When a Beast Tamer makes a contract with a beast, he usually gets the skill that the beast has or if the beast has more than one, a random one from those skills would be picked. The tamer has no control over that.
As Chris's pet has two skills, he thought that he got one of those two skills but when he saw his status he was totally surprised to see that he got none of his pet's skills. Rather than that, he got its talent as his new skill.
"Snow, you are too clever for your own good. You are trying to make me a lazy one, so that I wouldn't wake you to training, huh?" Chris muttered as he started to yawn.
"Ah, you are making me sleepy already. Sleep here, I am going to the bathroom", Chris yawned again as he went to complete his morning routine.

The skill one would get after contracting a beast is not controllable unless it has only one skill when you contract it. If there are more than one, then it is a gamble.
So most would choose a beast with good skills and that too in a limited number.
If a beast has too many skills, what skill they would get is pure gamble. So while choosing their beast, anyone with brains would think to choose the one with rare skills or something like that.
If the beast has common skills, then it is out of selection as contracting might give the tamer those common skills, which are mostly useless.
For example, there is a common skill [Bite], which most beasts would have. It was because of their use of fangs and teeth. What use could the tamer have of this skill if he gets this skill?
Humans don't usually use their teeth to attack their enemies. So the skill [Bite ] would be a waste collecting dust in the skill section.
So beast tamers are selective when it comes to selecting their beasts.
For a newbie beast tamer, the only tension would be what race they have to select as newborn beasts would have usually one skill in most cases and that one would perfectly fit their race. So they don't need to worry about that.
The problem was finding so many eggs would not be easy and the alliance would usually buy those beast eggs at a premium. So keeping a few for future generations, most eggs are sold to the alliance.
After reaching a certain rank, no one would have time to contract eggs and raise them from the start. So they would contract beasts either from the wild or if they have money, they would choose from breeding houses.
Breeding houses, would train the beasts to be efficient in their skills and also learn new skills that are useful to them in battles. It would be like a ready-made product, that is ready for imminent use.
Most tamers, see training their pets as a waste of time, at least before they contract them. They don't have time to tame in the wild or raise those beasts from the start.
Taming wild beasts has a chance of failure, when compared to the ones from breeding grounds. So many prefer beasts raised here but not everyone can afford the prices.
Since these beasts are raised in a certain way, their cost would be very high.
The society is at a place, where most beast tamers are either in middle class or below that range. They can't afford the price. Instead of buying they try their luck in the wild, even though the chances of getting a good skill would drop to the least probability.

After completing his morning routine, Chris saw that his pet was still sleeping contentedly on his bed. Since he already knew that this scenario would be the common scenario from now on, he shook his head in defeat.
What he wanted was a powerful beast as a pet, but he was assigned a lazy bum but that would have to do as he has no other choice for now.
He can break the contract with the fox and make a new beast as his pet or if his soul is strong, he can make a contract with a new one.
The issue was that he had no idea if he had enough soul strength to contract another pet and even if he wanted and could, his family was not that rich to splurge their money like that. It was because of this, he had decided to select a pet yesterday from the free beast eggs.
Moreover, cancelling a contract is not encouraged as that could damage the soul. Sure it would heal naturally but in that time, one can't make a new contract with another pet.
So, whether it was lazy or not, Snow is his first partner and remains true until his or his pet's death.
Shaking his head, Chris picked up his pet, "Hey Snow, I am going to eat. If you don't wake up, there will be no food for you", he stated.
Woof!
Woof!
The frost fox woke up, after hearing that it wouldn't have food.
'A lazy bum and a foodie as I thought', Chris thought in his mind.
Now he was sure that he could make this lazy bum work as long as he offered her good food as a reward.
He was not going to spoil her. He would give normal food for normal occasions and special food for special occasions. This is so that he wouldn't let her know, she doesn't need to work so hard to get those special food.
If she realizes that, she would rather sleep than work. This is something he can't let happen as he wants her to reach the top ranks.

After his words woke up his pet, Chris went to the hall to have his breakfast, where Snow met the rest of his family.
