School, School, and Misfortune

"It seems this is another day of misfortune. I don't believe in fate or the horoscope that those born between January to February has the highest luck stats. But where is my good luck charm, huh? Did someone lay a curse of me using a cursed doll or was I simply born unlucky? Am I unlucky because I'm Ryuji Kamijou or am I Ryuji Kamijou because I am unlucky?"

Ryuji Kamijou grumbled at the unfairness of life.

Summer break had long passed but that didn't mean the same for summer. On sunny days, the weather reaches temperatures of 30°C.

Simply put, the weather was hot and nobody liked walking under the sunny road or staying in a hot classroom with no air conditioning especially when they were wearing a blazer which made them even more hot.

But if it was just that then Kamijou wouldn't have been complaining this much on a Tuesday morning. From the moment he begun to walk on his two legs, life has always treated him unfairly.

On his way to Kuoh academy, a passing bird decided it was a good day to take a shit and he just happened to be under that passing bird. In the end, his blazer got strained with bird poop and he had to go back home to change. As he did, he forgot his lunch box back home so he had to go back a second time. Then a guy riding a bicycle ran into him by accident and he ended up dropping his lunch box. But it didn't end there, a moving car passed and crushed his lunch box with the food within it. While Kamijou was grieving, the same bird from before came back and took a shit on his uniform which made the boy travel back to his house for the third time.

If it was anyone else, they would have thought they were cursed. But for Kamijou, this was just a daily occurance. Although it didn't mean he would just take that harsh treatment and be quiet about it. Even so, It's not like complaining is going to change his daily life, make him more lucky or fill his pockets with money.

"Ugh..!"

Kamijou sighed. When he remembered he would go on a date with Yuuma in just a few days, his spirits immediately dropped. If she was a normal girl, he would have been happy. But that girl was a fallen angel in disguise. Yes, the type of supernatural being that you could only find in a fantasy book.

If anyone said how was that a problem, he would give that person a good old right hock. Sure, you could say not fallen angels are bad or terrible, but that does not erase the fact they have gone some pretty terrible things in the past. He was just unfortunate enough to meet a fallen that derived pleasure from hurting others.

If his history of misfortune was known to his classmates, it will immediately enter the ranks of the seven school mysteries.

"Hey Kamijou, what's up! Huh? What's with that look? Why are you always gloomy in the morning?"

That voice belonged to Saji who had approached Kamijou.

Kamijou sighed.

"I'm just wondering why I'm so unfortunate. It's like the universe is playing a sick prank on me and laughing at my misfortune?"

"Oh please, you don't have to be so dramatic about it. It's not like you are the only one that have experienced misfortune."

"Yeah right. If I was to write down all the misfortunes I have experienced in my life, I will be able to fill an entire library and there won't still be enough space. What are the chances of a bird shitting over you three days in a row?!!! But it's not like you will understand!!"

Saji shrugged his shoulders in response to the grumbling Kamijou.

"Alright, alright, you are unlucky, I get it. How about we have lunch?"

"Oh, the usual spot."

Kamijou stood up from his seat and followed Saji past the door. It was currently lunch break. The cafeteria was crowded and Kamijou hated large crowds. Therefore, the rooftop was the perfect spot to eat in silence.

After finishing the climb up the stairs, Kamijou and Saji got onto the rooftop.

First thing their eyes fell onto a clear blue color above the earth. The beautiful sky. A transparent blue sky that could only be witnessed in the summer. A bright sunlight was shining down, but it wasn't an unpleasant humidity. A cool and refreshing wind was blew occasionally.

Kamijou wanted to spread his arms and accept the gentle wind but he noticed they were not the only ones present in this rooftop.

He noticed someone sitting on his favorite bench. A small figure, white hair and golden eyes. Kamijou immediately realised who that person was. After all, he met her just the other day.

Koneko noticed their presence, she quietly turned her head, nodded and looked over at the other bench on the rooftop. Although she didn't say anything, Kamijou knew she was telling him to sit over there.

Kamijou sighed. After what happened this morning, he didn't have any strength to deal with this underclassmen. He quietly sat down on the other bench and opened his lunch box.

