Chapter 89

--- 4th of June 1897 ---

--- 3rd Person POV ---

--- Imperial City in Sooraj ---

Doctor Rizal immediately understood the concerns and hesitations etched on the faces of the Crown Prince and his courtiers. This was not new to him; ever since he proposed the idea of having a woman of European descent teach sciences to the Crown Prince of Butuan, he had faced scrutiny and harsh criticism from the emperor and the tutors of the Imperial children.

"Your Imperial Highness need not worry about having a woman teach you topics in the field of sciences," Doctor Rizal assured, his tone calm and composed as he addressed Yuvraj Siagu. "I have the approval of your father and the tutors who supervise your education. Besides, if you find the woman unsatisfactory after a month under her tutelage, you are free to dismiss her, and your father will automatically replace her with a tutor of your liking."

In Doctor Rizal's mind, his brilliant student must be conflicted about having a woman teach him science, given that only the Empress and Head Court Lady Putri Chaya are permitted to instruct the Crown Prince in etiquette and language. Doctor Rizal understood that the centuries-old tradition of the imperial family was not easily broken, especially regarding the allowance of foreign tutors to educate the monarch's children.

However, Doctor Rizal recognized the crucial importance of allowing fresh and foreign perspectives to be imparted to the Crown Prince. During his last trip to Europe, Doctor Rizal observed that advancements in technology and sciences had become the norm, and he knew that a close-minded monarch would hinder the empire's ambition to dominate the entire globe.

He believed that once the Crown Prince experienced the depth of understanding and unique perspectives a female tutor could offer, his initial resistance would dissipate. Doctor Rizal also knew that this change was not just about education; it was a small step towards modernizing and broadening the horizons of the imperial family and, by extension, the entire empire. He was aware that only a limited number of women were allowed to teach in schools, leaving many competent and qualified individuals behind. This reform, therefore, was not just about improving the Crown Prince's education but also about tapping into the vast potential of these women for the benefit of the empire.

As Doctor Rizal continued to reason with the crown prince, he recalled his own struggles against societal norms and the prejudices he had faced in his quest for knowledge and progress. In the young crown prince's eyes, he saw a reflection of those battles and felt a surge of determination to guide him through this period of change.

"Think of it as an opportunity, Your Imperial Highness," Doctor Rizal added, his tone steady and encouraging. "An opportunity to lead by example, to show your future subjects that wisdom and insight can come from anyone, regardless of gender. Your willingness to embrace this change could inspire others to do the same, fostering a culture of inclusivity and respect."

Yuvraj Siagu remained silent, his gaze drifting to the intricate patterns on the floor. Doctor Rizal waited patiently, aware that the prince needed time to process this new idea. Despite his calm exterior, Doctor Rizal struggled internally, fearing rejection from his brilliant student.

Although Doctor Rizal was unaware, Yuvraj Siagu was not concerned about having a female tutor in the field of science. Instead, Yuvraj Siagu was shocked and incredulous that his own father, Maharaja Siagu XV, permitted a female tutor from Europe. Yuvraj Siagu knew that his father, along with the other tutors who had influence over the education of the main branch of the imperial family, strictly adhered to the practice of employing only Butuanon nationals and male tutors for the emperor's and empress's children.

Setting aside the unusual approval of a woman teaching him science, Yuvraj Siagu was particularly curious about the identity of the woman who would replace Doctor Rizal. He recalled that in his previous world, during the late 19th century, women were still largely restricted from achieving significant accomplishments compared to the advancements women made in the 20th and 21st centuries, which limited the number of renowned women from that earlier era.

One of Yuvraj Siagu's goals upon ascending to the throne was to challenge and break these stereotypes and restrictions against women. He believed that eradicating these barriers was crucial. However, Yuvraj Siagu also recognized that every endeavor had its limitations, reflecting his belief that he was still more conservative with a touch of liberalism.

Still curious about the identity of his future tutor, Yuvraj Siagu inquired, unable to contain his curiosity. Doctor Rizal, with confidence, responded, "Marie… Your Imperial Highness's tutor is named Marie Curie."

As the words left Doctor Rizal's lips, a surge of excitement coursed through Yuvraj Siagu. The mention of his new science tutor's name sent a thrill through his mind, causing an involuntary smile to spread across his face. The name alone—Marie Curie—filled him with delight and anticipation.

Yuvraj Siagu marveled inwardly at the comfortability of his situation. Here he was, a person from the 21st century, reincarnated into the 19th-century world, now presented with the rare opportunity to be tutored by one of history's greatest scientific minds. The historical significance of Marie Curie was not lost on him; her groundbreaking work on radioactivity, her pioneering spirit, and her indomitable will were legendary. To think that he would learn directly from her was almost beyond Yuvraj Siagu's wildest dreams.

He kept his composure, though, maintaining the regal bearing expected of him. His secret—that he had lived another life in another time—remained his own. Even Doctor Rizal, whose wisdom and guidance he deeply respected, knew nothing of his true identity. This was a secret he guarded zealously, understanding the potential chaos and disbelief it could cause if revealed.

