"Cultural competency, today eveyone of you will create a pamphlet about one cultural group and tell me all about them from the food specific to patients from that cultural group. Before we delve more into what I want from the class, can any of you share the experience you had with someone from a different culture!"
Deb Oh inwardly rolled her eyes, her instinct warned her that the lecture for that day was going downhill. Maybe it was because she was highly sensitive or probably prejudiced by her instructor's remark.
"Keep in mind that those from third world countries do things differently from those of us over here."
Deb Oh became livid with anger, at the righteous and overly superior tone of the class instructor.
"Are you freaking kidding me?! What age are we by the way? Third world country?! Prof. Mo, couldn't you have chosen a more 'culturally sensitive' way of phrasing people from another country or culture. You could have said 'like those of us from the first order country', that would have been more appropriate, in case you missed my sarcasm! What a moron!"
Deb Oh cussed at her instructor, saying her thought would have placed her in an awkward position, inciting the fury of all her classmates in a class made up of mostly non- minority, an opinion of a minority classmate would not have sat well with everyone in the class that day.
