Death Note: L, Change the WorLd

L: Change the WorLd (stylized as L: change the WorLd) is a novel written by M. It is a spin-off story focusing on L after the events of the first two films in the Death Note live-action film series. Although the novel is marketed as an adaption of the live-action film of the same name, it has a number of major differences and explicitly exists in a separate continuity. One of the changes to the novel is that Near is no longer a Thai boy and is more similar to the manga character, and he is already training under L as his successor. The novel also reveals more information about L, his past, and his thoughts about Light Yagami and the case. In an alternative continuity in the Death Note setting, ace detective L's name has been written in a Death Note. He has twenty-three days to bring a terrorist group to justice, or they will use a deadly new virus to change the world—by killing off most of humanity.

L00-1 Reunion

When Maki opened her eyes, she was inside a hospital room. She lay in a bed sealed off from the world by an isolator tent.

"I'm alive?" She could only remember fragments of what had gone on inside the plane because of the high fever brought on by the virus. But there was one memory she could clearly recall. It was the image of L, who despite all his cuts and scrapes, had saved her just as he had promised.

"Everything is going to be all right, Maki." Three figures in hazmat suits were looking at her from the other side of the tent. Though they wore goggles, Maki recognized the smiling faces of Suruga and the Takahashis.

"Where is Ryuzaki?"

"He's gone, " Suruga answered. "He had one last job to do."

"Oh..."

Suruga stood by the window and looked out in the direction of Tokyo. "Ryuzaki's an idiot. Making up some story about a Death Note and fake L. Worrying about the world after he's gone."

And about me...

L had brought an unexpected proposition to Suruga, who was no longer employed by the FBI. He recalled L's last words:

"Mr. Suruga, while it is possible for Wammy's to provide for you financially for the remainder of your days, that isn't what you want, is it? Which is why I am offering you another job. Will you work with N of Wammy's House? Your field skills will be of great help to N."

"Who is N?"

"He is called Near, or Next. 'Near' as in the one soon to follow after L, and 'Next' as in the one to succeed L. He may be a touch more difficult to handle than I was..."

Afterward, L had taken out a Chupa Chups from his pocket and handed it to Suruga along with an official invitation.

"What was the last job Ryuzaki had to do?" Maki asked.

Suruga peered into Maki's eyes through his goggles. "To make certain that children like you can go on smiling in this world. By the way—" Suruga held a baseball up to the glass. "A present from Ryuzaki." It was autographed—a Tigers ball? Maki perked with excitement. But it was a ball signed by Ryuzaki:

"How are you, Maki? See you soon."

The instant she saw the message, Maki knew that she would never see Ryuzaki again. Ryuzaki, who dropped crumbs everywhere when he ate sweets while perched atop the sofa. Who bit his fingernails as he walked with rounded shoulders. Who risked his life to protect her. The Ryuzaki she adored.

"Your jokes are getting better, Ryuzaki."

Maki looked through the isolator and out the window at the twilight sky. She smiled as her eyes welled up with tears. She knew she had to live to change the world. The way her father and L had wanted, the way they had done so.
