Chapter 1Prologue I: A Shadow on the Celestial Skies

A biting wind whipped across the peaks of the Astral Mountains, a harsh contrast to the usual serene hum of the Dragon Realm. Rex, Dragon Sovereign of the Celestial Skies, stood on a precipice overlooking the swirling vortex that marked the edge of known reality. His normally stoic expression was etched with concern. Beside him stood Faye, his Dragon Queen, her scales shimmering like twilight in the fading light.

Silence stretched between them, broken only by the howling wind. It wasn't the usual peaceful quiet that often accompanied their evenings spent gazing at the celestial wonders. Today, the air crackled with a tension that sent shivers down Faye's spine.

A loud boom resonated through the air, shaking the very ground beneath them. It was the unmistakable voice of Rex's father, Caedric, the Dragon Emperor. His voice, usually booming with authority, held a deep urgency. "Rex, Faye! Come swiftly to the Dragon Spire. We have critical matters to discuss."

Rex and Faye exchanged a worried glance. Summons from the Emperor were rare, and the urgency in his voice sent a jolt of unease through them. Important matters meant trouble, and critical matters often meant disaster. A silent nod passed between them, and with a powerful beat of their wings, they launched themselves into the sky.

They soared through the vibrant tapestry of the Dragon Realm, leaving behind the jagged peaks of the Astral Mountains. The skies pulsed with celestial energy, a constant reminder of the magic that flowed throughout their domain. As they flew, a rapid exchange of thoughts passed between them through their telepathic bond. The unease gnawed at both their minds.

"What do you think it could be?" Faye asked, her voice laced with worry. Rex frowned, his powerful jaw clenched tight.

"There have been rumors of discontent amongst the Dragonkin clans in the Southern Dominion," Rex replied, voicing one of their shared concerns. "But surely they wouldn't dare break the ancient pacts?"

The Dragon Wars, a brutal conflict fueled by distrust and paranoia, were a dark stain on their history. The memory of those battles still resonated, a reminder of the devastation that could erupt once more.

As they neared the Dragon Spire, an immense structure carved from the heart of a colossal mountain, Rex felt a surge of foreboding. The closer they flew, the more the heavy feeling grew. The Spire was usually a place of bustling activity, filled with royal guards and advisors. Today, however, an unsettling quiet hung heavy in the air.

They landed gracefully on the wide platform overlooking the entrance. Two royal guards, their scales a deep crimson, stood tall and rigid, a stark contrast to their usual welcoming stance. They bowed their heads deeply as Rex and Faye approached.

"Sovereigns," one of the guards rumbled, his voice devoid of its usual warmth. "The Paragons await you within."

Without a word, Rex and Faye marched through the massive double doors into the Grand Chamber. The vast hall, usually bustling with activity, was bathed in an eerie silence. In the center, the five Paragons – the elder dragons who ruled the vast Dragon Empire – sat on their obsidian thrones. They were Caedric, the Dragon Emperor, a majestic being radiating ancient power, his normally fiery eyes burning with worry; Cressida, Rex's mother and Dragon Queen of the Eastern Seas, her usually gentle demeanor replaced by a steely resolve; Evarius, the fiery Dragon Sovereign of the Southern Dominion, his scales smoldering with barely contained anger; Elara, Faye's mother and Dragon Queen of the Western Reaches, her regal bearing masking a deep concern; and lastly, there was Aegos, the enigmatic Dragon Sovereign of the Northern Wastes, his eyes hidden behind a veil of shadow.

The air crackled with tension as Rex and Faye took their places at the foot of the dais. Caedric cleared his throat, his voice heavy with worry.

"Rex, Faye," he began, his gaze sweeping across his assembled family. "We have gathered you here today to discuss a matter of utmost importance. Reports from the Southern Dominion reveal a worrying trend."

He paused, his gaze flickering to Evarius, whose jaw was clenched tight. Evarius cleared his throat, his voice tight with anger.

