Chapter 3

After a few moments of silence, she looked at Dio and Dylan and broke the silence with a smile.

"You're back already, little Dio?"

She asked gently and shifted her gaze to Dio.

The strange name Dio got in this new life is Diomedes Inwood, which was written on the blanket they wrapped him in when they dropped him off, but everyone just calls him Dio.

"Yes, Ma, I got lucky with my daily work, and I made it home quickly."

Dio answered and tried his best to talk and look like a child.

"My little Dio, you always succeed. You're undoubtedly the most talented among all the children. Let's see what you brought me."

Dio reached into his pocket, took out the gold watch, and handed it to Ma Gann. She immediately lights up with joy at his items.

"Excellent work, my little one. Now, why don't you go inside for something hot to eat and a bath?"

She patted him on the shoulder.

"Yes, Ma. Thank you, Ma."

Dio has to put on a happy smile when she congratulates him on the work and hopes he never gets used to it.

Dio walks past her while smiling and enters the main door.

He turned around and saw Dylan's angry glare, which didn't scare him in the slightest.

After taking a shower, Dio heads downstairs to the cafeteria to eat a tasteless tomato soup served with hard biscuits.

As usual, Dio gives the rest to a child who didn't finish their work and doesn't have food for today because they didn't finish their task.

This gesture has become a habit for him and has earned the favor of many other kids.

However, since he lacks the patience to talk with them, Dio avoids socializing. At least they leave him alone, which he greatly appreciates.

Dio feels sorry for these kids, and if his plan works, he'll be able to help them.

There's not much to do after school and Ma Gann's task. Usually, Dio comes to the shelter late and goes straight to sleep.

But today, Dio must stay awake because he came home early to prepare for another robbery he planned to do in his own home.

Ma Gunn and the seniors will leave the shelter tonight and go to the border to get supplies for the next month.

Since the drugs are so valuable, she always sends a big part of her force there to keep an eye on things. This place is almost always empty.

She usually does business on different days of the month, but when Dio sees the seniors occupying themselves in the evening before, he knows it's time for her to do business.

The only thing Dio couldn't figure out was the exact time of the deal; he wasn't sure, but it seemed like only Ma Gunn knew.

So, it could happen anytime after dark, when everyone goes to sleep. That's why he needed to be alert and prepared.

All of the kids and teenagers were told to go to bed at nine o'clock at night.

A few minutes later, the lights were turned off in the rooms, and only the hallways were lit, which was good for him.

Just after ten minutes, when all the kids were sound asleep, Dio heard someone walking down the hall.

They were going away, and when the noise stopped, he got up and went to the window on the first floor. Dio saw the older people leave through the iron gates, enter a car, and drive away.

As he expected, they all left, except for two older boys who stayed to guard the gates. Inside the building, there was no one but sleeping children.

Dio moved as quietly as possible through the corridors. There were several rooms on this floor, and he didn't want to accidentally wake any of the children.

On the first floor, there was an ordinary area; on the second, bedrooms and a bathroom; and on the third, the room for the senior kids and my target, Ma Gunn's office.

The second floor wasn't as big as the first, so the walk wasn't too long. However, Dio went slowly until he reached the turn leading to the office.

He glanced at the corner and tried his best to avoid the surveillance camera. In this place, there wasn't a single proper bed, but there was a camera.

He knew about the camera because he came here every day for a year. Each time he returned home after "work", he came here and handed over the stolen goods to Ma.

It looked like the camera was securely attached to the wall, but it was hanging there too securely.

He knew this because the camera would shake when the wind got in through the window below it.

So, all Dio needed was a good stone and a throw, which he had been working on for the past month.

The throw turned out almost perfect; the stone hit the side of the camera, making it move without causing any damage, and now the camera was facing the wall.

All that was left for him to do was slip through the barely closed door. What he thought was a big mistake was that Ma Gann never locked it.

The office was shabby and old, with peeling wallpaper here and there.

The old woman always did her own cleaning because she didn't trust anyone else to do such an important job. The desk in the middle was full of papers.

There was only a wooden chair in front of the desk.

The wall opposite the entrance was filled with photographs of happy children kissing and hugging Ma.

There were no photographs on the left wall, but a painting portraying Ma's first children hung in the center.

The safe behind this painting was one of the first discoveries Dio made when he was alone in this room for the first time.

Lately, he has been left alone in the office more and more often when Ma Gann has urgent business to attend to.

He was always very careful when he checked things out. He never touched or moved anything to keep her from suspecting him.

It took a long time to figure out the combination for the safe, but inside it, he found disappointment.

Just birth certificates and legal papers, which is normal for places like this.

The owner of the place didn't really care much about bureaucratic matters, but she had to put something in the "fake" safe.
