Memories Part II

I heard some voices in the distance. I tried to open my eyes, but I felt so tired. What had happened? Why didn't I hear my mum? Who were those people? I heard a phone ring, I tried to open my eyes again, and I managed to do it.

-Yes, sir. It's all done, but she's not in the lake, and she didn't come out. Don't worry! We have cleaned everything. We are about to leave, but we found someone else travelling with her. Yes, that's right .... We didn't know that and ..... Seems to be a relative of the lady .... What do we do? .... It's all right. Yes sir. - Said a tall man wearing sunglasses. He dressed in a black suit. He honestly didn't look trustworthy. On his neck, he had a tattoo of a snake slightly peeking out of his shirt. When I saw him walking towards me I closed my eyes, he touched my wrist and then my face, it took him a few seconds to let go of me.

Minutes later, I heard the engine of a car start up and drive away from the site. I slowly opened my eyes. I saw that the man was gone. I turned to look for my mother, but her seat was empty, her door was open and facing a cliff. I remembered what the man said about the lake. I was so scared and trembling with fear. I removed my seatbelt. When I was about to move, I felt a pain in my neck and head. I looked for my mobile phone, and I called an ambulance and sent a message with my location to my friend Ashley's mother. I opened the car door and got out carefully, and I walked along a cliff that overlooked the lake. The air smelled of oil and petrol, the car was in poor condition. It was battered and scraped on the driver's side. I didn't understand how it had happened.

I looked towards the lake and started shouting my mother's name. I couldn't see anything around me, I was all alone, so I couldn't help crying. In the distance, I heard the ambulance and the police. On arrival, the paramedics went straight over to check me out. They checked me and put on a neck brace. Fortunately, I had not suffered any damage. I explained what I remembered to the police, including the suspicious man. They told me they would look for my mother in the lake and the surroundings. I sat on the shore of the lake. I had to make an effort to visualize my mother's hair and face. Maybe she would come out and walk to me, she would hug me, and everything would be over, we would be like before, and this nightmare would end.

-Sasha, daughter, how are you? - Said my mum's friend, who was rushing towards me with Ashley. They hugged me and said that everything would be ok. I started to cry and told them everything that had happened.

The police searched everywhere with boats and divers but found nothing. When it was about to get dark, they sent us to rest. The police would continue searching. I didn't want to leave, so we spent that night in my friend's mother's van. She brought us hot coffee and blankets to cover us from the cold.

-Here, my girls. The agents are still looking. Everything will be fine.- She said as she took my hand and kissed my forehead.

-Thank you, Mrs Alice.- I said as I smiled at him or tried to, I looked out the window to see the lake, I soon fell asleep.

I woke up around 6 am when I heard the policemen running and giving orders. Something was going on. We got out of the van and went to the shore of the lake. A diver had in his hand a part of my mother's dress full of traces of blood, my tears were running down my cheeks, from that moment I knew that my mother was not coming home.

I looked at the lake, and I felt my friend and her mum hug me. Something shiny caught my attention. I approached the shore and saw my mother's ring on a stone in the water. Small waves hit the stone dragging the ring to the edge of the surface. It was about to fall to the bottom of the lake and disappear like my mother.

I ran and jumped into the lake. I heard my friend scream, but I swam as fast as I could and grabbed the ring. I returned to the shore and threw myself on the ground. Everyone approached me confused and afraid that I was hallucinating. I opened my hand and showed them what I had rescued while my tears came out uncontrollably. Ashley hugged me and said that she and his family would never leave me. I hugged them while I squeezed the only thing my mother had left.

For a few days, I lived at Ashley's house. But I decided it was time to move back home and face the inevitable. When I returned home, I quietly entered my house. I didn't turn on the lights and went straight to the kitchen for a glass of water. I heard noises in my mum's room. I got scared, so I called the police and hid in a cupboard at the side of the stairs. I looked silently through the cracks in the wardrobe. I saw the same man with the tattoo from the lake coming down, my skin crawled, and my legs trembled.

-Yes, sir. Don't worry, the house is alone. Everything is fine... Yes, according to the police report, Mrs Mia died, her body was not found in the lake. When checking her home, I noticed that she has pictures with a young woman, she looks like her... Mia could be his distant relative because she was not pregnant at the time... Yes, she is the same one that was with her that day... I know that lady survived, and she is living with a friend. The girl doesn't know anything about what happened. What do I do with her? .... Is fine, yes, it's better to leave her alone, anyway there is no point in eliminating her, it's not as if she was the daughter of Mrs Mia... My lord, I have to go, they called the police... Yes, I'll tell you anything. - The tattooed man looked at the window and saw the lights of the patrol car approaching. He walked towards the stairs.

I got a little scared when I saw him approaching so by mistake I threw something that was near me, he stopped and walked towards the wardrobe where I was, behind the openings of the door I could see how he looked with inexpressive eyes the darkness, voices were heard outside my house. He stopped and went up the stairs when I saw him walking away. I squatted down and hugged my knees. It was so dangerous. Suddenly the door opened, a light pointed at my face, the police had arrived.
