Chapter 4 Life is unfair

As Zephyrion and Layla walked hand in hand along the bridge, he couldn't help but admire her strength and bravery. But when he brought up the incident with the boy earlier that day, Layla seemed embarrassed.

"It was just self-defense, believe me," Layla said, blushing. "I don't usually beat people up. Okay? You believe me, right?"

Zephyrion couldn't help but smile at her defensiveness. "Of course, I believe you," he said. "But I was curious if you could teach me some martial arts. Just look at how weak I look. I want to be able to defend myself."

Layla looked him up and down, considering his request. "You do look pretty weak and pathetic," she said with a grin. "But don't worry, I'll defend you if someone wants to fight you. You know I'm pretty tough."

Zephyrion's pride took a hit at her words. He shook his head and said sternly, "That won't do. I'm the man, so I should be the one defending you, instead of the other way around."

Layla looked surprised by his response but then smiled. "Okay, then. I can teach you some moves," she said, with a glint in her eye. "But don't think it's going to be easy. You'll have to work hard if you want to keep up with me."

Zephyrion grinned back. "Challenge accepted," he said, feeling a newfound determination to become stronger, both for himself and for Layla.

As they continued their walk, Zephyrion felt his phone vibrating incessantly. He checked it and saw missed calls from his father and best friend Kai, the latter of whom he decided to call back.

"Kai, what's going on?" he asked, noticing the urgency in his friend's voice.

"Something's happened at your place, man. You need to come, ASAP," Kai replied.

Zephyrion's heart sank at the news, but he remained calm and thanked Kai before ending the call. He turned to Layla with a sad expression.

"Sorry, Layla. I have to go. Something's happened at home," he said apologetically.

Layla looked disappointed, but understandingly nodded her head. "I get it. Let's meet up tomorrow at school, okay?" She then handed him her phone. "Here's my number. Make sure to save it under 'girlfriend'," she said with a playful smile before giving him a kiss on the cheek.

Zephyrion felt his heart swell with happiness. He had a girlfriend, and a wonderful one at that. He quickly saved her number on his phone with a heart next to her name.

"Thanks, Layla. I'll see you tomorrow," he said with a smile, before walking off in the direction of his home.

Layla smiled back and went home, which is also where Kate lived.

As he hurried home, Zephyrion's mind raced with worry. What could have happened? Was his family okay? He quickened his pace, his heart pounding in his chest. On his way home, he noticed several flashing lights from the police cars and ambulances driving in the direction of his house. As he saw this, he picked up his pace once again, expecting the worst.

Zephyrion's worst fears came true, his heart felt like it was being ripped apart. The flashing lights of the police cars and ambulances felt like a surreal nightmare that he couldn't wake up from.

As Zephyrion stumbled towards the emergency responders, his mind raced with a maelstrom of emotions. The police officers and paramedics looked at him with a mix of sympathy and sorrow as they gave him the devastating news. His mother had attempted to kill his father in a fit of rage, as he had betrayed her with another woman, but during the struggle, the knife had slipped from her hand and she had accidentally stabbed herself. Overcome with guilt and grief, his father had taken his own life.

Zephyrion felt his knees buckle as he tried to comprehend the magnitude of the tragedy that had befallen his family. The weight of his loss was crushing him, and he felt like he had lost everything he had ever known. The future that he had always envisioned for himself now seemed uncertain and bleak, and he couldn't help but wonder how he was going to move forward.

As the reality of the situation sank in, a wave of guilt washed over him. He had always fought with his parents about certain things, and had even wanted nothing more than to live alone without them. But now, faced with the irreversible consequences of his wishes, he realized that this was not what he truly wanted. He kept muttering to himself, "This wasn't what I wanted. I just wanted my peace. why, Why, Why? Why is life so unfair?"

He held his head up and shouted at the top of his lungs, "AHHHHHHHHH!"

