"Come in," Richard invited him in.
"What are you doing here, Ledger?" He asked.
Richard knew that Ledger should not be anywhere around the building during office hours because that was how it had been during Adam's time.
Richard was surprised that the chauffeur was in his office. From the notes he was given, Ledger should never be anywhere near the building during office hours.
Didn't he know this abrupt change in behavior could blow their cover? He was trying to adapt to the company. Ledger shouldn't obstruct him.
"Good day sir," Ledger greeted him.
"I'm here to fill you in on something important." Ledger clarified.
"What is it?' Richard sat up immediately.
Had something slipped from him? Had Ledger noticed any abnormalities? He wondered what was really going on.
"You forget this in the car. I noticed it just a few minutes ago," Ledger moved closer and handed over a file to him.
"Oh my goodness! Thank you so much Ledger," Richard said.
He had spent that morning searching for it. He thought he had misplaced it. And thoughts of how he'd replace it filled his head.
He had initially thought he forgot it at home but he had called the maid to check his room, she had gotten back to him that it wasn't there.
He needed it urgently. He wanted to use it to work on another file before he continued his work but it had to stay on hold for the moment.
Now it was here before him he'd get back to work immediately.
Ledger cleared his throat to signify his presence.
"There's still more sir. Can I go on?" Ledger asked for permission.
"So sorry Ledger. Sure, you can," Richard motioned for him to speak. He was lost in work for a while.
Then he told him about the staff gossip.
"Really?" Richard sighed.
The workers must have noticed how he acted towards them. Adam was always bellowing at them. He had tried it too but he couldn't.
It wasn't in his nature to shout at people. He preferred correcting them. This was one of the challenges of adapting Adam's nature.
He had to follow through everything to the latter or someone would smell a thing. He would have to correct this just like the way he had started calling them their correct names.
He no longer mixed it up like before. That was a hurdle he was proud to have crossed. He could do this even though it proved difficult. He would do it.
"Thank you so much for telling me Ledger," he appreciated the chauffeur and made a mental note to get him something for always hinting him earlier.
It saved his face most times. The chauffeur was a good one to have.
Ledger told what his next course of action should be.
"I'll try that, thank you so much." Richard said once again.
"You're welcome sir," he bowed and was about to take his leave when Richard received a call from the hospital.
Richard reached for the phone on his desk. He picked it immediately hoping it was good news. He craved so desperately for good news. For a miracle that would wake Adam up.
He was tired of this life. He was trying to fit into the whole corporate world but something was missing. Richard longed for his brother to wake up to take his position as the CEO while he went about doing his business and living a private life like he always wanted.
This life wasn't cut out for him. He had to be extra careful. He had to watch his footsteps. He had to do things with caution. He couldn't even focus on his passion again because the office work was tiring.
He had to appoint someone to be in charge but it could never be like he was in charge. From time to time, he spoke to them over the phone giving excuses as to why he was away for a long time.
If this could be good news, he would release a yelp and leave immediately. He could not wait to get back to his normal life.
Richard motioned for him to sit down. The panicky voice on the phone tells him all is not well. All is far from well and his hopes were just dashed to the wall for the umpteenth time.
Ledger noticed the look of shock on Richard's face. He's nervous. What is happening? Richard can't speak yet, he's still listening to the person on the phone but he already knows something has happened. There must be something that made him look that way.
Richard gripped the edge of the table with his left hand.
The hospital staff told him to come to the hospital as soon as possible.
"What is really going on?" He asked in frustration but the nurse had hung up.
"Damn!" Richard cursed as he dropped his phone on the table. Hospitals and their precautions. The nurse should have told him what happened so he'd be prepared
Was all ok with his brother?
"What is it? Is everything ok?" Ledger burst into his introspection.
He had blurred him out of the room giving him more space to think.
"Not at all, Ledger" Richard sounded sad.
"It was the hospital and they demanded that I be there as soon as possible," he roved his hand through his head.
"What happened?" Ledger asked.
"I do not know. They only said I should get there soon." Richard sighed, getting to his feet.
