D.W.O. Part II

“How did you know that?!”

“As I said, we’re different.” The staff continued, “We matched your appearance with databases around the world since you logged into the game.”

“That’s illegal!” Tan shouted.

The staff looked down on him. “You must have just said ‘Yes’ without reading the user agreement.” He continued, “We actually stated that in the document you first saw.”

Tan was stunned for a while after hearing that before changing the topic of conversation. “Well, let’s start. I want to name my character.”

“No can do.”

“What do you mean by that?” Tan frowned.

“You can’t name your character in this game. You must use your real name in the game—real first name and family name.”

“What?!”

The staff sighed once more. “It is stated in the term agreement.”

Tan was stunned once more by the response. Noticing his reaction, the staff sighed and asked, “If you can name your character, what would be the name?”

“Tanthai.” He replied quickly with determination on his face.

The staff looked at Tan again and then asked, “So what is the difference? Either way, it’s going to be Tanthai.”

“What…don’t you understand? At least I can make my own choice.” Tanthai answered after seeing the look on the other party’s face.

“Well, you must use your real name as your character’s name. Let’s move forward.” The staff touched the screen a few times. “Let’s choose your job.”

“Job?” Tan repeated the word.

“Yes…In D.W.O, Duel World Online, there are 495 Jobs and 1,819 Classes to choose from. You would know if you read the manual.” The staff explained as he looked at Tanthai. Seeing the look on the latter face, he then sighed.

“You haven’t read it.” He concluded.

“What are they?” Tan asked.

“There are tons of them. I suggest that you should leave and read the manual first.” The staff said while looking at the screen. “Though, we have a random option…”

Tan’s eyes lit up as he heard the word ‘random.’ “Do it. I can go with any job. They all are more or less the same,” said Tanthai.

“But…”

“Do it.”

“It’s…”

“Come on! Just do it!”

The staff sighed…He was not sure how many times he sighed since he met this guy. “As you wish. There’s one more thing. Not all 495 Jobs and 1,819 Classes will be available for random because some jobs and classes have special conditions…” He said while touching the screen on the side a few times. Immediately after that, a random button appeared before Tan.

“Just push?” Tanthai asked as he looked at the staff.

“Yes…Just push.”

Hearing the answer, Tan pushed the button. A list of all the Jobs and Classes that were available for him spun around so fast that human eyes couldn’t catch. It kept spinning around for half a minute. When the list stopped, an announcement from the system rang out.

Job…

“Amateur Gambler”

Class…

“Vagabond”

Tanthai frowned as he saw his job and his class. “Let’s redo it. This Job and Class sound so pitiful…” He muttered.

“You can only random just once.” The staff replied calmly.

“What?! Why didn’t you tell me that?!” Tan went mad.

“I was going to, but you won’t listen.”

Tan shook his head. “Then, I create a new character…”

“Players can create only one character.” The staff said. He was fed up as he looked at Tanthai.

“What if…”

“Everything is in the manual.” The staff repeated himself. Tan wasn’t sure if it was just in his head, but he thought he heard a sigh.

“That means…” Tan continued, “In this game, I have only this Job and Class?”

“Of course not.” The answer made Tanthai feel better. “You also get a set of 60 cards as a starter deck.” The staff smiled.

“Don’t worry…everyone gets the same deck to start with…Please begin your adventure at your starter town.”

After that, Tanthai was teleported into the light he had seen before. The system sound rang out.

Player Tanthai has received…

Fifteen 1-Star Summon Cards, Apprentice Warrior.

Thirteen 1-Star Summon Cards, Apprentice Mage.

The light disappeared. He found himself in a land that was rather…rural. Buildings here were one-story houses with roofs made of natural resources. Looking around, he saw mountains, a river, the sky, and some players.

This is the starter town…

Duel World Online…

Tan looked around after the announcement ended. There were trees, grass, and a small village at the end of sight, but in front of him, something was blocking the way…

A monster resembled a human but smaller, a goblin…

Tanthai turned to the village, his destination. Not just in the game, a skill that he was born with was activated…

…Running skill.

----------------

He entered the village safe and sound. Few people were walking around. This place was probably the starter town. A name suddenly popped up in his mind.

Pieta…the starter town.

He stood to his feet and walked towards a guy in cheap silver armor.

“Excuse me, is this place a starter town called Pieta?” He asked.

The guy in armor frowned and looked back at him. “Well…the starter town in this game changes every month to scatter players throughout the world. Pieta is probably on the other side of the world.”

……

………

Holy Sh*t!

He spoke as he swore in his mind. “This is bad. I should’ve read the manual.” The thought was a bit too late…

The armored guy looked at him and laughed. “Open the inventory and read the manual there. You will get some ideas about the system of this game, but for insights, you might have to find it yourself because the developers tell us nothing.”

Tan sighed and thanked the armored guy. Dispiritedly, he walked to a corner of the village and sat on an old stone bench. He spent time there a couple of hours, gaining knowledge about the game.

“Normally, a deck consists of 60 cards. At the beginning of a battle, the first 7 cards will be randomly drawn. Each card uses a different amount of MP depending on how many stars it has. Some cards have a special condition to activate. MP will slowly recover based on the skills of the player’s job. Every minute a card will be drawn. Hmm…I must think and plan wisely.” He murmured to himself.

After that, he checked his status…

Player: Tanthai

Job: Amateur Gambler

Class: Vagabond

Level 1

HP 80

MP 4

SP 1

Skill:

Lifeline: Reduce HP to 1, deal damage to enemies. Consume 1 SP to activate (This skill cannot be activated again within 24 hours after being activated.)

“I look weak,” Tan said to himself, and he was right—a newbie at level 1 was supposed to be weak. “But I should try it and see for myself.” He said as he walked outside of the East side of the town. He soon found his target.

A goblin…

He ran into a monster in front of him, and suddenly, something popped up on his left side—a screen showing 7 cards, Health Points (HP), Mana Points (MP), and Skill Points (SP).

Battle Start!

Level 1 Goblin has appeared!

Tanthai knew how to fight from the manual. He immediately picked four cards from the pile of seven cards.

“Summon!”