"Dragonkin activity has increased significantly over the past few months," he growled. "Several outposts have reported unusual movements near their borders. More importantly, there are whispers of rebellion among some of the younger Dragonkin clans."

Faye felt a cold dread seep into her heart. Could the ancient pacts, forged after centuries of bloody conflict, be fracturing? The thought was terrifying.

"Rebellion?" Rex echoed, his voice low and dangerous. A tremor ran through the chamber as the other Paragons shifted uncomfortably. "Surely there must be some misunderstanding. The Dragonkin understand the consequences of breaking the peace."

Cressida, Rex's mother, interjected with a sigh. "The pact held strong for millennia, Rex. But times change, and old wounds can fester. These reports suggest a deliberate effort to stir unrest within the Dragonkin clans."

"Indeed," Elara, Faye's mother, added, her voice firm. "There are whispers of a charismatic leader, one who preaches defiance and speaks of a hidden prophecy."

A collective gasp rippled through the chamber. Prophecies were a touchy subject amongst Dragons. They were often cryptic and open to interpretation, leading to past conflicts.

Aegos, the enigmatic Dragon Sovereign of the Northern Wastes, finally spoke. His voice, when it came, was a low rumble, like distant thunder. "What do these whispers say about this prophecy?"

Evarius, still fuming, answered. "They claim it speaks of a harbinger, a creature of immense power destined to either unite or divide our people."

Rex felt a surge of anger rise within him. "Prophecies are mere whispers in the wind. We have peace, a hard-won one. Let them not shatter it."

Caedric shook his head, his expression grim. "This prophecy… it speaks of a harbinger with an uncanny connection to the Astral flow, a being of immense potential." His gaze met Rex and Faye's, a terrifying certainty in his eyes. "…And some believe this Harbinger walks among us."

The chamber fell silent. The weight of Caedric's words hung heavy in the air. A harbinger, a potential Dragonkin leader, and their son, Zane, with his unusual connection to the Astral flow - the pieces were starting to fall into place in a horrifying way.

Faye felt a cold sweat prickle her scales. Could her playful, rambunctious son be at the center of this brewing storm? The thought was unthinkable, yet the unease in her gut refused to be silenced.

Cressida, sensing her daughter's distress, placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. "We do not know the full extent of the prophecy, Faye. But Zane's potential is undeniable."

Elara, ever the pragmatist, chimed in. "We cannot afford to wait and see. We Dragons must unify. We must quell this rebellion before it consumes us all."

The Paragons erupted into a flurry of debate, their voices echoing through the chamber. Rex and Faye remained silent; their hearts heavy with a newfound burden. Zane – a child of destiny, possibly the harbinger of uncertain times. The future, once thought to be peaceful, hung in the balance.

GlaringError here! As I have already mentioned in my author review I am restating it here since I am getting tons of comments about it, that I am more of a reader myself than a writer, I made this novel in an attempt to capture my fantasy world residing in my mind into words.. Writing is new for me.. The premise of my novel is inspired by many great works that I have loved over the years. And some elements I have in my novel that are slightly similar to them but it's just the skeleton of it, the real meat of the plot is entirely my own cooking. Some of the influence that is more noticeable is from The Runesmith (By Kuropon), The King's Avatar (By Butterfly Blue) and Shadow Slave (By Guiltythree). I have immense respect for these legends and I can only hope to follow in their footsteps. To all those who comment just by judging the name, at least give it a chance before letting your opinions be known. Thank you.

Disclaimer: I'd received a few complaints from some readers that my MC is not a real villain, and I have to agree; if you're looking for some complete psycho MC who burns random farmer villages down just for fun then don't read. The MC is a ruthless man who does evil things from time to time, but only to his enemies or those he considers to be true scum. He gains no joy from tormenting strangers. Also don't read if you want a story about buying s*x slaves and r*ping them, that doesn't happen in this novel. He will treat the women he wants to be with as if they were normal people, whether they're slaves or not.
