The Bell

Asher walks out to the training field. He looks around for the person that Regard mentioned but found himself all alone. Asher thought maybe the the person was late. He decided to look over what he write about this world in his secret journal.

The world was very odd. They had an advance understanding of how magic functioned, but looking over the spatial magic, they had yet to discover things like relativity or gravity magic. Asher had a theory that gravity magic would be possible based on the principles of the withdraw and repulse spells, but so far there was no progress in that field.

As it stands, the only use of spatial magic is teleportation and storage magic. This is only one of numerous errors in technology that had appeared over his study. Certain fields of magic were fully developed to the point there was little to improve. However, the idea of chemistry, physics, and other sciences were so underdeveloped there was little to no information.

Magic was overly used in every field of life. It was like they know how the magic worked but not why. Asher guess this was why there seemed to be a discrepancy in knowledge and technology. Why they still used carriages yet had advance communication technology.

"If I could advance those fields, I could make a killing." Asher mutter to himself.

"What kind of book is that? Some kind of foreign language." Asher jumped out of is skin as he summoned his Singing Steel and swiped at the voice. As the blade cut through the air, it sung out leaving beautiful notes.

A figure in black jumped over his head. Before Asher could react he found a knife pressed against his throat. "What the?"

Asher arm was twisted behind his back. "You know it is rude to swing a sword at someone you just met."

"And sneaking up on someone and threaten is?" Asher turned his head to see his attacker. It was a petite woman with long black hair.

"I came all this way to train you, and you are swing weapons at me? You're not even that cute." The woman sighed.

"What? You attack me, and complain that I am not cute. Just who are you anyway?" Asher growled.

"I am Kiana. I am an assassin with the military and a knight lieutenant." She finally released Asher from her vice grip. The woman was only slightly taller than him.

Asher looked her over. "You're lying. There is no way a short stack like you is a knight let alone a lieutenant." The girl became mad and round house kicked Asher in the face sending him flying across the training field.

"I am the knight lieutenant directly under Regard, you brat, and the best assassin in the city guard. Show some respect," Kiana scoffed. "Honestly, you are hopeless. Go home. You won't make it through training."

Asher cough as he got up.

[Warning: you have lost 14 HP]

'What the hell is this bitch? A flipping truck.' Asher had to admit that he was amazed.

Asher eyes went wide. 'She is fourteen, but... I have better curves than her.' Asher did not say this out loud as he would definitely be killed. 'Poor girl, you are doomed to being a wall.'

The girl glared at him. "You were looking down on me weren't you." Asher looked worried. 'Don't tell me she can read minds.' The girl came charging at Asher. Asher flinched. The girl stop short and slammed her fist into the ground the ground shook as a pillar came out of the ground.

"Earth element." Asher whispered. The pillar had a small ledge that the girl stood on at the very top of the 3 meter tall pillar.

"You might be hopeless, but I promised Regard I would teach you a few things." Kiara boosted. She pulled a small bell out of her pouch and showed it to Asher before tying it to the ledge. "All you have to do is jump up and ring the bell 20 time in a row." She jumped down before waving as she left. "Good luck. Oh and you can't use magic."

Asher looked shocked. "There is no way that is possible." Asher moaned.

"If you don't think you can do it, then go home. It won't effect me." Kiara laughed.

Asher refused to give her the satisfaction. He summons a arrow from his inventory. He began by jumping as high as he could then jabbing the arrow into the pillar at the pec of his jump. For his first jump he made it to half way which was not bad considering he was only 1.2 meters tall as 10 year old.

Asher continued to jump each time getting a little higher until it became to dark to continue. His legs burned in agony. The highest he could make was 1.8 meters but no higher. "This is impossible." Asher moan exhausted on the ground.

Kiara and Regard watched Asher struggle from the task. "I thought I asked you to train him. Not torture the boy. There is no way he can pull this off on his first day." Regard spat.

"Hey. I am doing exactly what you asked me. It is not my fault if it is to hard on him." Kiara retorted.

"So you're plan was just to bully him until he quits. We both know that is not what I asked." Regard looked a Kiara with a disappointed gaze.

"So what if he quits? It just means that he would not be worth much." Kiara watched Asher with a discerning eye. 'The boy is clumsy with his moves. There is no way he would make a descent assassin.' She thought to herself.

Asher move his position catching the eye of Kiara. "What is he doing?" This stance he took was different from before. It was focused.

[Courageous Charge activated]

Asher launched upward at amazing speed. He jumped high up into the air and was able to ring the bell for the first time. Regard laughed. "How is that? He managed to pass your little test."

"He only hit it once. He has 19 times to go." Kiara looked in shock at the boy fell to the ground helplessly. "That was a martial art. How does he know a martial art."

Regard smirked. "I know right. He used that trick to crack my five layer shield."

"He crack your shield!!" Kiara can count on one hand the number of people who could claim that on one hand, and now this boy was one of them. Even if he was going easy on the boy, it should have been nearly impossible for him to do any damage to Regard's shield.

Asher tried to do it again but his legs gave out. Kiara appeared next to Asher to stop him from falling on his face. "There you go. Looks like you haven't master that martial art. Where did you even learn that?"

Asher looked away. "I don't know what you mean."

"Fine keep you're secrets." Kiara spat. "You're not bad kid. That martial art seems to focus on the strength of your legs. You don't have a full grasp on it. One shot and you're out of it." She smirk at her analysis.

She set Asher on on the ground. "The man focus for assassins are their legs. If you don't have strong leg you will not make a good assassin." She thought over Asher's skill. "You need to strengthen your legs, and improve your stamina if you are going to master it."

"Thank you?" Asher was a little confused. Early she was very rude, but now she was actual attentive. "I don't think I can move my legs."

"I bet." She got up and turned to Regard. "I am going to take him to his home. He shouldn't walk for now." She presented her back to Asher. "Get on I will take you home."

"Okay," Asher climbed aboard and let her carry him home on her back. As they walked through the darkening streets, Asher said, "You're pretty strong for someone so small."

"Hey. You know I can drop you right." Kiara snapped. "I have to be strong. I am the youngest lieutenant in the city guard. If I wasn't strong, the knight would make fun of me. Well more the they already do."

"They make fun of you." Asher thought they had to be stupid to try that. Her kick could easily decapitate someone.

"Yeah. They make fun of me for being so young, and being slightly short." Kiara turned her nose up.

'Yeah. Slightly short.' Asher thought.

"Hey, you just thought something rude didn't you?" Kiara shouted "I will have you know I am still growing."

'Don't all short people say that?' Asher thought. "So why did you join the city guard?"

Kiara calmed down. "That's a little personal don't you think?"

"Not really. I mean being an assassin for the city guard is not a normal career path." Asher stated.

"My you are blunt. I am an orphan so I don't have any family to speak of. And I have a reason I joined the city guard, and that is all I am saying on the matter." Kiara stated flatly. With all that said the two of them sat in silence.

They final arrived at Cynthia's shop. "You okay being dropped off here?" Kiara asked.

"Yeah, I am staying here." Asher said. 'It is not like I can tell her I live at the Duke's manor.'

Kiara dropped him on the ground. "You should be able to walk just don't push yourself. Your legs are still weak. Don't worry about coming back tomorrow."

"You're not going train me." Asher asked.

"I am, but you need a day to recover from today. Get some rest tonight, and take it easy tomorrow. We will begin real training the day after tomorrow." As she walked away, she thought to herself. 'That kid is weird. That sword he drew was definitely a magic item. Wonder where he got it.'

Asher nodded. It worked out beautifully as Cynthia would return tomorrow. This would give him time to ask her about dungeons.
