Chapter 68

It wasn't Kara who slept through most of the day, it was Bruce.

"Master Wayne, I really think you should check your health," Alfred said as he walked into Bruce's room with coffee and milk.

Bruce sat up and sighed, "Don't eavesdrop on my conversations with Kara."

Alfred shrugged, "You two almost had an argument last night. Even if I didn't want to hear it, I still would have."

"But my suggestion for a check-up is sincere," Alfred added, smiling.

Bruce didn't press further, instead, he asked, "Where are they now?"

Although Bruce didn't mention names, Alfred knew he was asking about Kara and Jennifer. They were the only other guests in Wayne Manor the previous evening.

"They've already left," Alfred answered, adding, "and they took your Lamborghini."

Bruce didn't care much about the car but asked, "Did Jennifer leave anything behind?"

"She left you this," Alfred placed a small black bat-shaped ornament on the table beside Bruce.

"Does she already know who I am?" Alfred asked, holding up the bat.

"No," Bruce shook his head. Jennifer didn't know about his or Kara's other identities, but she did leave behind a symbol. The black bat represented Batman, and the white bat represented Oracle. Most people assumed Oracle and Batman were romantically involved since they had appeared together only once before. But to Bruce, this was just a token.

"There's also a letter," Alfred said, pulling out an envelope and handing it to Bruce.

Bruce raised an eyebrow, "Was this important enough to mention earlier?"

He opened the letter. It was from Jennifer.

"Bruce… Mr. Wayne, you are kind and not as reckless as people say. After all these years, I'm glad to see you are no longer consumed by grief and anger. Just be yourself.

"Kara once told me to pursue my own happiness and love, and I've done that. Now, I offer that advice to you.

"If you truly care about Miss Rachel, you must go after her.

"I've found my peace, and I hope you find yours too.

"Oh, and last night… not bad, but that's all."

"What does she mean by that?" Bruce asked Alfred, sensing that Alfred had already read the letter.

Alfred thought for a moment before replying, "In simple terms, Miss Jennifer had feelings for you, Master Bruce, but she's moved on. To put it bluntly, she broke up with you."

Bruce frowned, "Wasn't she in love with me for years? How could this happen?"

Jennifer had cared for him for so long and never looked at anyone else. Yet, when they finally got close, she left without hesitation, leaving only a black bat symbol behind.

"I don't understand," Bruce admitted, feeling a rare sense of confusion in the realm of emotions.

Alfred sighed, "Master Bruce, Miss Jennifer realized your heart belonged elsewhere, and that's why she left quietly. I think deep down, you know the reason."

Rachel.

Suddenly, Bruce understood.

Meanwhile, at Jennifer's apartment, Kara was fuming. She poked Jennifer's forehead in frustration, "How could you just let it go like that? After everything that happened last night?"

Jennifer looked at her with amusement, "It's because I experienced it that I can let go. Otherwise, I'd never be able to move on. You don't understand."

Kara gritted her teeth, feeling like she was fighting for justice that Jennifer didn't want.

"Fine," Kara sighed. "Since you have time to lecture me, why don't you help me sort through all this paperwork?"

Jennifer had worked hard for years, and after finally letting Bruce go, she turned her focus back to her job. She had changed into casual clothes and was sitting cross-legged in the middle of a pile of legal documents.

Most of them were related to the cases she would oversee as Gotham's new judge. She even found a business card Harvey Dent had given her the previous evening and called him to discuss her upcoming trials.

Harvey was now Gotham City's district attorney, and he would be the prosecutor in Jennifer's first trial, indicting a series of criminals. It would be their first time working together.

Jennifer and Harvey had hit it off during dinner, and their phone call quickly turned into a discussion about how to secure life sentences for the offenders. Since Gotham had no death penalty, life imprisonment was the most severe punishment they could push for.

Kara watched Jennifer in disbelief. "You're too righteous for this city," she said, shaking her head.

If their private conversation about sentencing ever got out, both Jennifer and Harvey could face serious consequences. They wouldn't just be demoted—they might even be forced to resign or face jail time themselves. But this was Gotham City, where the rules were always a little different.

In the end, Kara helped Jennifer prepare for the trial. They focused on gathering evidence against the Falcone family, even digging up dirt on the family's lawyer to use in court if necessary.

"But at the end of the day, witnesses are key. You need to make sure your witness doesn't backtrack in court," Kara warned. "That would cause serious problems."

Jennifer took careful notes and discussed Kara's concerns with Harvey over the phone. Later, Kara would hear from the Metropolis news that the trial had been intense. The Falcone family's star witness did, in fact, recant his testimony on the stand. But Jennifer and Harvey had anticipated the move and had backup plans ready. In the end, the head of the Falcone family was convicted.

However, they couldn't secure a life sentence. The best they managed was ten years in prison.

"Well, it's time for me to head back," Kara announced. She couldn't stay in Gotham forever—she had work to do in Metropolis, including catching up with Clark Kent, who had already started his college life.

Jennifer didn't seem bothered. She tossed Kara a set of keys.

"One of these is to my place, and the other is for my car," Jennifer explained casually.

Kara raised an eyebrow, confused.

Jennifer continued, "My car is in the shop, so I'll need you to move it when it's ready. Meanwhile, you can drive Wayne's car back to him and take mine when you return to Metropolis."

Kara stared at her friend. "You've really let go of Bruce, haven't you?"

Jennifer shrugged, "As you can see, I'm pretty busy."

The implication was clear: she had no time for love, especially not unrequited love.
