“Yeah.” The confusion tumbled free, her hunger for some resolution to her chaotic thoughts greater than her common sense. “But not a whim. A question. All these things you say to me…are you ever serious? Or does it always come back to trying to wind me up? Because I gotta tell you, sometimes it really works, and I don’t know if I’m coming or going around you.”

Ashley took another step forward, pinning her with his eyes as he moved. “What would you do if I were serious, Jenny? Would you let me go on? Or would you tell me to stop?”

Every inch he came closer drew more heat to the surface of her skin, drove more clarity from her thoughts. She knew the answer to this one, but it refused to come to her lips, leaving her throat dry and her ears burning as she tried to make the words obey her.
