Chapter 27

Inside the elevator, there were two buttons that were larger than the rest. One had the letter 'L' and was on the first row and the other had the letter 'G' on the last row.

Deciding to try the topmost floor, I pressed the 'L' button. The elevator was fast and reached the floor in seconds.

As the doors slid open, the first thing that caught my attention was a huge white couch and an equally huge TV.

Then the sole person in the room came in front of the elevator without being able to see me. It was a fairly tall young man with brown eyes and black hair.

Voranis: Jaime!?

He just nodded and waved at me.

Jaime: You don't have to stay invisible, nobody here wants to hurt you.

I revealed myself and he led us to some bar stools in front of a counter where we sat.

Jaime: So, mind telling me what were you doing at the docks?

Voranis: That's it? No 'How are you?' or 'Good to see you'?

Jaime: I'd like to say it's good to see you but that also depends on your answer.

He declared with a no nonsense attitude. I exhaled and got serious as well.

Voranis: I was working at the dock as always.

His eyes narrowed just a bit.

Jaime: Did you get hired as a bodyguard for the shipment?

Voranis: Bodyguard? No, I couldn't care less what happens to the shipment.

He crossed his arms.

Jaime: So what, they hired someone with superpowers just to carry stuff?

Voranis: Hey! Carrying stuff is not as easy as it sounds. And in case you didn't notice, I try to keep my powers a secret from most people.

Jaime: That's fair. One last question. Did you know what they were transporting?

I shrugged.

Voranis: I know it wasn't people but I couldn't tell you anymore since I got no idea.

Jaime looked towards the upper corner of the room and nodded.

Voranis: So, what now?

The elevator doors slid open and a drop dead gorgeous woman with tanned skin, long reddish hair and striking green eyes walked inside.

Starfire: Now you're free to go mr Voranis.

Before saying anything, I put my arm around Jaime's neck and whispered.

Voranis: Why is every female superhero so beautiful? Is that a requirement? Is the whole superhero industry prejudiced?

Jaime: You know, I wondered about that myself. You should see some of the supervillains as well.

Voranis: I'm not interested in supervillains.

I declared still whispering.

Seeing the stunning woman tilt her head a bit, I let Jaime go so as to not be even more awkward.

Voranis: If possible, I would like to meet with the woman that was with the blue guy at the dock.

Laughter echoed around the room but nobody here was laughing. Jaime got a bit annoyed.

Jaime: Cut it out BB!

A literal fly, transformed into a young man with sharp ears, green skin and dark green short hair.

BB: Hahahahaha blue guy!

The green guy pointed at Jaime and then poked him a couple of times.

Jaime: It's Blue Beetle!

He smacked away Beast Boy's hand and protested.

Voranis: Wait, that was you? Man you suck at close combat.

Jaime: Hey! I'm new to this and I'm still learning.

I laughed

Voranis: There's no shame in defeat if you learn from it.

Starfire came closer and put a hand on Jaime's shoulder.

Starfire: He's right, don't be discouraged.

She was much taller than Jaime and he had to literally look up to her.

Starfire: Now, about your request, Raven wanted to talk to you as well but right now, she's unavailable.

Voranis: I see...

"That's truly disappointing. Next time I guess."

Voranis: Thank you for your uh... hospitality.

I began walking towards the elevator but a voice halted my steps.

Starfire: Please wait a minute.

Voranis: Is there something wrong?

She walked close to me.

Starfire: I need to talk to you, can you follow me for a bit?

"A private talk without her team?"

I nodded and was led to a loom adjacent to the one we were.

She went and fiddled with a computer and then stepped aside.

Starfire: Is that you?

On the screen was an image of me fighting Toyman's robots besides Supergirl.

I didn't give an answer but my silence was one in and of itself.

Starfire: Let me ask you something else. Do you know Kara Zor-El?

I couldn't completely stop my reaction and my eyes widened a bit.

Seeing this, Starfire smiled. It was weird since all this time she was dead serious.

"What the heck is going on?"

Starfire: It's nothing, forget it. Do you want to stay and wait for Raven?

I hesitated.

"What's the play here? Why did she give me the option to wait now and not before?"

Voranis: Alright, if that's possible.

she clapped her hands.

Starfire: Great! Let's have a spar while you wait.

She said with sudden enthusiasm.

Voranis: E-excuse me?