But what he didn't notice was that Koneko flinched when he opened his lunch box. The aroma oozing from the dish made Koneko swallow her dry saliva.

"Hm?"

Kamijou's line of thought was cut short when he noticed Koneko was staring at him. No, she wasn't staring at him, she was staring at his lunch box.

...Could it be?

Kamijou thought. He decided to do a little experiment. He raised the lunch box and moved it to different directions. As he expected, Koneko's eyes followed the moving lunch box as if her eyes were glued to it.

...Oh? Is that how it is now?

A cruel smile erupted on Kamijou's lips. This underclassmen has been teasing him all this time, so shouldn't he pay her back in kind?

Kamijou placed the lunch box on his lap and clapped before saying "Itadakimasu!!", carried his chopsticks and proceeded to eat while ignoring the desperate Koneko.

Koneko tightly clenched the cookie in her hand and glared at the smiling Kamijou as If he had just killed her parents.

...Hold on, something is not right.

Kamijou noticed this place was oddly quiet. If Saji was here, he would have been yapping about something right now. He looked around and noticed Saji was no longer here.

Where did he run off to? Kamijou thought as he slightly frowned. Who invites someone to go and eat then go somewhere else. It reminded him of those dish and runners who leave their comrade behind to pay the bill.

"Ah! That's right."

His line of thought was cut as he remembered Koneko was still staring at him. She resembled an angry cat that just had its favorite fish stolen. Even so, she looked very cute.

After moving the lunch box a few more times, he realised Koneko's eyes never left his lunch box. When he moved it forward, her expression will soften. But when he pulls it backwards, she would frown.

Soft, Frown Soft, Frown, Soft, Frown.

It was funny seeing how a person expression could change. Kamijou was having so much fun teasing his junior. But he realised if he continued like this, there was a chance that Koneko would punch him. That thought alone sent shivers across his spine.

He stood up from his bench and approached the frowning Koneko.

"Come on now, you don't have to look at me like that princess. Here, you want this right?"

He pushed the lunch box towards her but Koneko just stared at it for a moment before she shifted her head to the other side with a "Hmph."

"And how I thought you wanted this, but it seems I was mistak.. Eh! W-Wha?!!"

With the speed of sound, Koneko snatched the lunch box from his hand and started eagerly eating his food. Kamijou was left dumbfounded. He looked like someone had slapped him in the face with a wet fish.

(Is my food really that delicious? It's just a simple dish yet she's eating it as if it is a high quality sea food. If I ask to take some, I don't think she will give me any. Is this a form of misfortune?)

He sighed. So much for eating in silence. Kamijou thought as he turned around to leave. But he had to stop in his tracks when he felt something pulling on his sleeve.

When he turned his head, he saw Koneko pulling his sleeve. In the next moment, she pushed her bag of cookies forward. It seems she was trying to trade her cookies for his lunch box.

"You do know cookies can't compete with my lunch box, right? Wait, why do you eat these cookies all the time? Does it taste any good?"

"It's sweet."

"Aren't all cookies sweet?"

Kamijou tilted his head. He felt he had come across someone who said not all bread are made from flour. Although he was not a fan of sweet things, even he knew that much.

"It's sweet."

"..."

"It's sweet."

"..."

"It's sweet."

It seemed she obstinately wanted to brainwash him.

"Okay, okay, cookies are sweet. I give up."

Kamijou sighed, collected the bag of cookies and left the rooftop for the hungry Koneko. He proceeded down the stairs and took a bite of the cookie.

"Huh? That's strange."

The cookie had a weird taste. It had this distinct taste that he couldn't put his finger on. It had a taste similar to bread yet different at the same time. Even so, Kamijou didn't like that funny flavour.

(How the hell was she eating this? I thought it tasted good that's why she was eating this or is her sense of taste that bad? Wait a minute, was it why she was so quick to give it up?)

Kamijou began to lose strength in his knees. When that possibility emerged, he tried to deny it but it made so much sense. At this moment, he started to feel he was somewhat cheated.

"Such misfortune."

Kamijou continued to eat the cookies with tears in his eyes.
