chapter 3

Emma could hardly believe what she was seeing. A creature straight out of legend stood before her - one of the faerie folk from her village's tales. Yet Aisling's gentle nature put her slightly at ease.

"Why did you help me? I was told your kind play tricks on humans," Emma said warily. Aisling chuckled, a musical sound like the forest after rain. "There are those of my kind who find amusement in the smaller folk. But I mean you no harm. I only wish to ensure no guest comes to danger in my woods."

Emma was taken aback by such kindness from an ethereal being. Before she could stop herself, she found herself asking, "What is it like, where you come from?" Aisling's glowing eyes seemed to look inward as she replied, "My homeland lies deep in the heart of this forest, in glades filled with magic you cannot see. We live among the trees as guardians of this sacred place. It is a life of harmony and beauty."

Her words painted such a magical picture that Emma was filled with wonder. She longed to see this hidden world for herself. But her village would surely deem her bewitched if she consorted with the faerie folk. A sad smile crossed Aisling's delicate features, as if reading her thoughts. "The mortal realm sees us only as tricksters. But I hope in time, you may find truth beyond your folk's fearful superstitions." Emma felt her view of the world shifting, and knew nothing would ever be the same.
