“I can tell the difference. I’ll go in and take a count,” Nick said softly.
“Nicky, we’ve been through this. You can’t. There are guards here who have seen you,” Todd said.
“No one ever pays attention to slaves, and the few that might recognize me Captain Howard can keep away from the meeting.” Nick turned to Captain Howard. She nodded once.
“That might work, except Raleigh will recognize you, and if that happens, we’re done,” Todd said.
“How long do you need?” Captain Howard asked.
Nick shrugged. “I don’t know, ten…fifteen minutes. Just long enough to look around and do a head-count.”
Captain Howard looked at Todd. “Do you think you can get the chancellor here for a short time? The only way Raleigh would leave that meeting is if the chancellor ordered him out.”
“While he’s out, I go in,” Nick said and grinned. “That’s brilliant.”
“You’ll still need a disguise, but I think I can help with that,” Captain Howard continued.
