Avoid Becoming a Starved Ghost

First, she had to find a shelter to shield her from the cold and any hazardous elements. Is that even possible? Where can she find a house in the middle of the forest?

Wait, she could see a log house a few meters away behind her. How lucky!

Sunny ran eagerly in its direction, and when she reached the log house, she was out of breath. From far away, the log house looked small, but it was bigger than she thought.

With a big sigh, she knocked on the door. "Hello? Anybody home? Is there someone inside? Yoohoo!"

There was no answer.

She repeated her knock. "Beautiful and nice people, where are you?!"

Again, no response.

"I know it's rude to disturb you in the middle of the night, but I'm not suspicious at all! I'm just a small child who got lost in the woods. My parents are surely worried about me. Please let me take a call!"

There's no harm in acting like a child since she really looked like one so, she might as well take advantage of it.

"My family is rich! They are going to reward you if you take me home!" she shouted desperately.

Nothing. And that's it. Her patience snapped. Sunny turned the doorknob on her tiptoes, thanks to her height. The log house was not locked to her relief.

She carefully entered inside, taking her time while being cautious. What welcomed her was a living room with nothing but old wood furniture. The light was coming from a crude looking stone that protrudes from the ceiling.

Is that electricity? Where's the switch?

The chairs and table are plainly made of wood. Over the floorboards, there is a dirty white rug.

Sunny walked slowly while turning her head left and right. When she was certain there was no one inside, she heaved a sigh of relief. Getting accused of trespassing was not something she would be thrilled to experience. But finding no one to help her was worse.

There are two doors in the hallway, one on the right and one on the left. The living room extended through the dining area, and it was only separated by a thin divider. When she spotted a rectangular thing that looked like a refrigerator, she almost tripped herself running for it.

She opened it again on her tiptoes and shouted with joy when she found food inside. Chocolate bars, cartons of milk, carbonated drinks, eggs, cookies, and biscuits---foods commonly found inside the fridge. There are also frozen foods like chicken nuggets, ham, bacon, hotdogs, etc.

When she checked the food pantry, there were canned goods, grains, noodles, pasta, and flour. There is even a collection of wine on the wine rack.

Good! Food resources are secured! Shelter secured!

Sunny was about to take a bite of the chocolate bar when she noticed the expiration date on the wrapper. That product expired two years ago.

What the hell? Her jaw almost dropped because of shock and disappointment.

With an ominous feeling, she checked the expiration date of all the food. Everything expired two years ago. Wine would be the only one that was safe to consume. Such a misfortune!

What's wrong with the owner of that log house? That person should check the goods inside on a monthly basis. It's not healthy to leave things like that. So irresponsible!

But the frozen foods inside the fridge didn't smell rotten at all. Even the wrappers of the snacks looked as good as new, like they were freshly bought from the grocery store just a while ago.

And the chocolate in her hand made her mouth water. The aroma smelled good too, and she swallowed automatically. She was really hungry. Now, choose. Die from starvation or suffer a severe stomachache. After so much contemplation, her desire won over her rationality.

Fine! If she died, she should die without getting hungry, even without dignity, and avoid becoming a starved ghost at all cost!