As Doctor Rizal finished speaking, Yuvraj Siagu nodded thoughtfully. "Very well, Doctor. I will give Madame Curie a fair trial," he said, carefully modulating his voice to sound both gracious and reserved. "I look forward to our sessions."

Doctor Rizal smiled, clearly relieved and pleased with the prince's response. "I am confident you will find her instruction both enlightening and inspiring, Your Imperial Highness. She is a remarkable scholar and a passionate teacher."

Yuvraj Siagu's mind was already racing ahead, imagining the possibilities that lay before him. The chance to discuss advanced scientific concepts, to explore the nascent field of radioactivity, and perhaps even to glimpse the future he once knew, through the lens of this remarkable woman's insights.

As the meeting concluded and Doctor Rizal took his leave, Yuvraj Siagu found himself alone with his thoughts in the pavilion. Thinking on the possibilities of what his future tutor can contribute not just on his education but also the further advancement of science on the empire. Not to mention that Madam Curie's husband can also contribute a lot on the development of science in the nation.

Deep with his thoughts and imagination of the future with the assistance of Madam Curie and her husband, Yuvraj Siagu could not help it but grin in satisfaction and excitement. Along with his smile, another news worthy to be delighted was pass down by Senior Eunuch Radhesh to Yuvraj Siagu himself, bringing the young crown prince back to reality.

"Your Imperial Highness," Senior Eunuch Radhesh called, with deep respect and seating on the pavilion floor behind his master, "A report from our hired farmers in Kinabatangan have arrived this morning, along with the message from Eunuch Akash Sundar himself."

"Oh? Tell me then." Yuvraj Siagu replied in curiosity, "Brew me some tea, Court Lady Mei Ying."

"Understood, Your Imperial Highness." Court Lady Mei Ying replied as she takes her stand and move towards the left side of Yuvraj Siagu, preparing the tea that her master have requested.

"According to the report that we have received from our farmers hired in Kinabatangan, the rubber plantation that you have decided to expand 10 folds last year have been doing great. Although the initial result will still not be seen for the next 6-7 years. But the batch of rubbers we have acquired from the previous owner of the farm are sufficient enough to be used on your disposal." Senior Eunuch Radhesh replied.

"Hmmm… How about the funds? The men that we have all hired? Any problems with the locals and issues with the communication with the current leadership on the farm?" Yuvraj Siagu collectively inquired while looking at the guarding Imperial Household Guards outside the pavilion along with the other minor courtiers waiting for the arrival of his next tutor after his hour break.

"Currently, we have no problems with the funds being sent to the caretakers of the plantation. The allocation of ¥50 thousand for the first year of planting is sufficient enough to maintain the well-being of the workers and the plants itself. With an average wage of ¥20 to ¥21 per month set by you, Your Imperial Highness, the workers have been showing quite a remarkable performance." Senior Eunuch Radhesh replied but a hint of displeasure can be heard on his tone that never missed the attention of Yuvraj Siagu himself.

"What is it Radhesh that is making you have a tone of displeasure." Yuvraj Siagu calmly stated while slowly eying on his Senior Eunuch behind him while cupping some tea cup, "Spill it or don't even dare on speaking it ever again. You know I hated twisted tongue individuals."

With deep breath and courage, Senior Eunuch Radhesh replied to his master's push, "Forgive me for voicing this, Your Imperial Highness. But it is about the salary of the workers on the plantation."

"Their salary? Why? Is their salary inadequate to sustain them and their families for the entire month?" Yuvraj Siagu curiously asked.

"Not like that, Your Imperial Highness," Senior Eunuch Radhesh denied, "I just believe that the wages that you have provided the workers on the plantation are just too much and is exceeding the minimum pay for plantation workers. The excess wage of the plantation workers could have been used to further expand the plantation and hire more workers to manage the entire plantation."

Even the other senior courtiers of Yuvraj Siagu whom have remained silent the entire conversation between Radhesh and Yuvraj Siagu, have shown their chosen side. With gentle nods and stern expression, it is visible that they have all sided with Senior Eunuch Radhesh. Which Yuvraj Siagu notices and made him smile in satisfaction.

For Yuvraj Siagu opinions and suggestions are important to see different perspective of things. But coupled with this, Yuvraj Siagu also believes that he should only be listening to those whom he trusted and are qualified to share their opinion.

Yuvraj Siagu set his teacup down gently, a thoughtful expression on his face. "Radhesh, I understand your concern. However, the dynamics of our economy and society are changing. The rubber plantations are vital to our kingdom's prosperity. If we want to ensure consistent, high-quality production, we must treat our workers with respect and fairness. This includes paying them a salary that reflects the importance of their labor.

