Chapter Thirteen Friends

A week passed and Roy was back on his farm. He had served no punishment from running off on the morning a week ago. To his parents, it was like if never happened. So he did his work in the day and practiced with his sword in the evenings.

Mary was feeling happy. She had no memory of what had happened a week ago. She still went to the library to help the sweet old ladies that couldn't do much heavy lifting and needed a lot of help to sort and organize the books. The old ladies still smiled at her and made their jokes which she didn't understand and shook off.

A week turned to a month and she was happier than ever. Her magic felt stronger and Eva stayed with her throughout the whole time. She took Eva back to the wood where she had found her all time ago and Eva went to her home in the trees.

The little fairies welcomed her by buzzing around her and dancing for her. They laughed and played and asked her what it was like to be so big until Eva came back and told them to stop bothering her but she told her 'it was okay.'

She no longer wanted to go the the cafe to meet anyone but instead wanted to explore the other parts of town. Mainly the market that opened every Saturday. From the morning to the evening.

she went there after lunch with Eva in her pocket and walked the stalls where she came across a boy. She didn't know him but he felt familiar. Like they had some sort of connection. They soon became fast friends.

"hi, what do you sell here?" Mary asked.

"mostly corn, potatoes and carrots, with some green leaf veggies, all grown locally on my families little farm." he told her proudly.

"wooow, that sounds so cool, I'm not sure what have been bringing me here lately but I think it may be because of you" she told him.

"When I first saw you it was like I had seen you before but I don't know where." he told her. They talked and laughed and exchanged their names. Then Mary left him to let him do his work. But it wasn't over between them as they made plans to meet up again.

Mary took Roy to the library to show him some of her favourite books and Roy took Mary to his farm to show her how they grow and harvest the vegetables. They enjoyed each others company.

Mary took on a part time job on Roy's family farm. To earn herself some money but mostly to hang out with Roy and to help them do the work faster with her magic.

"wow, for a girl you can really work fast." Roy joked with her.

"yeah faster than you, how's it feel being beaten by a girl." she joked back and they both laughed.

"maybe we could trade lives? You come work on the farm all day and I'll go to live in the town." Roy told her.

"you wouldn't like the town, too many people. I've seen how you get frustrated when the market is very busy." she replied.

"umm, your right, too many people made me nervous. Maybe because I have spent most of my life in the quietness of the farm. But I have met a lot of people. We hire a lot in the busy harvesting time but with you here I don't think we will need to hire any one else." they laughed.

"so whats your secret?" he asked.

"secret? What secret, I don't have any secret." she replied flustered.

"you must have. You must exercise regularly to be that hard working. It takes a lot of energy to pick the vegetables but you do it like my mom, like you have been doing it for years." he told her.

"ooooh right, that what you mean?" she replied now relaxed again. With Eva giggling away in her pocket.

"I guess its just..." she couldn't think of anything. "im a natural hard worker." she told him finally and he gave her a sly look as if he thought more of it. "okay, I believe you." he told her.

"I have a secret." he told her because he knew it was safe to do so. When he practiced with the sword of Kollam, it whispered in his ear. It gave him advice and told him who to trust and who he sould stay away from.

He put all his trust in his sword and when they talked about Mary, the sword told him that she could be trusted. She was a nice person with a kind heart and a giving nature. A person who loved to help with her gifts.

At first he didn't understand what that last part meant and he still didn't but he guessed it was something to do with her secret.

"what is it?" she asked curiously. "I can't tell. But I could show you." he looked around and saw his mom and dad were working in the field. "erm I cant yet but I will." he told her and she trusted him.

They met again in the evening. As it was getting dark. Mary and Eva had a long talk before they came and decided it was safe to tell him their secret. That he was a close friend and a person who could be trusted.

So the met on the field near a woodland. It was quiet and peaceful with a view of the surrounding farmlands. Just field after field after field until it met the sky line.

"is this place your secret? Because its beautiful." she told him and he laughed.

"No, its not but I do come here every night but that is to use my secret." he told them and pulled the sword of Kollam from his belt. "its this, my sword. You may not believe me but it has magical powers." he told her.

"its beautiful." she told him "and I believe you because my secret is a can use magic." she told him and plucked three little flowered from the ground and raised them up to her hands to pinch them between her fingers.

"noooo wayyyyyy" he replied, shocked "ooooh that's why you are so fast" he told her and they both burst out laughing. "oooh you are so amazing," he told her.

"I have one more secret too" she told him. "but you have to be careful, she is a little shy when it comes to meeting new people. She has been watching you but hasn't spoken to you yet." she told him.

"who is she. I would love to meet her" he told her. He expected a cat or a small animal or thought that she had a magical sword too but a little bright light emerged from her pocket.

"this is Eve, she is a wood fairy." Mary told her. As Eva flew to her ear.

"she tells me its a pleasure to meet you." she told him.

"oh wow, its a pleasure to meet you too Eva" he told her softly.

"she knows your sword, tells me its very old and powerful." Mary told her.

"you can speak to it yourself. It trusts you." he told her and held the hilt out to her. She took hold of it and it whispered into her ear.

"wow you can talk?" she asked it shocked.

They spent the rest of that evening talking and learning about each others magic. Roy told her how he came across the story of an old abandoned house house and how he took a trip there and found a key and found the sword.

Then Mary tom him and the sword how she came to meet Eva. When she was out in the woods at night, catching fireflies in jars and heard a tapping from the jar she was putting in her bag.

"I felt so embarrassed that I did that." she told Eva and Eve hugged her neck with her little arms.

"its okay. If you haven't we would never had met." she comforted her. They were all together now without any secrets and it felt good. They were closer than ever. They had become best friends.
