Chasing Butterflies in Another Life

[ Mature Content ] Kang Minnie was a stubborn anti-romanticist, an eyesore for the goddess of love who was coincidentally fulfilling her punishment as the temporary watcher of the gates to the afterlife the day Minnie unexpectedly died. And so to quench her thirst for entertainment, the bored goddess, Aphrodite, decided to play with Minnie’s soul and trick her into an agreement. One that contained the promise of another chance at life, which the desperate and naive soul of Minnie immediately accepted without any further questions. Due to this mistake, instead of the mundane Earth that Minnie was expecting to return to, she found herself waking up in a completely different world where magic exists and love was the ultimate source of everything, including life. Would the anti-romantic Minnie finally find a reason to open her heart and find love? Or would her stubbornness ruin everything including her one and only last chance of getting back to Earth through completing Aphrodite's quest? __ Please support and add to library if the story is to your liking! Sylvie

"To the right, to the left. Why do I feel like I'm not going anywhere?" Minnie sighed while taking her blindfold off forcefully.

"Grr!" she said and threw it away, finally letting go of the rage she has been holding back since earlier.

"Why is it so hard to fall asleep?!"

"I can help you with that," a thin voice suddenly whispered behind her ear, sending chills down her spine.

"Who's there?!" the startled Minnie said, focusing her alertness from behind.

"As expected, you're not her, are you?" the voice spoke again, seemingly traveling from her left ear to another.

"What do you mean?! I said, who are you?! Show yourself!" Minnie stood bravely while facing the direction of where she thought the voice came from. But just like before, there was nothing except for the wagon's walls.

"If you want to know who I am then listen to me. You're going to open a gate from your galaxy and then take me in with you, do you understand?!" the squeaky little voice chirped.

"I don't-"

"JUST!" the voice cut her off, "Put your hands together like you're uttering a prayer and then focus your energy on it while slowly moving them apart," she added which Minnie immediately followed along with.

"That's right! Keep going!" the once little voice said with a clearer resonance which made Minnie suspicious of what she was after of.

"On second thought, I think I need to know your name first before I proceed with this sorcery you're teaching me," Minnie paused before opening her eyes and completely ruining the procedure.

"Noooo!!! Why did you do that?!!"

"You heard me," Minnie said, raising an eyebrow at the invisible spirit.

"Tsk, fine! If I tell you my name you're going to open this gate for me, deal?!" the chirping voice seemed to fade again which made Minnie worry a little.

"Okay deal," Minnie said and sat down after realizing she has the upper hand in this situation.

"I'm Sylvie, your body's spirit guardian," the invisible creature said dismissively.

"And? What is this gate and galaxy that you're talking about? And how exactly can you help with my problem if I let you out, huh?"

"You're really worse than a nobody, huh?"

"Insulting me was not part of the deal, Sylvie."

"And so does your questions. Now let me out! I have stuff to do than getting stuck inside your pocket! Or at least my master's pocket when she was still alive here."

"Your master is the owner of this body?! That's great! Then you must know a lot of stuff about her!"

"Not gonna answer any more of your questions until I'm out of here," Sylvie said with finality.

"Of course," Minnie said with a pleased smile that made Sylvie feel uncomfortable, "You're going to answer them right here," Minnie thought to herself as she proceeded to open the portal to Sylvie's galaxy.

"Reee," Sylvie shivered and then sneezed as soon as she walked out of the portal straight to Minnie's embrace.

"Whoa! What is this?! You're just an animal stuffed toy?" Minnie astonishedly said while checking out Sylvie's silky little wings.

"I'm not just a toy, you damn money!" Sylvie rebelled while forcefully flapping her wings away from Minnie's hands.

"I'm your spirit animal! Show some respect!" the proud baby pegasus said with her chin up and arms crossed.

"..."

"Pfft!" Sylvie heard Minnie's stifled laugh which made the young pegasus look at her with a puzzled expression.

"You are one disrespectful monkey!" Sylvie cooed before Minnie could even notice.

And when she did, it was already too late as the spirit animal was already bawling her eyes out on the floor while slowly deviating from her levitation.

"I'm sorry! I just find it adorable how I'm talking to someone who looks exactly just like my favorite character from a cartoon series that I used to love so much as a kid!" Minnie honestly said as her heart sank further from seeing her spirit animal cry.

"I'm not making fun of you so don't cry, okay?"

"I miss my real owner! Mingzhie was not the best person out there but at least she showed me respect! Unlike this ugly monkey here who does not even know what a galaxy pocket is!" Sylvie cried even more.

"I'm really sorry, okay? I won't laugh at you again, I promise!" Minnie said while carrying Sylvie like a baby to calm her down.

"If you don't stop crying I will cry too," Minnie begged which apparently worked like magic as Sylvie just suddenly went into a few seconds of radio silence before saying, "Okay," and got up like nothing embarrassing just happened to the both of them.

"W-Well that was easy," Minnie awkwardly laughed at ease.

"I may not look like it but I have existed for more than twice your initial lifetime, Minnie," Sylvie said in all seriousness which gave Minnie a shiver down her spine.

"And I am a well-respected rare spirit animal that does not just serve anybody so you better get your acts right and treat me better!"

"Yes, master!" Minnie immediately complied.

"Don't call me master. You're supposed to be my owner."

"Right," Minnie nodded with determination before listening to what else Sylvie had to say.

"And also because of that, I will have no other choice but to serve you until my real master returns," Sylvie said, side-eyeing Minnie who has just realized how far Sylvie has gotten into her mind already.

"Your master told me there was a way for me to bring us both back into our worlds. Can you help me find out what it is?" Minnie shoots her shot. She knew they will arrive in this situation eventually so why not speed things up just a little bit?

"I can. But you're going to have to be willing to listen to me. Are you up for that challenge, detective Minnie?" Sylvie said while levitating to her eye's reach.

"Of course! I'll do everything you say!" Minnie said impulsively before realizing how much her emotions have already influenced her decision-making.

"Then great," Sylvie nodded in satisfaction.