Zephyrion's world had crumbled around him, and he felt completely alone and lost. The pain of his loss was almost unbearable, and he wondered how he would ever be able to pick up the pieces and move on. As he knelt there, tears streaming down his face, he felt a heavy weight in his chest that made it hard to breathe.

Kai and his parents also arrived on the scene, and Kai rushed over to Zephyrion, and gave him a big hug. The warmth of Kai's embrace provided a small measure of comfort, but it could not fill the void that had opened up inside him.

Zephyrion's heart ached as he thought of all the memories he had shared with his family. The laughter, the fights, the love, the discussion and the warmth of their embraces now seemed like distant echoes, lost forever. He wondered how he would ever be able to live without them.

Kai, sensing Zephyrion's pain, held him tighter and tried words of comfort. But the words felt empty and meaningless, unable to ease the weight of the grief that threatened to consume Zephyrion.

As the sun began to set, Zephyrion and Kai sat on the curb outside the house, watching the emergency responders as they continued their work. Zephyrion's heart was heavy with sadness, and he knew that his life would never be the same again.

After some time of sitting in silence, Kai finally spoke up in an attempt to comfort his friend. "Hey man, my parents told me that you're welcome to stay with us until you're old enough and can have your own place. And we can even play video games together every day!" he said, trying to inject some levity into the somber atmosphere.

Zephyrion appreciated Kai's effort to cheer him up, but his heart was still heavy with grief. His eyes were tired and puffy from crying all night, and he felt lost and alone in the world.

Despite his pain, he turned to Kai and forced a small smile. "Thanks, man. I appreciate it," he said in a hoarse voice.

Kai knew that his friend's smile was forced, but he also knew that it would take time for Zephyrion to heal. He vowed to be there for him every step of the way.

As Kai's parents came over, they took charge of the situation and made arrangements for Zephyrion to move in with them. They knew that it would be a difficult transition for him, but they were determined to provide him with a stable and loving home.

Zephyrion couldn't believe the kindness that Kai and his parents were showing him. Still the thought of starting over was daunting...

Two weeks had passed since the arrangements were made for Zephyrion to live with Kai and his family. During this time, Zephyrion had become a recluse, isolating himself from the world outside. He had not attended school, and his phone had been buzzing incessantly with messages from concerned friends, but he had not mustered the strength to respond to any of them.

As he lay on his bed, lost in his own thoughts, he heard a faint knock on the door. At first, he ignored it, thinking it was just Kai or his parents checking up on him. But then, he heard a soft voice that he had not heard since two weeks.

"Zephyrion, it's me, Layla. Could we please talk?"

Zephyrion's heart skipped a beat. The thought of seeing her after all that had happened made him feel nervous and confused.

He got up slowly and opened the door. Layla was standing there, looking worried and sad. Her eyes were red, and it seemed like she had been crying.

"Hey," Zephyrion said softly, not knowing what else to say.

"Hey," Layla replied, her voice shaking slightly. "I heard about what happened, and I just wanted to come and see how you were doing."

Zephyrion felt a lump form in his throat. He had not expected Layla to show up, especially after everything that had happened. But he was also grateful that she had come.

"I'm not doing so great," he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper.

Layla stepped into the room and closed the door behind her. She sat down on the bed next to him, and for a few moments, they just sat there in silence, each lost in their own thoughts.

Finally, Layla spoke up. "You know it's really rude to ignore your girlfriend for two weeks, but I'm not mad, just want you to know that I'm here for you, Zephyrion. Whatever you need, I'll be here."

Zephyrion looked at her, and for the first time in weeks, he felt a glimmer of hope. Maybe, just maybe, things would be okay after all.

"Thanks..."

I know the prologue may seem rushed and lacking in detail, but please keep in mind that it is just a collection of memories from Zephyrion's past before he passed away. The memories are fleeting and often incomplete, as they were only pieces of his life that stuck with him. As we move forward in the story, more details and depth will be added to the characters and their experiences.
