4 The Greatest Mistake -3

The snowy wind whipped through my hair as I trudged my way to the cave opening. As I slowly got closer the eyes grew brighter. Their red glow piercing my soul. Whatever this thing was it had the power to hypnotize.

I was close to the mouth of the cave. I could practically feel the waves of aura permeating out of this thing. Its body was still shrouded in darkness. However I could see its figure. It was extremely malnourished from the way I can see its ribs poking out. It has a.. tail? What's with the horns? Whatever this thing was it wasn't human.

I finally crossed the threshold of the cave. At this point I could feel its hunger. Its aura kept getting more erratic each step I took closer. My heart was beating out of my chest. I think it knew that from the way it hunched down.

This was a mistake. I knew this operation needed a team. There was no way I could've done this alone and here I am about to die from this blunder. Why did I have to go alone? I let out a soft whimper as I got within 2 meters of it. As soon as the whimper escaped my throat it showed its teeth. It is smiling at me. That smile sends shivers down my spine.

I won't die! This isn't how I wanted to spend my afternoon! I began mustering up the willpower to fight back. I began pushing with all the force I had. I wasn't going to be a free meal to whatever the hell this thing was.

Its smile started to falter as I began to push back. It growled at me. "Seems your the one who I'm giving this power to." It said looking me up and down. How it knew my dialect I'm unsure but what I do know is that I have to get out, now! Its smile widened as it stood up.

"I've been here for too long mortal. You coming here is a blessing for me, and a curse for you. Once I give this to you I will die. Sweet bliss." It said. "Now. There are some things I should tell you. Firstly, you're going to be in a lot of pain mortal. More than you will ever go through in your measly existence. Next, you will be judged by every living creature. They will mock you, condemn you, kill you. The only benefit is that you will not be able to truly die, although, you will wish you did." It chuckled. "Now, speak."

My mind suddenly cleared but I still couldn't move. "Why?" That was the only thing that seemed to come out of my mouth at that moment.

He looked at me. "Usually mortals beg for their life, try to give me their riches, or even curse at me. Yet, you asked me a question. Curious indeed." He pondered my question for a few moments. "Balance. With one force there comes an equal force as an opposite." It said.

I was able to look down and did so. I didn't want to stare at that hideous creature for a moment longer. Its fangs were a startling shade of white, its tail swaying about, the red skin that was taut all across its body. It reminded me of the devils of the old religions. 'Why is this happening to me?' I thought to myself.

"Well it's your time young one. You mortal will get the greatest gift and worst curse. After today you will wish for more and wish for your death. You will have many trials and tribulations. But you will get through them. You seem like a good kid." It said with little remorse. It took its bony hands and grew his nails into claws. "This is going to hurt." It said biting its hand and puncturing my chest with its claws.

Pain exploded from my chest and I screamed. Its blood began flowing through me, so hot that it set the area where it had initially stuck its claw in on fire. I sank to my knees as he pulled his hand out of my chest. Blood sputtered out of my mouth and I slumped over. My vision blurred. My thoughts became incoherent. The world faded to black.