Consider this an investment in our future. A well-compensated worker is not only more productive but also more loyal. High wages reduce turnover, increase efficiency, and decrease the likelihood of unrest or strikes. The cost of constant recruitment and training of new workers, not to mention potential disruptions in production, would far exceed the expense of higher salaries."

He paused, letting his words sink in before continuing. "Moreover, by offering competitive wages, we set a standard for labor practices that can attract the best workers, even from distant regions. This ensures that our plantations are staffed by the most capable hands, further enhancing our output and reputation."

Senior Eunuch Radhesh stroked his chin thoughtfully. "I see your point, Your Imperial Highness. But what about the dissatisfaction among the palace courtiers? They might feel undervalued when they know these workers earning almost as much as they do."

Yuvraj Siagu smiled slightly. "Radhesh, the value of our courtiers is immense, and their concerns are valid. We must indeed ensure that their contributions are also recognized and rewarded appropriately. However, the roles are different, and we must balance the needs of all our people. Enhancing the welfare of plantation workers does ninot diminish the importance of our palace courtiers. We can and will address their grievances, but not at the expense of neglecting the critical backbone of our economy."

Senior Eunuch Radhesh remained silent, deep in thought. Yuvraj Siagu continued, "This is not merely about wages; it is about creating a sustainable, equitable system where every individual feels valued and motivated. Such a foundation will only strengthen our empire in the long run. Remember that our nation has not centralized and regulated the wages of every worker, even their rights were not thoroughly protected. Giving some greedy business and plantation owners a chance to mistreat their workers by giving them poor work conditions and low wages.

I trust that the report regarding the reactions from the locals and other workers in the area have been positive. Am I right?"

Senior Eunuch Radhesh nodded in agreement after reading the report regarding the reaction from the local inhabitants in the area and from the families of the workers themselves. Which sends shock to Senior Eunuch Radhesh himself as the report even stated that more and more people have voiced their willingness to join the workforce in the plantation. Citing that the wages and the treatment that the workers have experienced have been a sweet sap for others to taste.

This made Senior Eunuch Radhesh understand the words of his 10-year-old master after realizing the effect that the ¥20 to ¥21 that his master has given as wages to the plantation workers, comparing this to the common ¥10 to ¥15 per month. With what his master have done, Senior Eunuch Radhesh understood that his master, Yuvraj Siagu, have started a revolution in treating common workers and their situation in workplace.

With nods of satisfaction and realization of goodwill, Senior Eunuch Radhesh replied reverently, "May the Lord bless you and your family for your goodness and great foresight, Your Imperial Highness."

"Enough with your sweet words," Yuvraj Siagu shakingly stated, "Continue with the reports regarding Akash."

Senior Eunuch Radhesh composes himself before replying, "Eunuch Akash reported that for the past months of staying in Hawai'i, he observed the continual monitoring of ships from the United States. And according to him, the United States might be establishing some facilities in their island in the pacific after seeing the frequency of ships heading to the sea."

'The United States must be planning on early developing the Midway Island for their advantage and to established their presence in the area. Given that they have been, by this time supporting the rebels in Cuba, President William McKinley must be anticipating a battle with Spain.' Yuvraj Siagu thought deeply after hearing the words of Senior Eunuch Radhesh.

But before Yuvraj Siagu could even further expands his thoughts about the matter, his next tutor, Pedro Paterno, arrived escorted by an Imperial Household Guard and some few personal courtiers of Yuvraj Siagu.

Pedro Paterno, an acclaimed Butuanon historian and a great contributor in preserving and promoting the Butuanon culture. Ensuring its survival and flourishment despite Butuan being the melting pot of cultures from the western world and eastern world. A graduate of Political Science and History from the Imperial University of Santo Tomas. There, he distinguished himself as a scholar with a deep understanding of political theory, governance, and international relations, graduating with honors.

Following his undergraduate degree, Paterno continued his academic journey at the University of Paris (Sorbonne), where he obtained a Master's degree in History. His thesis, which focused on the comparative governance structures of independent Southeast Asian kingdoms, including Butuan, showcased his analytical skills and his ability to synthesize complex historical narratives. His time in Paris exposed him to diverse perspectives and further solidified his reputation as a scholar of remarkable intellect.

With dreams of further enriching the Butuanon culture, Paterno returns to Butuan and took the position of professor at the Riverbanks Imperial Institution, where he taught courses on political science, history, and governance. His teachings were not merely academic; they were infused with a deep sense of patriotism and a desire to foster a new generation of leaders who could navigate the complexities of both local and global politics.

After 10 years of being a professor, Pedro Paterno became the dean of Political Science of the Riverbanks Imperial Institution after finishing his doctorate degree in Civil Law at the Riverbanks Imperial Institution. In 1893, he was awarded the Order of the Cross of Akaash III. In March 1894, he was then appointed as the Director of Sooraj Museum. Pedro Paterno was then chosen as one of the tutors of Yuvraj Siagu, replacing Doctor Rizal in teaching history and politics, which Pedro Paterno accepted.
