He lay in bed for what he knew could only be another five or ten minutes tops and thought that whatever drama his sister Stacy had brought on herself must have gotten sorted. At least he hoped so. Even though he didn’t personally know his sister’s daughter Addison, it would break his heart to hear she had been put in foster care.
Lula wouldn’t do that, would she?
He rolled toward the wall so he wouldn’t have to look at, and be tempted by, his smokes. Foster care, he thought, was such a joke. He had known way too many kids when he was on the streets who had been ground up and spit out by the system, who were running from the very program that was supposedly in place to help them but in actuality put them in the line of fire for abuse of all kinds. He shivered. Addison was only four.