If this was what he thought,he couldn't take it. How would he stomach the death of his brother whom he loved so much though they had their differences.
Richard muttered a silent prayer. He hoped his fears weren't true. His life would be upside down. He didn't know how to deal with grief for a second time.
He had completely broken down when their father had died. How would he take this after just two years of his father's death?.
"Go prepare the car, Ledger," Richard told him.
Ledger stood up immediately and walked out of the office. Richard reached for his suit on the hanger. He wore it and dashed out of the office not bothering to check his appearance.
The workers were surprised. Ledger had stormed out and Richard had done the same. They exchanged knowing looks and faced their work.
"Drive faster, Ledger. We need to hurry, it might be an emergency," Richard said.
He looked at his watch. It was almost thirty minutes since the nurse had called. He itched to dial the number again so he'd know what was going on but it was the hospital's line.
Richard dug his hands into the foam to control his nervousness as Ledger drove into the hospital.
Richard and the driver hurried in there immediately only to be met with the greatest shock of their lives -
"We are sorry to inform you that there's no Adam Smith admitted here," the nurse announced sadly.
Richard staggered back a bit. He turned to Ledger who looked at him with confusion in his eyes too.
"What you are saying is that you do not have my brother here, is that it?" Richard reconfirmed.
"Exactly," the nurse replied and extended a file as proof to show him.
Richard scoffed. He took the file from her to check for himself. This had to all be a joke. If his brother wasn't here then where was he?
"I was told he's in the ICU unit!" Richard roared in anger. He threw the file down on the floor in anger. This was all going down the wrong road. He hadn't envisioned this of all things.
Thoughts of Adam being kidnapped irked him. What if something bad happened to him?
"Has he even been in the hospital all these while?" Richard turned around in frustration. He was angry.
"Where is my brother!?" He yelled, turning around.
"Mr Smith, please control your temper, we have everything under control." The doctor tried calming him down.
Ledger had moved to his side to place his arm around his shoulder.
"Are you really telling me to calm down when you don't know where he is!?" He roared.
"For goodness sake, my brother could be out there in danger. He could be lost! He could be dying!" Anger was evident on the hard lines that lined his face.
His brows had knotted in folds and he was pale. Ledger held him by the shoulder firmly so he wouldn't do anything stupid. Richard sneered at the nurse.
"I will sue this hospital if you cannot provide me,Adam Smith!" He vowed.
Richard was a man of his words. His stomach roiled in anger at what they had just said and the nonchalant attitude with which they had lost his brother.
They had just called him a few minutes ago. So why were they uttering gibberish about him being missing?
Then the receptionist said she just started her shift some seconds ago, but there was no Adam Smith in their hospital, according to their records.
"Really? That's all you have to say about him?" Richard sneered.
He couldn't waste his time here. If the hospital couldn't provide his brother, he had to do something about it before it was too late. He didn't want to regret anything.
"Sir, please listen we are…" the nurse tried calming him down but he wasn't ready to listen.
"I do not care how you do it! I really do not care! All I care about right now is you finding him because I promise you! I will sue the whole of this hospital!" He raged.
Richard turned and stomped out of the hospital immediately. Ledger followed behind him.
Richard went back to the office and tried concentrating on work but he couldn't. He and Adam weren't the best of friends, but they were brothers. They had their differences and most of the time, they didn't agree or see face to face on some matters but that didn't mean he meant harm for his brother.
He had sent Ledger to make the necessary findings so they could look for him. He was waiting for news.
The secretary came in without knocking. She chose the wrong time to come in. She knew she told a lie, but the other workers were outside waiting for her. She couldn't disappoint them. She just hoped that he would play along, but she was shocked.
Richard was already in a bad mood, given what the hospital just told him.
"Get out of my office immediately!" He yelled but she didn't listen.
Why was the secretary here, trying to flirt with him? She even loosened a few buttons from her shirt.
He was very angry. In his anger, he fired her.
Richard walked her out of his office. He even followed her to the door and saw to it that the other workers outside the door were sacked.
