area," Scarlett repeated his words.

"Yes. So what's the commotion about?"

"Miss Receptionist here refused to help me with that. Instead, she accused me of being a money leech coming for Mr Stone, a liar and a scammer. She even confiscated the letter of employment you gave me in the name of it being fabricated. Then she called these men to take out," Scarlett reported the incident without an ounce of fear in her voice.

It was as if she was not in an embarrassing situation just a moment ago.

"Well, in my defence, Assistant Jones, her name was not in the register of the employees of the company. She might as well be like those loosed women who have come here claiming to be an acquaintance of our–"

"Silence!" Arsenio's voice echoed throughout the first floor.

The receptionist flinched and stepped back. She had incurred the wrath of the boss.

"Did you check the authenticity of the letter?"

"Boss, I–"

"Did you?"

"She didn't because she claimed to be able to discern lairs even from miles away," Scarlett repeated the receptionist's words.

"Imbecile," Arsenio cursed.

He was not bothered by the words he used on the receptionist. It's not as if she was bothered when she called his secretary names.

"How many minutes will it take for you to have called to confirm?" Arsenio asked but he was not even interested in what her answer would be.

"This should be the first and the last time this happens to my secretary, Ryker. You," he cast his eyes on Scarlett. "Come with me."

Scarlett shook her head at the receptionist before walking away with Arsenio. Seeing as they were gone, Ryker sighed and clapped.

"Alright, everyone. Get back to your stations and start your work for the day. Hurry off now. Chop chop."

The crowd dispersed as there was nothing more to see there. Probably just the receptionist getting scolded by the CEO's assistant.

"Ms Clinton, I warned you about your assumptions, didn't I? This is your second strike already," Ryker turned to address the receptionist.

"But Assistant Jones, she was not on the register and I was not informed," she defended.

"I sent you an email last week about this," Ryker raised his brows.

"I–"

"Ms Clinton, not every beautiful lady that walks through those doors is a money leech. Besides, there have been only two women here that came to cause trouble like that. And they were not dressed as professionally as Ms Davis. She even showed you the letter. So what went wrong?" He asked.

The receptionist grew silent as she had nothing reasonable to come up with. And spouting nonsense might just send her packing.

"Don't tell me you got jealous or intimidated by Ms Davis or are you?"

When Ms Clinton's face turned a shade of red, Ryker sighed and shook his head.

"Tsk tsk tsk," he clicked his tongue several times. "Ms Clinton, the CEO is up there and you are down here... He barely comes into the company through this entrance and doesn't even bat an eye at you female fangirl employees," Ryker made sure to sink those words into her head.

"I've lectured you enough. You will hear from the Human Resources Department soon," Ryker ended his little speech and walked away.

"Assistant Jones, am I getting fired? Please, I promise it won't happen again," she ran after him, begging.

"Wait for any other information from HR and please... Be sensible from now on," Ryker advised before stepping into the elevator.

~At the top floor of the company's building~

Arsenio showed Scarlett to the office she would occupy during her time in the company. Then he went straight to his office saying, Ryker would show her around and inform her of what to do.

Soon enough, Ryker came in after knocking. He offered her an apologetic smile as she made his way further inside.

"I'm sorry about the inconvenience on the first floor."

"Oh, it's fine, I guess," Scarlett returned the smile.

"Really?" Ryker was surprised. If it were to be others they would have been throwing a feat by now.

"Yeah. It's just that this was definitely not how I pictured my very first day at work to be. This will remain evergreen in my memory," Scarlett said.

"Apologies again."

"It's fine Besides she was only doing her job. But she went a bit overboard. I almost lost my cool," Scatletr said with a chuckle.

"That would have been an interesting scene to witness. Anyway, I will have your letter of employment brought back to you. For now, a quick tour of the company is what matters. We would not want you to get lost should in case you were sent on an errand, would we?" He teased a bit to lighten the air.

"Of course not. Asking for directions after this morning's incident will be too awkward for me," Scarlett agreed.

"Good. Now, shall we get started?" Ryker asked as he held the door open for her.

"Yes, we shall."
