The Girl who had No Scent

DIANA POV

"If it's like a deadly imprint, he should've bitten me or hurt me when he had a chance.", I uttered softly as I fidget with the tube of my own blood. I drew my blood again to find out on my own what's so precious about it.

Calvin may be a vampire, deadly and viscious as what the wolves perceive of him, but he is still my friend who kept me safe and treated me like family all these years. I deeply sighed remembering all the good memories we've shared. Everything shattered as soon I knew he is a vampire.

May it seemed to be lies, I felt comfort in his silence when were together. Back in med school, I saw unfeigned affection in his gestures when we share a meal, when he drive me to school or when we have study evenings. Scott told me never to fall for any of it, because vampires are great deceivers.

I pipetted out my blood from the tube and released a drop on a glass slide. I slid it under the microscope and adjusted the lens to see a clear of view of my blood.

"No way…" I whisphered, as I magnify and inspect my blood cells. Then I got startled when someone tapped me on my shoulders.

"Doctor, patient 1108 wants to see you.", the nurse said.

"Is it urgent?", I said as I go back to the oculars.

"Dr. Murphy didn't tell, Doctor", she shrugged before she left.

I took my blood tube and hurriedly went to Dr. Murphy's room. I saw him sitting upright on his bed doing his crossword puzzle. Before entering, I asked for his chart and list of people who entered the room.

"I thought you wouldn't want to see me", he said with a clearer voice despite all his vital signs seemed to be bit low.

"How are you, Doctor?", I asked as I check on his broken leg, which seemed to be better as well.

"My neck hurts…", he glanced at the door before he continued. Cory was standing by as if he sensed something. "Maybe from lying down too much", massaging the back of his neck.

I noticed how cautious he seemed to be, unlike he usually is. He sipped a bit of water with his trembling hands.

"Are you alright?", I checked his temperature which is too low, his pulse is barely there. "Are you cold?", I asked.

"Would you like to check my crossword puzzle, if I did good?", he handed out his book of crossword puzzles, as big droplets of sweat come out of his forehead.

I took it from his hand and examined the book. I shifted my gaze at him and saw how restless he's becoming. When I check the crossword, all I see in the puzzle boxes is the word VAMPIRE, a message he cannot tell out loud.

I checked his neck for bites, and even assessed his pupils and teeth which were starting to change. His surgical site has fully healed, like it was never opened under the surgical knife.

Cory who was already in the room grunted warning me about Dr. Murphy. "He is turning, back away Luna", he said.

"Diana.. I don't think I feel well", Dr. Murphy said as his respirations started to slow down.

I took out my phone and informed Dr. Blackwell about the current situation of Dr. Murphy.

Then I remembered my blood tube. This is the perfect time where I can check my hypothesis. I asked Cory to close the curtains, and help me let Dr. Murphy drink my blood from the tube.

Cory got shocked with what I wanted to do. But he still held Dr. Murphy, as I shove my blood in his mouth. In a matter of minutes, his bloodshot eyes came back to normal and his fangs disappeared.

"I cannot sense him anymore", Cory said as he tried to sniff on Dr. Murphy. He also said Dr. Murphy is now less strong for a newborn vampire.

"I was right", I uttered as we stared at each other with how magical my blood is to vampires.

Remembering my glass slide that I left in the skills laboratory for interns, I went up there after having Dr. Blackwell inject sedatives to Dr. Murphy. He said, it would be a total chaos if a newborn vampire go running around in the hospital.

Entering the lab and checking the microscope, I couldn't find my glass slide. I searched all over, to no avail.

"It was not love at first sight", Calvin said as I heard a clicking sound. It seemed like he locked the door. "Do you have time for a story?", he asked.

I didn't looked back and just sat on a stool. Feeling my heart starting to pump quickly, I took a deep breath as I exhale slowly. "I'm all ears", I said.

"I was in a library, about to choose my dinner. Hunting in between large oak bookshelves, and choosing which delectable prey behind the books I would savour for the cold rainy afteroon. I sat on a chair and lurked fervently who would fit my taste, when my attention fixated to this girl who has no scent.", he started to narrate as I hear his footsteps go near.

"I sat before that teenage girl with sapphire eyes who was scribbling on a piece of paper, and still, I didn't get a whiff of her scent.", Calvin sat beside me, not too close for him to reach me. It felt like the calm before the storm.

"She was then fetched by her mother who was equally scentless. And that's when my attention grew", he added.

"Her protective mother soon found out I've been stalking her precious little girl. One day, she unexpectedly come up to me and offered a trade to satisfy my curiosity. She offered life, something I've been dreaming for so long. And in return, she wanted a true-blooded vampire for herself", Calvin sighed.

"Unfortunately, I am not someone she needs for I was only bitten way back 1854. She's after my maker who was an original vampire to the core." he said as he faced me.

"Your blood changed everything about me, Diana. The girl who had no scent. ", he said with his ever spellbinding hazel eyes.
