Chapter 91

Another perk of the Dogs of War, their loyalty to Samuel overrules any possible fear. And Samuel told them to listen to SS1 regardless so naturally there was no hesitation.

20 Dogs of War in heavier armour stepped forward and pulled out a heavy shield, with a similar design to roman shields.

They stood side by side, connecting the shields at the edges as they completely blocked off the ravine.

However it wasn't over there, no, the 20 Warriors behind them pulled out long red spears with serrated edges, and placed them between the heads of the defending warriors.

As for the remaining Dogs of War, they quickly scampered up to slightly higher ground and pulled out powerful longbows before drawing arrows to fire.

In the end, there were 20 Shield men, one set of reserves waiting at the back, 2 layers of spearmen so 40 total spear men, and 60 archers preparing to shoot.

Quickly the swarm came upon the front line of shields.

With a heavy crash, the shield men braced themselves and bore the impact.

However the swarm wasn't safe, many impaled themselves directly onto the spears that stuck out.

Easily on the first wave, 20 of these creatures were killed.

However Samuel noticed that they were even weaker than he thought. Samuel was confident that even twenty couldn't solo a regular Warrior!

But the number was incredible, more and more were still pouring out, endlessly!

''Fire!'' a captain shouted towards the archers, and immediately 60 arrows flew out, some impaling one caterpillar, some impaling 2, some even hitting 3 or 4!

''Reload! Fire at will!'' The Captains issued another order, as they drew arrows and rapidly began to fire.

Each Middle Rank 1 Arrow could easily wipe out 2 or three caterpillars with each shot.

SS1 had yet to take action, this was an ideal training time for the legion and he wouldn't always be the commander. So he let the captains take control.

The battle continued, blood flowed heavily and some Shield Dogs of War were finally worn out. But before they could die a replacement was pushed forward.

Therefore a prolonged battle wasn't an issue for the Dogs of War, and hell was it a prolonged war.

Samuel easily saw that over five hundred caterpillars were killed but they showed no sign of slowing down.

So the battle just continued!

However as another 30 minutes passed, and over 1,000 Caterpillars died, Samuel noticed something. The strength of the swarm was decreasing as the numbers increased!

They went from being comparable to 6 year old new warriors, to being compared to a mortal who barely got any Spiritual Energy!

Even a single step from a Dog of War could kill them. Naturally the killing speed sped up rapidly, soon 2,000 corpses of caterpillars were thrown to the side.

The IronBlood legion were sweating and panting right now, after all although the caterpillars are weak they still have some Spiritual Energy. But luckily Samuel saw that the number of caterpillars was finally coming to an end.

And after killing another 300 Caterpillars, they stopped coming.

The Middle Rank 1 Captains leapt forward to stand in front of the Shield Guards, gave out commands.

''Everyone has one hour to rest, after we will march forward.'' The Captains stood guard preventing an unexpected attack.

However Samuel walked over and picked up a corpse of a Caterpillar. With a small dagger he pierced the stomach of the creature and looked inside.

Strangely enough the interior of the caterpillar wasn't what you would expect. There were no important organs or even a brain! There were just some basic muscles and tissues.

Samuel was confident that even if the IronBlood Legion hadn't appeared, these creatures wouldn't have lasted another day.

However Samuel was also disappointed with the gains from this time. The flesh of the caterpillars has no beneficial qualities and there are no resources to be collected at all.

And the low quantity of Spiritual Energy meant that Samuel only got 1,200 Spiritual Crystals as a return from the Eternal battlefield.

Quickly an hour passed and the IronBlood legion was back in fighting shape. So in the same Shield Formation, they marched forward.

Surprisingly, along the way there was very little in the ravine. Occasionally you could see some small holes similar to the ones that the caterpillars previously crawled out of.

However when Samuel looked within only some shrivelled up bodies could be seen. But to Samuels surprise you could actually see some skeletons of beasts which weren't really weak!

But it was to be expected, if it was only a couple of warriors or one Middle Rank 1 Warrior they would definitely be swallowed up by the endless swarm.

All this made Samuel more and more curious about the origin of these caterpillars. And he would soon find out!

Twenty minutes of walking and Samuel felt some strange Spiritual Fluctuations appear around him. They felt agitated.

And soon Samuel found the origin, a large portal built within a stone arch. At the base of the portal small caterpillars were actually curled up! And you could see groups slowly walking out of the portal.

''Kill them.'' SS1 ordered lightly, as the archers pulled their bows out and fired rapidly killing the caterpillars.

Soon the IronBlood Legion stood unimpeded in front of the portal.

''Commander I volunteer to lead my squad through the portal!'' A captain from the IronBlood legion quickly volunteered to go through it.

''Go'' SS1 said with a positive nod. Even Samuel couldn't recognise this portal, but they definitely couldn't just leave.

So Samuel quickly flicked his eyesight to that of the volunteering captain, who immediately stepped into the portal.

Deep within the portal, on a large green plane, a large mediaeval city was built with ten metre tall walls.
