Chapter Twenty: Nothing happened

As he raced away from the danger he had left behind, he was unwary that it also lurked ahead. He had been too caught up with the act of clothing himself that as soon he was fully clothed and veiled by the curtains that were yet to be drawn, he thought he was in the clear. But Hazel was there. She had come as a contingency plan, in case Jake minced his words and added depth to the pit he had already dug for himself. Instead, while he was getting himself out, but Lenny was digging one for himself and for Elizabeth. The whole day had elapsed and on the surface the couple had reconciled. But a missile hovered over them, ready to drop and disintegrate the integrity of the still brittle marriage. During the course of the day, they had survived the residue of the passing of Leila. But with the setting of the sun came literal darkness. Metaphorical darkness was soon to follow.
