Henry nodded, trying to keep his voice steady. "Yes, sir. She's been with me for over a year now. I saved her from a plantation just outside of Richmond."

The slave hunters exchanged skeptical glances, but one of them stepped forward to examine Sarah more closely. She flinched as he approached, her eyes wide with fear.

"You there," the hunter said, beckoning to one of his companions. "Take a look at her brand."

The other hunter stepped forward, grabbing Sarah's arm roughly and pulling up the sleeve of her blouse. Sure enough, there was a small mark burned into her skin, identifying her as belonging to a plantation just outside Richmond.

The hunters exchanged grim expressions. "Well, it looks like...we may have to take her back," one of them said with a sigh. "But what about this man? Do we let him go?"

The lead hunter considered this for a moment before finally lowering his gun. "We'll let you go, but don't try to follow us," he warned Henry. "And don't try to claim any reward for this girl. We'll be taking her straight to her master."

With that, the hunters loaded Sarah into their wagon and rode off into the early morning light, leaving Henry behind with a sinking feeling in his stomach. He had grown to care for Rocky, as he called her, and he couldn't bear the thought of her being returned to a life of slavery.
